    The biggest problem is that here in Europe you have 3 different motorcycle license (125ccm, 35kw and open). Back in the days you can reduce the power of any bike and many young choose the 600ccm supersportbikes, cause they handle perfect even with only 35kw. But few years ago, the rules changed and you can now only reduce the power of a motorcycle with has double the amount (70kw). With this rule changed, the sells of these 600ccm where gone. Thats why there are so many sportbikes with less than 70kw and even some, so called, A2-Varinte of bikes like the MT/FZ09.

    When I first heard of this R7, I had the same reaction as you. I remember the original and was annoyed that this one would be powered by a twin. As time passed, I understood the name was just to move units and that most people buying the bike wouldn’t remember or even know about the original.
    It’s a fine bike in its own right, but with the advent of the new ZX-4RR, any interest I had in an R7 as an intermediate track bike is gone. What can I say, I much prefer the sound of a four cylinder screamer.

      That's because the marketing department in the US is retarded.
      Everywhere else they were called MT from the get go, making the fz6 a completely different row of bike.
      And exactly as how the R125 and R3 aren't really super sports, so is the R7. So I don't understand how people can't pull the parallel here, especially since there was never an mt06.

    I have an R7 and agree that it was never meant to replace the R6...but so do Yamaha. Yamaha never marketed it as a the new R6, the community did. People saw the R7 release and started claiming Yamaha were trying to replace the R6. They weren't.
    Yamaha just needed a sport bike to help fill the void between the R3 and R1. That's literally all it is. They never claimed it was here to knock the R6 off it's podium.
    It's an aggressive, committed riding position not dissimilar to the R6 but slightly more forgiving. More tucked in and track oriented than the RS660 and the CBR650R but with a comparable power output. To Yamaha's credit, they gave the R7 some features that even the latest R6 never got. It's not a replacement for that bike. It's a lateral move by Yamaha into the supersport twin category so they can be more approachable and at least have something punchy and decent between their entry level sports bikes and their superbikes. People need to stop comparing the R7 and R6. They are different bikes for different purposes.

    I totally agree with your view on the R7. The cbr650r you also quickly mentioned in the list is something different though: Honda doesn't have a 600r that is quicker, but a 600rr. The double "r" at the end classifies supersport bikes, the single "r" more comfortable but still sporty sportbikes and no "r" the connected naked bike with the same engine. To more clearly separate the naked bikes they are also only called "CB" and not "CBR".
    By using that system in my opinion Honda created easy and clear categories to suit different needs and therefore riders while also having a bike for the European A2 license. (One that actually has four cylinders, which makes it unique in its class)

  • @Fee.1
    @Fee.1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have no major issue with it not being fast enough. Like if they'd used insanely aggressive gearing on a inline 4 that would be incredible imo. Lower top speed but twin like acceleration while keeping the revs. Is that feasible ?

    • @mfbfreak
      @mfbfreak 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I ride an old FZR600 with a larger rear sprocket. Top speed is limited by the rev limiter to 200km/h (haven't tried that out yet but acceleration in any gear is VERY fast - i have no doubt that it'll make it to 200 easily).
      As an additional bonus, it's easier to ride in 30km/h zones. It doesn't like spending time below 3000rpm and the bigger sprocket makes it so that at 30km/h it'll rev above that.
      But you can choose that yourself - just ask your maintenance shop to put on a sprocket X sizes larger.
      The manufacturer could choose to switch around gearbox ratios so you get a very short 1/2/3/4 for the legal speed range, and then gears with larger gaps betwen them for 5/6. But for track riders that might feel really weird, and cost a lot more than just putting on a different sprocket.

    not the first time sth like that happened... have a look at the old fj1100 "racer" -> fj1200 "sportstourer" -> fjr1300 "full on tourer". sometimes the customers request features that transform a model, sometimes it's government, sometimes just some kind of evolution. the naming however... 😅

      Most people are not that knowledgeable. I saw a mom looking for a bike at a dealership pushing a stroller and looking at the Ninja 650 and then saw the ZX-6R and for her brain 636cc is a smaller bike than a 650cc... I suggested she look at the Ninja 400 or the 650 instead of 134HP for a person new to bikes and said something like "bikes are 33.7x more fatal per mile than cars, you've got a young baby, you can get whatever you want but the ZX-6R is made for people like me that have nothing to lose", then when leaving I was smoking tires and drifting out the parking lot with my rotary car while she was walking out with her husband, thankfully I think she went home to do some more research.
      Fun fact over a year later I bought a ZX-6R (passed a few cars today going to work at 159 indicated but that's only 149 gps), it is an excellent bike but I would surely get rid of it and settle down if I was married or had someone to be responsible for.

Bear in mind though that manufacturers have to deal not only with costs going up, restrictions becoming stricter (at least for western markets), but also with the dying supersport trend/culture. 20 years ago the on/off or touring bikes were nowhere near the popularity they have today nor were they as mechanically and electronically advanced as they are today. So to build around them had practically NO meaning in terms of revenue and market share. The biking world is sadly changing, but I think we are just going through a phase like when Suzuki introduced the k5 1000cc engine or when the european manufacturers started improving their R&D and getting up there with the, until then, "Superior" JDMs.

    There has never been more gap between the 1000ccs superbikes and middle weights sportbikes. It's either stick below 100HP or go above and beyond 200HP. Only triumph and ducati have something in the 130-160HP range. That triumph 765 3 cylinder engine is a screamer. Don't know what's stopping yamaha from doing the same.

    It might be a new take on taking the R line and making it the MT. If the MT-10 was a de-tuned R1, then it would make sense that the R7 would be an up-tuned MT-07 in a new attempt to make the MT line match with the R line. We have to MT-03/R3 and the MT-10/R1, why not make the middle of them both the opposite, right?

The problem is R6 prices have skyrocketed after Yamaha discontinued the bikes and even finding one on the used marketplace seems to be hard even if you have the cash (where I live at least). Shame there will probably never be another R6 but one can hope.

    @Ellis01234567890 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You've completely missed the point of the R7. It's a beginner sport bike that is a step up from the R3. It's for new riders that aren't teenagers and want to start on something a little more than an R3 or Ninja 400. It's not meant to replace the R6. The R6 never needed a replacement because if there was demand for a bike like the R6 they would just keep making it. The R9 will be more of a replacement for the R6 but even that won't really be comparable.

    • @uhtred7860
      @uhtred7860 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The main reason the R6 was stopped was emissions, each year in Europe they demand tighter and tighter emissions. Its easier to get a twin cylinder engine to pass than an equal displacement 4 cylinder, plus they are cheaper to make. And with the 2030 deadline for all vehicle manufactures to stop making internal combustion powered vehicles approaching, they probably didn't want to spend the money developing a new engine to pass the ever tightening emissions. The R1 will probably go next, just like Suzuki stopped selling the GSX-R1000 in many markets.

    As a lifetime Yamaha Fan and Rider, it really bothers me how they so often do the "bold new graphics" and "parts bin" type of "new" bikes that really aren't new. The R7 is the greatest example of this. The CP2 engine has SO much potential locked up in it, the head/cam package on those bikes is extremely mild. Yamaha could've bumped it up to 90-100HP without a lot of effort, which would've transformed it.

    The 600 supersport class declined because as they got more and more race focused, not only did the price gap between the once affordable 600s and the 1000s narrow, but the all round ability was lost somewhat. The 600 class was once the biggest selling class, full of great bikes that were sporty and quick, but not full on track weapons like what they became. Sales slowed, then dropped right off, and now the 600 class is all but dead. For me the 600s peaked around 2000/2003.

    I don't see what the big deal or disappointment is about.
    There is no rule that states an R-series Yamaha sportbike has to have a 4-cylinder engine.
    The 2015 YZF-R3 showed everyone that, and by now we all know that the 3 in YZF-R3 refers to the displacement class of the bike.
    As for the 1999 YZF-R7, most people looking to buy a bike like the current YZF-R7 have never heard of the 1999 bike, and you sure did not see any in the showroom or out on the streets back in the day.
    Heck, many riders that did not closely follow racing back then were not aware of it.
    It was simply a race homologation special built just to meet the rules - practically speaking, nobody you knew owned or rode one.
    My 2 cents about there no longer being a YZF-R6 and it being replaced in the model range by the current YZF-R7:
    I have never ridden the current YZF-R7, although I did ride a 2015 FZ-07 for several years, the bike the current YZF-R7 is based upon.
    I also rode a 2001 YZF-R6 back in 2001 for one riding season.
    In my opinion, the FZ-07 was MUCH better at sport riding on the back roads I rode on.
    No contest, actually, because the power delivery makes so much more sense it just isn't funny.
    If you like open freeways, Interstates, or an actual road race track to ride on, I can see why you'd like revving a YZF-R6 and thinking that is cool.
    But for real back roads?
    No contest.
    A side benefit is with the Ti Akrapovic I had on the FZ-07, it sounded fantastic - way better than how my YZF-R6 sounded.

  • @Streisnd94
    @Streisnd94 11 หลายเดือนก่อน
