South Street Seaport Museum New York has picked up The RMS Queen Mary Model located on the Promenade Deck , here are the details and Insights on What happened.
Part of the time I was in the Navy I was home ported in Long Beach. I remember seeing it painted gray, then was gone for about a month and when I got back it was painted in its regular colors. Opened up shortly after that and me an my new wife went aboard. At that time there was a model, this one only about six to maybe eight feet long that was on display in the Long Beach Library.
The average person, not necessarily a model builder, could sense that there could POSSIBLY be some reasons for concern in the placement of delicate models (such as those various ship models) on the outer Promenade Deck, not only dealing with the daily dosage of UV rays from sunlight, but the exposure to other things, such as the high humidity from the ocean air from the numerous open windows and doors, then dry conditions during early Summer months when it is dry and very warm, then cold temperatures during winter months, since there is no HVAC or other environmental control on that area of the deck. Wood and paper are the most common materials used on these models, which is highly susceptible to these conditions, causing them to warp, crack and disfigure. I am hoping that the Lusitania, Titanic and Normandie cut-away models from Father Roberto Pirrone have been taken care of. On a side note, in the video you make the comment that the "big Queen Mary and little Queen Mary met for the very first time" when this model was brought aboard the QM back in 2015. It was my understanding that this particular John Brown builder's model has been aboard the Queen Mary numerous times, including when the Queen Mary first opened and was on display until the ship closed at the end of 1992, when Disney left. RMS Foundation attempted to get the model back to the QM, but the South Street Seaport Museum was unwilling to do so, since there was still uncertainty if RMS would be successful in operating the QM.
Hello Blue Riband Productions, Thank You for sharing the details regarding the models on the Promenade deck, Including the history of the Queen Mary Model and South Street Seaport Museum, appreciate you sharing.
They could have had an equal quality builder’s model of QM built for less than half the $238,000 they would have paid out for “rent” on the one they damaged….just goes to show they probably never intended on paying anything on it anyway.
Fix both ships damn it this is a Disgrace take it out of our taxes fix the damn ship historic landmark icon and wartime veteran Damn Covid it doesn’t need to be a hotel no more strictly a museum belongs to the country what a shame
