Forged Blacksmith Knife 2.0

  • Full process of forging a classic blacksmith knife out of a roller bearing inner race.
    This steel is very hard to forge, even very hot. But it does get very hard after quench! As I've said at the end I tempered this knife for two cycles of 2hrs at 290°C to hopefully prevent cracks from forming after heavy use.
    Index of operation and materials:
    0:18 I don't know of a better way to open this up, cage looks to be pressed on
    0:50 Heat with my trusty old coke forge
    1:00 Split the ring with hot cut tool
    1:20 Open and distend the material into a strip
    1:50 Forge down th shoulders, these are very sharp and tend to fold instead of moving in (with my limited skills) A good option would be to grind them off at this point to have a square and straight piece of steel
    2:10 Start the taper forging
    2:38 Clean the tip end and bend it down to the edge to prevent too much distortion when forging bevels
    2:50 Forge bevels
    3:00 Make the scroll, round pliers makes this pretty easy
    3:30 Bend the handle into shape
    4:20 Decided to dust off my grinding jig since I haven't used it in so long, works well for flat and easy grind like this
    5:50 Also gridning edge and tip with 2x72 before heat treatment
    6:20 File a choil to start the sharpening well
    6:40 Hardening at 840 with oil quench (cold)
    7:10 Remove scales and buff with bench grinder so the temper color shows well
    7:40 Tempering at 290°C for 2hrs x2 cycles
    7:55 Sharpen with slack of the 2x72 belt grinder
    8:30 Strop the edge with leather and fine polishing compound
    I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

      This steel has very limited time window for forging. If you overheat it will crack right away. If you forge it too cold it will crack. Download "Heat Treater's Guide Companion" at play store. There you can look up the temperature charts for your steel, it should be 52100.

      I keep seeing it to from video to video, and no one seems to be commenting about your use of fire. Solid fuel forge is not a propane forge, and should not be used that way. You are wasting lots of fuel and heat by just laying a workpiece on top of your fire. Instead, pile up more fuel above table level to cover up your piece of steel. Burning coal/coke is far better "inslator" than those fire bricks.

    What a nice

  • @Il_Bruno
    @Il_Bruno 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a comment: higher tempering temperature doesn’t necessary increase the resilience of the blade; wrongly higher temperature increase the dimension of the steel grain increasing the weakness. A part this, the new one is nicer and better manufactured. Keep up!

    • @xj9779
      @xj9779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      See my coment above.... You guys have much to learn about Steel in general. Grain growing is above non magnetic point 768°C and if you do normalisation cycles it can be reversed.

    • @Il_Bruno
      @Il_Bruno 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      XJ9 please don’t be so conceited: it is related to the specific Bain curve for the specific steel.

    • @xj9779
      @xj9779 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Il_Bruno maybee ...there are much different Steel types. What i know if you do smithing with to much Temperature and no Deformation and forgot the normalisation cycles you end up with bigger grain structures. It is a easy process give the Material a heat above non magnetic and let it cool down around 600°C 3 to 5 Times and you are good to go. Then anealing in oven for a few hours or heat it up and let it slowly cool down in ash or perlite. After that hardening , anealing 2 or 3 times.

    • @Il_Bruno
      @Il_Bruno 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      XJ9 I don’t disagree with you. Just a question, you wrote annealing, after the quenching, I guess you meant tempering, otherwise the martensitic structure (hard) will be gone.

    • @xj9779
      @xj9779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Il_Bruno right its tempering after the quench 2 better 3cycles around one hour each .. sry english is not my first language and theres another method for fine grain if you harden the Blade two or three times then heat it up aggain and let it cool down slowly in perlite, grinding, the final hardenig and tempering cycles.
