  • Part two of the Integral Chef's knife build is about how I rough grind an integral knife. I'm able to get a nice bolster transition without expensive grinder attachments.

    Very good video. I wanted to add that the harbor freight file is a lifetime warranty since it's a hand tool so once it stops cutting I believe you can just exchange it for a new one.

    Thanks for this! I've learned to grind a safe edge on my files so they don't dig in to the blade, or whatever I'm filing. Personally I would rather spend the money on a good file; I've learned the hard way that expensive tools work better and last longer, but I do have some HF stuff in my shop . . . .

    • @Hathenbrucksteelworks

      I'm happy to help where I can. I'm with you on that. I learned from my dad that if you want tools that last, you're gonna pay for 'em. There are a lot of disposable HF tools that I buy because the life of them is usually pretty close to the more expensive stuff. I have a portaband that I got from HF for $90. I can buy almost 4 of them for the price of 1 Milwaukee, and the HF has worked really well for me. You just have to find the HF tools that are worth buying...many are not worth buying. hahaha

    some great tips as usual, really appreciate the way you explain them, uncomplicated is by far the best way and appreciated, can't wait to see the finished article, going to be great, and I have a tip for you that is maybe something you don't know, soak your blades in vinegar overnight to get rid of forge scale and save your belts some wear

    • @Hathenbrucksteelworks
      @Hathenbrucksteelworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always appreciated, Andy! I’m glad that I’m not screwing up the explanations. I have a tendency to do that sometimes. I used to soak my brut de forge knives in vinegar, but I always hated waiting for that extra step. I got a cheap sand blast cabinet, and it works really well, but I only use that for my brut de forge knives.

      hahaha. I appreciate that. I'm slowly becoming more like myself in these videos. It's a learning process for sure. I think when you lose the fear of screwing up, you become more confident in the things you do. I have that written down for a future video.

      @@Hathenbrucksteelworks alright i wont bother with it again. Yes i guess if you get used to it then that happens. When i gave my first classes, ive been quite stuff and un confy. After a while i just became my self. Hey if you want i can direct you to some very good bladesmiths in austria if you still decide to travel to your german family. Ive also got people there who tought me leather work and much more. Id have a guy for you to visit in slovenia.bhe worked for the dutch queen and the pope, he takes visitors to give classes, you pay a little rent and learn blacksmithing, not bladesmithing. He is one of the best in europe, might help you out with guards and pommels. His name is christoph whatever ( ill look it up, its a long time ago that i was there) in maribor slovenia

      Thank you! I tried some videos with music, but I just wanted to stick with the shop noises. Plus, people tend to complain about the type of music a lot 😂.

      I do sell my knives, yeah. I’m working on a website. Most of my selling is done via Instagram, at the moment.

    Hey, how long it takes you to grind this style of knife? Just wanna know because i feel it takes ages for me when im grinding my knifes. Quality content as always, thanks

    • @Hathenbrucksteelworks
      @Hathenbrucksteelworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for the comment. For the rough grinding, not too long, maybe about 5-10 minutes or so. Just on the blade itself, probably takes me 15-30 minutes, on average. It really depends on grind style and blade length, and if I want to grind to a higher grit than 120. For this particular knife, I'll pay attention to the time when I finish grind it. How long have you been making knives?
