- We leave Santarém through the Porta de São Tiago, to go down to Ribeira de Santarém around the cemetery. The church of Santa Iria possibly dates back to the 12th century, under the patronage of Santa Iria, a martyr from Nabantina whose body, according to legend, arrived here after her martyrdom. We cross the railway tracks and the Ponte de Alcorce to walk some 850 m along the road until we reach the willow tree that marks the turning to the left of the track.
The path, marked with signs for Santiago, advances along the flooded lands on the banks of the Tagus, where cereals, vines and maize abound. We continue for about 5.3 km until we reach the asphalt road that takes us to Vale de Figueira. We must be very attentive to the passage of vehicles, as it is 3.3 km of moderately uphill on a narrow road. In Vale de Figueira we can stop for a drink and visit the church of São Domingos de Gusmão.
On the way back to the Camino we follow a dirt track next to eucalyptus trees that leads to the plain of cultivated fields where there is practically no shade. We must make the most of the shade provided by the few trees along the way. Without passing through Pombalinho, we continue on to Azinhaga, the birthplace of José Saramago, who is honoured with a sculpture in the square. We can visit the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, probably built in the second half of the 17th century, in Mannerist and Baroque style. We continue towards the roundabout at the exit of the village, where the Monumento al Campino is located.
We have just over 6 km of road with no hard shoulder and some traffic to Golegã, so despite the accumulated fatigue we must be very attentive to the vehicles we come across.
The end of the stage in Golegã is the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, with a Manueline façade with an arch flanked by twisted columns.
