The mine I worked at in the 70s was the same type of coal they mined at universal mine when we signaled to the haulage man our signals would spark regularly that’s what ignited the coal dust and methane at universal mine we were so close to a disaster I’m 62 now still think of the poor families that were left behind I’m a proud Welshman and proud former miner
Went to big pit yesterday never been so proud of my dad in my life he worked in Markham pit we had a fab day he got Alzheimer's now but he knew everything about it God bless them all. My wife's grancha has a stone with his name on in senghenyyd remembrance area what's showing on the picture he worked there. RIP grancha.
Played cricket against Senghenydd in the 1970’s and I asked a Senghenydd player where the mining disaster occurred and his reply was “ We are standing on it”
The cricket pitch is at the lower end of Senghenydd, on the border with Abertridwr, nearer the Windsor colliery. Senghenydd's Universal colliery was at the top end of the village, in the 1970's it was a sawmill.
Thank you for sharing this. The sacrifices made by mine workers should never be forgotten.
