Andy C takes the photo this week. Played at Bentham a few times now, missed out this year, due to being booked to play elsewhere when the lads were playing at Bentham. Great course and one I have won at on one of our Senior away days, will return soon. Another great video, well done to you both.
How I reduce my handicap as a 62 yr old male: 14 months ago my handicap was a 8.7 - today it is a 1.3 - and still trending downward. Here is my advice to lower your handicap. #1. Come to grips that your club preferences in your younger days do not apply. Check your ego at the door. Find clubs that can shorten the course + reduce dispersion. (distance and accuracy) #2. Work on your wedge play (120 yds in) - MOST importantly : Find more forgiving wedges. - I switched to Edison wedges because they were more forgiving on distance lost on mishits. This means that if I slightly mishit my SW into a green it would still hit the green and not fall into a bunker of worse yet, water. Wedges most important value (remember they are called scoring clubs for a reason) is to put you into position to score. They have dramatically reduced my dispersion relative to distance to the pin - don't "just' try to hit the green. Try to hit the pin at least "pin high". #3. Learn and train yourself to hit "pin high" on mid and short iron approaches. #4. I practice at least 2hrs a week on putting alone. Practice putting to a target and on the intended line going to the hole. 3' - 6' - 9' - 12' - 15' - with the last thought on speed. It took about 4-5 months but the improvement is noticeable - especially if your approaches are pin high left or right. #5. At the top end of my bag I put in the longest most forgiving clubs with the smallest dispersion (left or right) Driver, 5 wood, 7 wood / hybrids (that I can flight) - then on my 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 -PW I want good distance that fills in the distance gaps that offer forgiveness. The of course my 50, 54, 58 Edison wedges that reduced my distance dispersion which is the biggest improvement on my reducing my handicap down to where it is currently. My last 4 rounds have been at par or below (71 ,69, 70, 72) - on one of the tougher courses I play in my area. (I usually play from 1 tee up from the "tips" so usually in the 6400yd to 6800yd range) PIN high is my mantra. Good luck on your journey.
Andy C - Just like the rest of us, Andy, when you find something that works you want to flog it until the wheels fall off ... and when the wheels fall off the search for the next "fix" begins. And so the great golfing cycle continues... 😉
Tracy b Glad you made it up to my home club Kirkby Lonsdale and also my 2nd most played course in Bentham. Proper hidden jewels in the North 👍🏻. Both with great clubhouse food!
I’ve had my 4 Iron out this weekend at a local parkland course that’s not long but tight fairways. Was surprised with some run it was playing 215-220yrds down some tight fairways. Helped me to an 88 so was very happy.
I use the Titleist U505 4i, i like it a lot so understand where you are coming from. Read some of the other comments and i have never doubted the integrity of your reviews or content
Course looks interesting and beautiful. I agree with your open discussion about long irons versus hybrid/woods. It does come down to suitability and we are thankfully all different. I play hybrid irons and the 4 iron is my favourite club in the bag after being the shot I needed to improve on, but now it's 200 yards straight and true 95% of the time. Andy C for me this week.
Tracie E. Andy, I got fitted a couple months ago for Mizuno Pro245 irons , 6 though gap, and Callaway Smoke Driver, 3W, 7W. I'm down to 12 clubs in the bag. Don't have a 5 iron. Not sure I need one. Don't miss not having one. So, a 4 iron would be in the same boat. Handicap has gone down from 12 to 9. Working on making that an 8 before the weather turns.
I've played Bentham many times over the years and it has changed hugely in the past decade. It's always been a good place to play and the lodges just make it better.
As with your 4 iron Andy, I found my best all round stick recently, a Cobra F9 7 wood been searching for it for a while! I play the F9 5 wood and this particular fairway wood just suits my eye and feel of the club. Shot 87 off a 26.6 handicap at the weekend on a par 70 course, without a driver……………. If it works for you, don’t change it, keep it ! Keep up the great content 👏🏽
Tracy b this time Andy. That's another dandy of a course sir! You are swinging those PXG's well my friend. I am trying to cure a pull left right now but I will get it figured out.
The photo is Andy d - beautiful shot. Enjoyed the video as always. The course looked beautiful. And love the sound your putter makes! Never noticed it before.l
I am also a big fan of fairway woods but have taken my 3 wood out of the back to replace with a Ping G430 5 wood (adjusted to 16.5 deg). I also have a 7 wood, BUT I have kept my Cobra King Utility 4 iron in the bag which I love for its accuracy and playability, and it good into the wind. It’s an easy iron to hit tbh.
Tracy b I love Bentham I’m hoping to be up there next week before I go back home to Spain Andy, it’s so well kept and the views are to die for!!! PS don’t tell too many people let’s keep it a secret!!!
Tracy C. I changed drivers last month from my 0211 to a different brand marketed for a senior like me that has a 11 degree loft, 1 inch shorter shaft and a more upright lie angle. I know I've lost a little bit of distance but I'm staying in the fairways more consistently. I've also watched some videos and have been working on my grip and have been hitting everything in the bag much straighter so I can't tell if it's the new driver or the grip that's helping me the most.😊
Another good vlog. My handicap has come down by 5 shots with my PXG, however, I love my hybrid/wood combination. No long irons for me. PXG appear to be pushing the big companies with excellent products with genuine improvements rather than the big sell of extra 5 yards in the hands of a professional.
I think for you and your swing, why wouldn’t you. I’m 67 so for me, my 6 iron is going 150. Not sure even with that PXG technology it would give me more than my hybrid. Have to say, the irons all stop on the greens well. Love the vlogs Andy 👍
I understand people when they see a player recommend a club made by a company that are sponsored by. Can you really believe what they say? I’m a person that normally buys into a company ethos and history as well as owning a product that very few other people actually own. I did this in 1988 when I bought my first Apple Mac and bought Apples computers ever since. About 5 years ago I read about PXG and immediately knew I wanted to buy their clubs. Luckily the clubs liked me as well. I have just traded in my Gen 3 Woods for new Black Ops woods and they are a work of art. I got to test out the Gen 7 irons whilst I was at the PXG shop in south London and they suited me to a tee. Now I have to find the money to exchange my Gen 4 irons for the Gen 7’s. I know most of the other companies may produce clubs that are just as good as PXG, but for me, they don’t look as cool or feel as good as PXG clubs. So, I actually take on board what Andy tells me and believe him. Whatever you do, smile when you play golf. JR
What am I working on? A major overhaul of my swing after 62 years based on the teachings on YT of Shawn Clements in Canada. As for clubs, over the past year have replaced my forged blade 3, 4 and 5 irons with 21 * 7W, 24* 9w and 27* 11w, and just added a 31* hybrid to replace my 6 iron. Changes made to add a little extra carry together with more spin, greater peak height and steeper descent angle to stop on greens.
Andy was looking at a combo set between xp (456) and x gen 7(789pwg). My concern is the big difference in lofts between the xp and x model. Did you deloft your 4 to settle with the rest of your clubs?
You can obviously look at adjusting the lofts to suit the combo set. In my case this 4 iron was not adjusted as it is in the bag as a club that covers a yardage I struggle with and not necessarily a step up from my 5 iron if that makes sense?
@@TheAverageGolfer Thanks for the response Andy busy getting a fitting booked in excited to try them (currently running p790). For me I just want the bit more forgiveness on my longer irons not worried about distance as already have a driving iron I can hit 220y. All the best love your channel
@TheAverageGolfer thanks for the info ..I only swing a 7 iron at about 75-77 mph so likely to be a regular shaft but still really looking forward to hitting these

Tracey e, but they're all very good quality in a beautiful setting. I've only recently decided to rest my 4 & 5 hybrids in favour of a MacGregor V-Max 4 iron.
