  • In this video I convert an old sailboat into a skiff boat in 24 hrs time then take it on an incredible journey as I cross from Florida to the Bahamas solo boat. This video contains the entire build process along with the trip of crossing to the Bahamas by boat and then back to Florida on a small skiff boat.
For all your boat fiberglass , paint, resin needs be sure to visit our partner FGCI at one of their locations or by visiting them at www.FGCI.com

Things that you do that I dig. Repurposing boats cheaply and having a lot of fun with them. Having fun and not worrying about status, paint, trying to look cool. Adventures on the water. Learning things while I watch you do them. Your attitude and enthusiasm. Great video(s)! A pleasure to watch.

I want to see you build a party/sandbar skiff. A wide, flat deck area for sunning/dancing, someplace to store drinks that's accessible from waist-deep water, and an easy way on/off the boat, and capacity for at least 4 people, 18 - 20 feet with some sort of shade in the back. Maybe a skiff-toon?

Thanks Elle! I always love your ideas/ feedback! Ironically I recently had a 19-20 foot airboat hull offered to me ( super wide/ low sides ) and I have been back and forth. The hoarder … I mean connoisseur in me keeps racking my brain with ways to repurpose it and you very well might have the winning recipe! Cheers and thank you for the positivity / input!

I got hooked when the "Wild Skiff" video came out! Love that original waverunner idea. Did you pick up your spare motor or is it still hidden on a beach in the Bahamas??? Please remember to record when you are glossing, I'm counting on you for my fiberglassing education! I get to retire in a couple years and was thinking of getting two long skinny boats to build a pontoon boat out of and want to put twin motors on the corners with a throttle balance lever so with it in the middle the motors are equal but I could move it to the left or right to favor one motor to create differential thrust to improve maneuverability. Maybe you can build one to show me how! That Drysdale had me worried, don't do that again please.

I would love to take one of those trips - but I am on-call for work 24/7 365 and I am not a youngster anymore - I am currently setting up a workshop in my Garage to build me another boat - I miss the water really bad - I have lived in Dade Broward since I separated from the Navy in 67 - someday I might take a run up there to say hi - I used to hit the treasure beaches with a detector all the time in the 80's-90's
the more build you do the more ideas I get - how hard is it to get one of those boats registered or do you have the title when you start on them? I titled a 10-footer in the early 80's with no trouble, but I understand you can't do that with an old abandoned boat anymore -

My fantasy boat is a macgregor, with amenities and sail of course ..
But what I really want to do is a capable pontoon shanty that can do the Caribbean, or,a decent pocket cruiser under 20ft

Great adventures! thanks for sharing! One question: Do you go wide open throttle all the way to Bahamas?

Thank YOU for joining along for the ride! Glad you liked it! As far as my crossings I rarely go much above 1/4 to 1/2 throttle , it all depends on the conditions and boat. And fuel consumption. In the way there it was a bit tough and I really never went much over 10-12 mph , at one point we were just crawling along at a couple mph 🤦🏻‍♂️. On the way back I had a lot less gear and cruised around 16-20mph which was around that lower throttle of 1/4-1/3 throttle. :) the 2 strokes definitely drink a lot more then the newer 4 strokes! Thanks for the question! Cheers!

Amazing adventure. Wow. I will definitely not try this at home! Enjoyed the video! Did you have the backup motor with you on the return trip?

What material is it that youve bonded to the transom area to create the part? Awesome project and mission of course.

Hi Peter , are you saying a skeg? For tracking I’m guessing? I’m all ears! Cheers!

🌴 well Forrest , so here I am watching you pull off another crazy build ( in 24 hrs ) it sure would have been easier to be able to flip that hull to glass that keel extraction , thought for sure you would of let a bit of keel to help make it track better but it seemed to work out great , kinda wounding what happened from the last video you were looking to do an electric boat ? Canoe build ? Then this build took its place , now you left this build back in the Bahamas, was it for someone there ? You could of at least brushed some gelcoat on the bottom and transom so it didn’t look ugly 😉. You were zipping right along out there ! Dude that was freak’n scary , and just like you said being out in the middle of the ocean in a small boat with big azz roller coaster waves is humbling bro you’ve gotta have one nut bigger than the other two just to do it , I’ve been to Freeport a couple times a long time ago, beautiful place , but expensive since everything is brought in on cruse ships and planes , good thing that motor held out , just bought a 1973 Evinrude 9.5 hp for $250 bucks a couple days ago haven’t had a chance to check it out yet it sat for two years in a shed the guy I bought from said it ran when he put it away . ( the all say that ! ) well this was another adventure so glad you took us with . So what’s next my friend ? We see a lot of small boat creations , you definitely hav3 the skills and know how , have you ever thought about doing say 🤔 a big. electric motor solar catamaran ( buying a hurricane damaged cat or big boat live aboard fixer upper ? ) that would definitely give you alot of video content . 🤔

Hi Dave! Always a pleasure my friend! Cheers on your new motor! Fingers crossed for you that it works out well! And hahaha, they definitely all say that right?!
I’m always stoked to hear your feedback and questions on the builds. My timing / upload schedule ( or lack thereof ) is all very random and generally never in chronological or logical order. 🤣. I’m still plugging away on the electric boat and I will be uploading part two very soon. I promise it’s pretty crazy how the project has veered and transformed into a mini monster. I know you’ll like it!
As for the skiff I converted in a day, I did end up applying gel coat to the glasses areas and yes, I donated it to a fisher ( pre planned) over in Grand Bahama. The little red boat return was spur of the moment as I had a new home plan for it as well. Overall it did seem a little crazy making that return trip but I had a ton of safety things planned / with me/ and direct communication to both US and Bahamas sides. So although I was alone out there, I trusted and know the motor / boat well. I trust myself with my judgement to let the ocean tell me how and where to go, and in a worst case scenario I had communications to hail some friends to scoop me up. ( they also monitored my constant whereabouts via gps tracker).
      Cheers buddy!

I got lost in the process, did you goto bahamas on the boat you built and came back on another one. I do drift off but not out to sea. What did you use to navigate, dont see much instrumentation. Love the boating lifestyle.

And tomorrow, we are going to demonstrate that we actually can flutter kick their way to the bahamas using this pair of flippers scored from a yardsale for only 2 dollars!!
Haha, be safe and party on Garth.

I just lol. The best part of your comment is that ALL my close friends know I make my crossings with an emergency ditch bag at my side. It’s got the basics, strobe, mirror , handheld vhf w/ dsc , epirb, some water, an orange inflatable pool floaty raft and my fins!! They all know if all else fails I will swim my ass back to Florida. Haha. Cheers and Party on Wayne!
