In the story, while sailing at nearly top speed on the North Atlantic in Mid-April, the ship strikes an Iceberg and sinks, killing most of its passengers,with the main loss of life being due to a tragic lack of lifeboats. After the Titanic disaster he gained popularity as the man who "predicted the Titanic disaster.", But he claimed only to have been raised by the sea and have knowledge of how the maritime safety laws were slowly becoming outdated as ocean liners became larger, and knew sooner or later that a disaster of Titanic's scale would happen. Just like W.T. Stead did in his short story "How the Mail Steamer Went Down in Mid Atlantic, by a Survivor."

I believe that it was based on him. It was him specifically mentioned in the Walter Lord book that was in the salon reading when the end came.
