The sense I get about living in Florida is that those who can experience the good life (with a boat, or living near the water or having friends that do) are the fortunate ones, and for the rest the lifestyle is pretty similar to everywhere else in the USA. Even though there is no income tax, living in Florida can be expensive with taxes on everything else, and I don't get the sense that wages are very good. I speak extensively with a friend who lives in Cape Coral. We talk about the pros and cons all the time. And he has a boat.

The wages are definitely subpar. Apparently Florida business owners haven't adjusted or re-evaluated the current Markets for wages considering the cost of living and housing/renting has risen dramatically. They are still paying like it was 5 yrs ago and desperately need to do a market analysis of what other cities are paying their workers who live in a costly area such as Boston, California etc...if they plan on attracting quality talented people.

My husband and I was born and raised here in Florida he has many of friends with boats that are always taking him on fishing trips, etc many of times he turns them down because that too gets old. You can experience anything you want in any state you live in it’s what you make of it. It’s the overhype of Florida that reels people in.

Born, raised, and still live in northern Palm Beach County. I've been to every single state in the continental US and have kicked around the idea of moving due to the crowds here. Grew up in fort myers. Left when I was 24. I still have a house there and go visit my parents a couple times a year. It has changed drasticly over the last couple decades. The cost of living will drop at some point, same thing happened in 2009 or so and when the bubble finally burst, it was super cheap. But thanks to Ian, the "small town beach" vibe and lifestyle is probably over. I miss it, but the volume of people who have moved to the area is testing the limits of roads and infrastructure. I hate to say it, but it seems destined for the same fate as Miami and Lauderdale. Too crowded for its own good.

@@jerrylawler2735 Well, I went to Lehigh senior high school for 9th and 10th grade and then went to The Academy, in Fort Myers which was a school that had a focus on arts and computer technology. It's gone now lol. Anyhow, it depends on what your looking for. I joined the military and did 20 years and retired, lived all over but upon retirement, I've been in Texas, in El Paso, going back to school for a degree. Is it better? In some ways maybe. But after living all over the world, it's the same story in every town, mass amounts of people are flocking to areas where it's cheaper and there is ample work so it's comparable to Ft. Myers at this point. I will say, I never thought I'd miss Fort Myers, but I do. There is just something about the vibe of southwest Florida that is unique. I'd say only you can decide. You sound younger than I, maybe get out there and try other places and if you don't like it, head back. As far as expenses go, I've lived a while and seen this type of inflation and price jump before. Things WILL get better, just have to get through the storm is all!!

I am a native Floridian who moved to Phuket Thailand 10 years ago to retire at 49. I have a paid off house 5 minutes from a world class surf beach. Brand new 3 bed 3 bath pool home for 300k. I have zero property taxes, and zero insurance costs. My house is solid concrete. Even if something did happen, 20k would fix any repairs. I eat delicious Thai food for 15 bucks a day. My health insurance is $1800 a year. No deductible, and the hospitals are world class. I had 10 stitches in my chin last month, that cost $65 dollars in the emergency room. Can barely see the scar now. I am not even going to get into the politics of Florida, but in Thailand they have such a live and let live attitude that I am afraid America has lost.

As a young guy out of college, I lived there 21 years ago for about a year; that area was nice but had many problems even then. Very transient, many came and went, I was in my 20s at the time, and there was hardly anyone my age in the neighborhoods near me at all; off Summerlin, the wealthy elites in south Fort Myers pretty much ruled the roost there, and it built up a lot more since then and priced many out; now, there is more expense, crime, and traffic than ever. I'm glad I left for Tampa Bay and that my instincts were correct when I did. I could give a shit about the heat. That's why I moved there; I liked it, but it was hot.

I am a lifelong Florida resident. It depends on your resources. If you live like the Average American you have to work a LOT to afford it. The pay in Florida pretty much sucks with the inflation. 5 years ago you could live in less populated areas and have a great life, now not so much. I have a paid for home, and no debts and it's getting tough with every last thing going up. My pay has not increased with the rate of inflation and I have a good job in Healthcare with high demand. But places would rather be short handed than pay a realistic salary. And they can afford it, since everyone is making lots of profit. He is right the rentals are very VERY expensive!! But the Homes are ridiculously high. I am currently working in Fort Myers and renting an apartment for this contract. At almost 2k a month, it's stupid high compared to the salary here. But there is nothing else available. Even crappy rentals are very high. I looked for weeks and I still check to compare. When my contract is up here (two years) I will probably be going back to my rural hometown to my Paid for home and do some staff travel. I did it before this contract, and wanted a break from it. That will pretty much be my only choice unless housing costs go down, or pay goes WAY up.

Hehe…I’m looking for MORE EASY access to city access…I live on the Gulf of Mexico . I’ve had the privilege of living on the Gulf or Pacific Ocean most of my lucky 🍀 charmed life. Now I’m old. Time to downsize & move to a safer place (weather wise). Our home will be done renovating by July. We want to move. Direct access to the Gulf has a benefits not lost on us. We had a boat & 2 wave runners, the kids are gone ( grown). We don’t have a clue what’s next. We have NO GATORS HERE, NO RACCOONS, NO GUILA MONSTERS here. Just birds that sing, occasionally a manatee or dolphin on our dock in the water…no crime either . Sounds good because it is (for someone). Cul de sac with…ready for it ? 52 dogs 🐕 being walked daily. Yup, they all get along too. Go figure. Wish I knew where to go…
