Hi, some programs also put out calls for graduate students to teach in the summer and professors may be looking for research assistants. I've done both in addition to applying for summer funds. It's hard to get writing done especially if you teach during the school year, but I think it prepares you for the balancing act you'll do if you're a faculty member who teaches and researches.

what about funding during the summer? do you use savings from your stipend from the school year?
in my department you can apply for summer funding - i have been funded this way twice. but i've worked every summer just to save money up.
