This hymn was written by an English man (William Cowper - pronounced Cooper) who spent time with John Newton (who wrote one of the best known hymns - Amazing Grace) and he suffered for many years with a deep depression. The refrain is absolutely wonderful and describes an unwavering confidence thay many of us wish we had when life's ills trouble us. Praise be to God.
With love- all who have faith are commanded by Jesus to obey the Word. Maybe this song is awakening something in you by God's providence. The Word commands us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together (Heb. 10:25) and to submit to a plurality of human shepherds (Heb. 13:17). There are many commands that non-church-goers cannot obey, indeed, entire chapters and sections become meaningless if we aren't members of churches (1 Timothy 3, 1 Cor. chapters 5 and 12, Matthew 18:15-18; etc.). There are many false churches today, but I couldn't read your comment without pleading with you to find a true church and walk in true faith and obedience to Jesus (John 14:15; Matt. 7:21-27).
I got saved during my second University year in Port Elizabeth South Africa at a REACH-SA church. One of my pastors was teaching through the book of Ruth and Asked our congregation to sing this hymn every time before he delivered his sermon. I love the part “judge not the Lord by feeble sense “.
We sang this song at my church about a month ago. I wept so much, and I still cry almost every time I listen to it. I never make it past that second verse, "Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face." That so greatly touches me. I can trust in all things that my God will take me through to the end, I can trust in all things that no matter how bad the frowning providence, it is given by the smiling face of the God who loves me, and in whose arms I run for shelter.

Well, the song is in common meter (CM, 8686). You have literally thousands of other tunes to pick from. At least for the verses. You can also use common meter double (CMD, 86868686)
Mysterious as in God works in many ways, and nothing in life is guaranteed or straight forward as we already know. Its so sad babies cot death happens along with many other so sad happenings.

Well, the song is in common meter (CM, 8686). You have literally thousands of other tunes to pick from. At least for the verses. You can also use common meter double (CMD, 86868686)

Mysterious as in God works in many ways, and nothing in life is guaranteed or straight forward as we already know. Its so sad babies cot death happens along with many other so sad happenings.
