  • yaboytee Presents: Vibe Kayaks - Yellowfin 100 (2020) Overview / Review
    Description: If you're looking for more information about the Yellowfin 100, you're in the right place. I bought this package from a local Virginia Vibe dealer in July 2020. After a couple dozen trips, I feel that it's safe to say that I'm very happy with the boat, overall. With this clip, I walk around and show off some of the stock features, as well as detail a few basic modifications that I've performed to date. Be aware, this is the 2020 model, so any variations in design that existed in prior models, or future models, won't be seen here.
    Have questions about this boat that I may not have touched on specifically? Let me know with a comment if you'd like any feedback or have questions and I'll get back with you sooner than later.

    Good review. For the rails, you don't need to sand those down in anyway. The idea is that you unscrew one side, raise one side of the rail, and then slide on your device. When it is screwed back in then it is prevented from sliding off should it come loose.

    • @yaboytee

      So somebody that watched this video put a review on the Yellowfin 100 on the Vibe site and referenced my clip and comments...said he had a cup holder and couldn't angle it on, so on and so forth. A Vibe employee responded and put a link to a PDF that has instructions for using the rails. It says to unscrew the T-bolt until it's almost out of the accessory and insert it into the top of the rail at an angle, and then tighten down. I see what you're saying, and it makes logical sense, but Vibe themselves don't recommend unscrewing and raising the rail. My method here just saves me time. Every other major brand of fishing kayak that you can think of (e.g., Perception, Bonafide, etc.) has some form of indent or strategic valley on their hulls near the accessory rails to allow quicker installation and removal of T-bolt style accessories.
      I agree with you in that you don't need to sand it down, but I think my life is made easier by having done it.

    I have the same kayak and LOVE IT. with the rail mount… you can easily just loosen one of the screws and the track will lift up and you can slide your attachment right on the track… way easier than having to file down the rail for whatever reason lol

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure, appreciate the feedback and watching the clip. The rail mount seems to be the most debated topic here and I have had plenty of feedback about it. Had another comment about it regarding loosening the track screw but Vibe themselves don't recommend that method for installing accessories on the stock rails. I've been dragging butt on getting an update review clip up with more details on the rail so we'll see if that clarifies it a little more for folks wondering if this is the boat for them.

    Great review! those tracks actually load from the top, you need to angle your track bolt left or right and it slots right into the gear tracks without modification.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, you're not wrong for most mounts; pending the T-bolt length of course. I regret my verbiage in this clip leading folks to believe that they cannot top load accessories with the rails as stock, but my modification shown here is recommended simply because it's just so much quicker to attach and detach accessories, but again, they are top loading and will do as such with the right mount and bolt length.
      I've got a year-long ownership clip in the works that will address this in much more detail.

  • @coryhamilton8636
    @coryhamilton8636 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For anyone watching this. It is not totally obvious, but to insert accessories into the tracks you only need to loosen the T-screw and angle the accessory anywhere on the track. I was a bit confused at first as well since none of my other kayaks required this step. Once you are aware of this it is not an issue.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true to an extent. It depends on the accessory itself and the bolt length. Some cup holders require the bolt to be completely removed, for example.
      Also note the new Makana boats they're making have the little cutout dip area on either end of the track for easier installation.

  • @bkelley4443
    @bkelley4443 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You don't need to modify the rails at all. You just need to angle one side of the mount into the rail and the other side will drop in. It wasn't a mistake and its supposed to work that way.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The only way I could do that is if I removed the whole T bolt from the accessory, then angled it in there, then held the bolt by hand to screw the accessory back on. Maybe some brands have longer T bolts, but I've got multiple Scotty mounts and now one YakAttack mount, and none will give clearance for the required angle without fully removing it. And like I mentioned in the clip, there's other brands that have cutout spots in the boat plastic on either end of the rail so no fuss needed with angling the bolt from the top.
      So I agree, you don't need to modify them at all, but I wanted to not spend more time trying to install accessories when it should be a few second-long process from start to finish, which is now possible for me with the angles I cut in there.

    I'm 6'2" and all legs, how do you think the fit would be on this? I was advised to go with a 12' in a conventional kayak, but there seem to be much less options for that size for sit on tops.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 5'11" and all gut, but I think you would probably be fine unless you want ample wiggle room in the leg area...it will probably feel restricted if you plan to carry a bunch of gear, or at least that's my guess. There is the Yellowfin 120 which is a similar layout minus the front dry storage that could give you more leg room.
      I'm hearing Dicks Sporting Goods has the Yellowfins in stock at times, if you have one near you, they should let you sit in one of the ones on the floor to see if you've got enough room to feel comfortable.

  • @coryhamilton8636
    @coryhamilton8636 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Right now I have the Cubera 120 which I love. I am looking for a lighter sit on top for a second kayak. I was looking at the Yellowfin 100 over the 120 due to the weight of 51lbs. I am 5'10" 185lbs. I love how stable the Cubera is. I am worried the 100 might be too small for me.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For what it's worth, I'm 5'11" and 230lbs. I love my Yellowfin and still use it regularly. It's stable but I don't trust trying to stand in it and fish but that's more because I'm top heavy. It's a good choice unless you absolutely want to be able to stand...in which case, 120 might be more suitable but I have no experience with anything other than the 100 seen here.

    Nice review! Do you get any water going into the hatches? Maybe I missed it, but it doesn't look like they have a gasket around them.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for watching! So there's a gasket between the receiving plastic ring for the hatch lid itself and the hole cut into the boat. There is no gasket between the lid and the receiving ring. In other words, if water were to come into the sitting area and rise up over the lid, there's really nothing preventing it from dripping into the bag/hull area. In those cases where water might be able to do that, or in a heavy rain, I'd need to pull the scupper plugs so the water level wouldn't be able to get that high.

    So the website doesn’t state what the actual max capacity weight is for this kayak do you know? Also some kayaks feel a bit heavier than what they so called weigh does this one feel light? And can you fit a crate easily in the back?

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quick Google search says weight capacity is 375lbs. I wouldn't put more than 300 in it to be safe. These are listed at 57lbs and I'd say that's accurate. I lift it over my head to car top it on my late model Honda Pilot without any issues and I'm not very strong, but it's comfortable for me to lift. I run a standard sized crate (HDX brand from Home Depot) in the back tank well no sweat or issues at all.

    The rail mounts are top loading no need to modify. Should be able to mount in any position on the rail. At least with the yakattack rod holder I purchased.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With all of my Scotty mounts it was impossible to install them via top load without fully removing the T Bolt and then fiddling with the angle for a few moments. Was a major hassle, basically. I know not all T Bolts are created equal, so it could vary between brands as far as success with top loading.

    • @dbucha4
      @dbucha4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yaboytee I just got the same YakAttack camera mount you showed in the video. Were you able to get it to mount securely to the factory gear track? I was able to get it on by top loading it as they say. But I dont feel like its very secure. Doesn't seem like the t-bolt is in the track as well as it should. I can't turn the t so that it is under both sides of the rail as I assume it is supposed to secure.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dbucha4 Yeah, they go on secure enough and I've never had a mount fall off. If you notice any wobble once you tighten down the mount, like I have, I think it's more the attachment of the rail to the boat itself. Mine has some play on both rails even after tightening down the rail mount bolts that go into the plastic of the kayak. But the mounts have been solid.
      My comment about the top loading nature in this clip have been getting me flack so I'll be addressing all the overall questions I've got since posting this clip in a one year review clip that I plan to have shot and uploaded this month, hopefully.

    • @dbucha4
      @dbucha4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yaboytee mine doesn’t seem secure enough to trust with my camera. The t-bolt barely catches under the gear track rail when tight. It is, yes. It's a pain in the ass as is from the factory so I did make sure to include my modification suggestion. If I was in rapids with this boat I'd definitely pack light and pull the scuppers out (all of em) and hope being a little lower in the water and having the excess water go out the open scupper holes would keep me above the water and not in it often.

      @@yaboytee lol yeah I have gotten some choice feedback on videos as well so I never talk to people that way on here. Try not to anyway. Ironically the Cubera 120 is the best rated on Vibes site for fast water. I enjoy rivers in the North East here more than lakes and ponds. So when I say rapids I don't mean anything crazy. Just the class 1 and the rare class 2, you encounter in low water. My Canoe takes the cake in Big Water Lakes etc. Trying to find a sit on top that is both stable and handles rivers and low water has been a pain. The Crescent Lite Tackle seemed to solve that for me. You'll have a hell of a time installing a rudder that's meant to be there long term. Under paddle power it will generally go where you want it to but it does not track well at speed unless you're staying on top of it. If you paddle real well and then stop paddling, it will start veering off almost immediately.

      It's generally stable in the water, but tracking consistently is lacking; she'llspin around without much effort. Holds well in small chop but if the water is close to white caps, it's not fun. I can't stand and fish but smaller folks (under 180lbs and 5' 10" or less) are probably OK on calm water.

    • @yaboytee
      @yaboytee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If only I had several videos on my channel showing me fishing/paddling out of this boat... right?
      I'm not on Vibe's payroll my dude. I'm showing you the boat and it's features in this clip. The tracking/maneuvering for me my not be the same for you. You may not be the same size as me and may not be in the same water (i.e., moving current in a river versus still water in a lake, etc.) that I go in. Is there's overlap? Sure. So let me get you that info you need right here:
      Tracking: Pretty bad, but most 10' yaks can tend to do that. I don't go into current so can't comment, but I imagine it would suck.
      Manuvering: Not too bad, it tests your paddling skills or otherwise let's you know if you have none quickly. It's not a fast boat but it can be agile when needed.
      Stability: I can't stand and fish from this in open water and would say anybody wanting to do so will need a different boat. Somebody under 5'5" and 180lbs might be able to get a few casts in while standing but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're OK with flipping it.
      Thanks for watching?

    Every kayak review should include the reviewers height (foot peg placement and remaining locking points for foot pegs) and weight for reference, a little on water stability/paddling/tracking.
    Not a bad review but most of the info I can find on Vibe's site or looking at the kayak in store.

      @@samuelsherrill5933 I'm not sure how they're selling the package now, especially through retail stores, but my experience with buying from a local independent dealer included the paddle at no additional cost. My best guess without any direct knowledge other than a hunch is that the retail stores might not include the paddle and want folks to buy one in addition to the boat itself. No clue how they're contracted with the retail stores but I'm thinking there's a $$$ motivator involved somewhere given the supply/demand thing going on with kayaks recently.

My wife and I have 2 old Pelicans that I now exceed the weight capacity. i also have a Wilderness Ride 135, which I love, and she has a Moken 12.5. But they are 88 lbs, and 72 lbs and long. So we are looking for lighter, shorter, throw and go kayaks that can still handle 240-260 lbs people. The gear tracks on the Moken top load and I have never had an issue getting my Scotty mounts in them. I'll take a Scotty mount to Dick's with me and see if I can get it in the tracks on the vibe.

      @yaboytee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@truecrimson1 It's really unfortunate they don't include the paddle with the retail store package, in my opinion at least. That being said, the Journey paddle that came with my 'Fin isn't holding up too well after a year worth of use so it may be worthwhile for long term use to grab a separate paddle regardless.
      That's a smart move by bringing your mount with you to test fit...hopefully it works out. I'm planning to get a new review clip filmed and hosted and plan to discuss the mount tracks and inconsistency with top loading in more detail.

      I don't stand in this yak to fish, and haven't tried honestly. I'm 5'11" and 220lbs and I don't see myself trying to stand any time soon. With some form of stand up assist strap installed, and if I was like 30lbs lighter, I'd probably be able to. Somebody shorter/lighter than me could probably be just fine. Of course, a lot of manufacturing for kayaks is done in China with some assembly in the US, especially to keep the price point in a specific range. If you're looking into USA made boats, I'd recommend taking a peek at Native Watercraft...they have a Falcon 11 paddle kayak model that's not too unlike the Yellowfins...USA made and still under $1000. No experience with it myself, but had I known it existed before getting this Yellowfin, this clip could have been a review on that boat instead. Thanks for watching!
