East Broad Top Railroad

  • In October 2005 the East Broad Top was holding their annual Fall Spectacular. This event was the first time in several years that more than one locomotive would be operational. So, I packed up my wife and three week old son and headed for Pennsylvania! This video is set up by location along the line, not in the order it was shot. Each morning started with a double headed coal train. This video brought back a lot of memories. I had forgotten what it was like to hear the whistles echo off the surrounding hills, and both locomotives passing the station at the same time. I can almost smell the place again! This video is longer than most of my other videos because I couldn't cut out a lot of things that add to the whole experience of the East Broad Top. Special thanks go to my wife, not only did she put up with me dragging her and our new born son train chasing but she also did a great job taking the pacing shots!

Did you know that the tracks to Saltillo are next to be restored for tourist service? They were last used in April 1956 before the tourist era and Kovalchick ownership. But a mile south of Rockhill was already cleared before EBT closed. The new owners have their work cut out for them, the tracks are mostly overgrown that way and crossings paved over. Pogue bridge is in good shape and can be restored. Rockhill to Saltillo is over 7 miles, it would be about a 15 mile round trip. The current ride to Colgate Grove is a 10 mile round trip. There are plans to build a new Saltillo station using some parts salvaged from the old station. The old one was too far gone to save.

Their also planning to go to Robertsdale, Woodvale, and they also said potentially beyond.

@@regularguy7266 Beyond? I thought the railroad ends past Robertsdale at coal mines? How far does it go? That would be a real long ride from Rockhill to beyond Robertsdale. Compared with the current 10 mile round trip north to Colgate Grove wye. Why didn't Nick or Joe Kovalchick ever want to run tourist trains the other way toward Saltillo and beyond? They just let trees grow in the tracks. I saw pictures of the overgrown tracks. That would be cool seeing steam trains running again over most of the line that was inactive since 1956. Why couldn't the EBT Foundation buy the track north of Aughwick bridge to Mt. Union? I never went to the EBT but I read a lot about it. I live in eastern PA and I'm closer to the WK&S and Reading and Northern, east of Fogelsville by a few miles.

@@robkrasinski6217 the line doesn't actually end at Robertsdale, it goes through Woodvale after Robertsdale and then to Alvin. Kovalchick did think about restoring tracks, but it was too late since it was during the early 2010s, which was when the EBT was having financial issues and closed down. Also, keep in mind while the original EBT mainline is about 33 miles long, the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec trackage, since they're also narrow gauge railroads but are in the western side of the country, is 40 to over 60 miles long. The thing is too, is that they use all of that trackage to the fullest extent.

Great video, looks like no 15 was doing most of the work, it's exciting to hear that no 16 then 14 will be coming back to life.

To me a steam locomotive isn’t just a thing. It’s a living and breathing animal.

Watching a You Tube video of a neglected portion of the EBT reminds me of the abandoned right of way of the defunct NYO&W in Lackawanna County

Very nice video, I was there that day with my father and can remember the pouring rain. The general manager who was close friends with my grandfather handed dad and I tickets to ride the night train, one of the best memories in my childhood. It spurred me on to become a volunteer there in 2008 and right up until the end in 2011. I remember watching 15 get put away in 2011 for the last time, after a conclusion of polar express the other crewmember (who was the engineer for the M3 for the event) and I sat back on the one coach platform of the parked train and ate pizza till the wee hours of the morning while the fireman cleaned the ashpan and helped put 15 away. Oh when will the good times return...

I mainly know EBT because of 14 when it pulled a photo frieght in the DVD "steam in the autumn". Even though 15 is my fav EBT engine I'm glad 14 will be returning to steam and that 16 will get a second chance at steam. And hopefully someday 15 will return too since it deserves a break after pulling all steam powered trains from the mid 2000s to 2011.

Most of his ride was from the "cut",and the mines in and arond Riddlesburg/Hopewell"to the "steps" above todays Saxton Firehall.
He rode the TNT car into the mines at age 11-14 (1914-17).
He and my grandmother was married at his 11 and her age of 14
They passed on in the late 80's...

Yes indeed , nice video of the E.B.T. I like the self propelled inter urban car . The train passes through lovely scenery which greatly adds to the value of this line. There seems to be a great love of steam-powered narrow gauge railways in Europe, especially the U.K. and Germany. I don’t know if they’re self supporting or their governments help. I enjoyed watching this, even though it’s been aired some years ago.

I heard that the line was "leased", but that he could not continue to keep the EBT line working. Unless it is re-started soon - there will be no more EBT. The town depended on it for income and growth. Do not know what happened to it.

It is. If you have a few million (I recall the remaining property south of Augwick Creek to Robertsdale is $8M), write Mr. Kolvalchick a check. While the land north of that point was sold to the 'association' that leased it, the EBT holds common carrier status and legal privileges associated it like eminent domain...

Union already? I know the family that owns the railroad was thinking of selling it but I didn't hear much more other then this information. can anyone help.
