There's an official Top 50 marks of all time list going around and there's only 1 Ablett mark featured. Absolutely ridiculous!! Simply the most explosive, powerful, natural footballer there has ever been! Just incredible what this man could do!
I know Gary Ablett Junior is a champion, has won 2 Brownlow medals and played over 300 games but i cannot see how there can be any argument that he is better than his father. Senior is quicker, more powerful and can mark a lot better,as is evidenced by this video. I believe Senior could do anything Junior can but i don't think Junior can do everything Senior could.
Jnr was sublime in traffic...I know Snr played as a forward so he didn't get to showcase what he could do there but my gut says his son has him covered in that department...with tiny shifts of his body he froze the scene around him or he would step and weave into space...even in this, his last year, he never lost it...always had time...I grew up watching Snr and as a man watched Jnr...I'm really not sure who was better?
I don't think you can draw a comparison between the two, completely different players in completely different roles. Snr better mark and goal kicker, jnr unmatched in traffic, passing and handballs
We'd finished footy training down at East Malvern one night, either a tuesday or a thursday and the Vics were playing against WA over there. So we've all gathered round, showered and beered up,to watch the big game and there's this blond Victorian bloke no-one's ever heard of kicking goals on the run,on his left,on the boundary from 50 out and taking big marks and just running and kicking long goals.Basically, tearing the game up. We're all just looking at each other in amazement saying 'Who the fuck is this?!' Of Course,it was Gary Ablett making his Big V Debut having played just a handful of games. I guess, the rest is history,as they say.
@@chrispetritsch4959 Teddy Whitten had heard of him!! He was lucky to see him every week because he headed 3GL’s commentary team and Ted insisted that Ablett be picked - although Allan Jeans didn’t want him in the side (Jeans was the big V coach I guess as Hawthorn had won the flag year before in 83). The state games were on Tuesdays - i was just a kid in Grade 6 but your memory of Gary tearing them apart is spot on!!
6:08 One of the best and most difficult marks of all time. Running with the flight, he ends up standing on the guys back/shoulders through sheer athletic leap. He's then almost facing backwards when he marks the ball. Incredible
Fair Dinkum, some of these marks would have to be up there with the best ever taken. Miraculous.I just shake my head every time i watch a Gary Ablett snr highlights package. Awesome!
Ablett was a Freak. Brilliant skillful player. I was mad bombers fan but Ablett was just magic to watch - brought so much to the game. Fly high you good soldier! Thanks for the great memories and for giving us young lads (at the time) something to aspire to.
10:11 - 10:25 Ablett was sent to centre half-back in this game to mind Stewart Loewe, who was probably the best centre half-forward in the league at the time. Ablett gave him a lesson
Great memory you have there! I recall being at that game (was the pre-season cup, whatever it was called that year) and the word was that Malcolm was going to play him at HB for the season - which was quite astonishing to think about! Of course he mainly played wing/half-forward for the majority of the year and kicked 3 goals in the losing GF team to finish with 72 for the season. Remember fondly his absolutely dominant 150th game against West Coast in Perth… playing on the wing, he had around 28 or so kicks and kicked 5 goals. Just an absolute freak - best I’ve ever seen
A 4. Absalutlyabletlylovely above the rest wot can not hedo abbletly nothing normal great champ lucky to sea him because therewont be another abbletlylovely 1010gracios garry

Unbelievable!! Most naturally gifted player EVER!

Not many footballers have highlight packages of their highlight packages. Only cause he had so many highlights. GO GAZZA.
12:11 Beat two players.
6:30 natural leap.
The mark at 1:51 .... No sit just pure leap. If you pause it he is basically sitting on noone. Crazy leaping ability.
"That's a party trick not a mark!" How could you miss this one? th-cam.com/video/ofA4BXrJzhs/w-d-xo.html
Jacko must have hated ablett!
