It thrills me to see this song still being sung after all these years since Mrs. Rhea Miller wrote it back in 1922, except then it was with her version of the music. My father, Rev. Ronald Kelly, Sr., pastored the Church of the Nazarene in Brooktondale, NY and she was a member of that church. It had no running water, just an outhouse!!! Her husband, Dr. H. V. Miller, was one of the great General Superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene. She played the piano for our wedding in 1955. Her version was more of a victorious sound. I sat on the piano bench with her while she told the story of why and how the song was written. Her father had been a hopeless drunk and used to even steal money out of his wife's purse so he could get another drink. His name was Martin Ross. Bertha, his wife, was a staunch Christian and walked to church in the mud, rain, snow or heat. She kept praying faithfully for him until it happened! God got a hold of her husband and he gave his life to Christ and was delivered from alcohol! He stood one night in a Sunday evening service and shared his testimony, telling how he would rather have Jesus than anything in the world, and named a few things that fit that theme. And that was where the song came from. Then later, as Bev Shea's Mom was praying for her son, she was certain he was off track for what God wanted him to do. She placed the words of that song on his piano. As he read the words God began stirring in his heart! He surrendered his life and will to God's will and God planted the tune in his heart that everyone knows today. His version having a totally different anointing because of how God moved in a Spirit of conviction, and his humble response to the song. His version of the tune was written in 1939. Just last year, The Brooktondale Church of the Nazarene Camp Board decided to make the song the theme song of the camp! And well they should have, since the song was born there. Where is Brooktondale? About 8 miles out of Ithaca, NY, a very beautiful, rural, peaceful setting, the site of many, many moves of God over the years. Come and see! Camp is always over the 4th of July week. Keep singing the song!!! Keep it new!!!
❤❤❤ OMG! BLESS YOUR HEART. GOD HAS TRULY BLESSED YOU WITH AN AMAZING VOICE. SO THANKFUL YOU ARE USING YOUR GIFT TO MINISTER TO OTHERS. I PRAY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THAT YOUR MINISTRY CONTINUES TO GROW. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
