- Setting up a new orchard here on the farm and I have come up with two ways to keep weeds and grass from growing in the orchard and garden areas.

Ilove people who gather what others throw out. My dad used to say you can make a living from what others discard if you can find a use for it.
A fork with many tines close together works much more efficiently. Many hardware and farm stores carry them. They originally were used for moving silage but now are used by landscapers and nurseries for moving mulch.
Our city's greenwaste site has me so spoiled … they use a front end loader to dump as much wood mulch into the bed of my truck as I want for free :) Consider sowing clover at the edge between your orchard and grass, and heavily flowering plants in addition to strawberries to up the pollinator and predatory insect count - this is not so important with just a single row of trees, but will be quite beneficial as your orchard gains depth. I have found that adding one pound of fresh grated ginger to a batch of cider during the boil adds a wonderful dimension to the final product - it doesn't mind growing under the trees, either :)

Harbor Freight has this truck bed unloader thing for about $40 that works like a charm! Not much help on the trailer... But would work fine for your truck. The wheel wells on my truck hold stuff back when I use it, but I bet it would totally empty yours. It's got a manual crank that drags a roll of what looks like trampoline fabric out. I've used it to unload damp sand without even breaking a sweat.

@@SSLFamilyDad Yep! It's with the truck towing accessories. I saw an Edible Acres video about it where he recommended it. I have a plastic shell bed liner so it slides easily. He was using it on an old truck with no kind of liner. I think if you have a spray in liner it probably wouldn't work very well...too much friction.

I've had good success with wood chips too, and I also head to free pile where the municipality leaves them free on a 'first come' basis. I use a plastic container and a hay fork to fill the container quickly than dump it into my trailer. Find it goes faster then having to throw the chips into the trailer directly.
We have that in my city, too. If I call ahead and make arrangements to go when he's there, the street department supervisor will happily load the truck with a machine.

I just got 3 loads delivered to my house they was happy to bring them to me I live in the country i watch for them to be working in my area within 10 minutes or so when they work around here they don't have anywhere close to dump so they are happy to bring them to me
My father used to plant nasturtiums throughout the orchard. They are good to keep bugs away. And are edible too. I like the idea for the strawberries. You have a good idea going.
🏴 Love your start of an orchard, my wife and I was discussing wood chip last night to control the weeds in an undeveloped area of my garden. Nice to be reassured its a good idea 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 have you thought about putting temporary boards around the edge of your trailer to double the height and then you can get double the amount of wood chip each trip 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Can't wait to see how you keep bugs off of the apple treed. I don't spray mine so it is hard to get nice fruit. With only 2 trees we make several bags of fruit that we freeze but it is a lot of work cutting around bad spots in the apples.

Hey brother, unless your wanting different kinds of trees, look into taking cuttings from those trees or air layering. You can fill your orchard in 1 year
I have thought about doing cuttings but still takes a lot longer than starting with 8 ft trees

Most Landfills will $ the Tree Services & Not the Home Owner... That's why i don't think it will be Hard to fine even a couple of Tree Services to dump at your place... The landfill will $ them about $60 a Ton to tree service the $60 adds up when they dump a couple of times each day, everyday.. Just call some of them and bet some will call you back !! You can layer in bush plants in the orchard. In between the starwberries and trees.
Great video, as always. You might want to plant comfrey, to help with nitrogen and other nutrients.

good stuff brother. we have a few fruit trees on the property, but I think I want to make an orchard on the place somewhere. down in the midlands of SC its a bit hot for apples, but the pears and plumbs do very well. I think I am going to try peach next year and plant a couple/ few trees and see if that works out. great idea with the wood chips and berries as ground cover, may give that a try as well. Keep up the good work and look forward to your Lord's day service each week.
Live in south georgia, apples , pears, peach, plum and fig trees, trying cherry trees for first time also have blueberries and throne less blackberries. Have ruby red grapefruit and 4 Orange trees, ya'll should be able to grow all theses in South Carolina. Love the Sunday video's after we get home from church.

Cheaper in the fall and might get some cheap if they look bad now but trees normally will bounce back really well.

I had a huge problem with weeds growing in my garden over the winter (I live in a mild climate). I started using my lawn mower to mulch my leaves in the fall and then cover the garden with the leaf mulch. This cut my weed problem by 95% and I get a layer of leaf compost every year.
Bag some grass for the other 5% and you'll be all set ? !!!

Maybe you could put side boards on your trailer and hitch it to your tractor to get chips that way you could load with the bucket

So far deer have never come up between the barn and the house because of the dogs and pigs and goats. I am hoping that will keep them away!

I have a question about putting the wood chips in your garden. We finally started planting yesterday, gonna plant more today. We live in SW Missouri and normally have our garden planted by now, but we keep getting frosts! Anyway, I suggested to my husband that we put wood chips between the rows like you do, but he was kind of hesitant and said what do you do next year when it's time to till it all up? Will the wood chips break down enough by then, to till up with the soil? I would love to do this, would save tons of time and headaches, but I'm just not sure if we need to change how we prepare it. I know this is an old video, so hopefully you see this soon.
So this can be an issue and it requires a little change in how you manage the garden space. I have some spaces I still till, while leaving the paths un-tilled with wood chips. I just add a new layer of wood chips to the paths each year. You can still run a small tiller down your garden rows or just pile fresh compost mix down those rows and plant in that leaving the wood chips in between. You don't want to till in too many wood chips as it can suck nitrogen out of the soil unless you add a lot of fresh compost each year

I usually use grass clippings around my vegetables, but the amount of bagging, even with a 5' walk behind commercial mower is getting old, very old, like me !
Can I Till the chips into my vegetable garden in the Fall or is that a bad idea because of acidity/alkalinity and can that be fixed with lime ?
Any thoughts on using 1/2'' pressure treated wood for the sides of your trailer, so you don't need a tarp ? Your trees look awesome and thumbs up !
Grass clippings work great, and yes you can till in the wood chips but you want to make sure you add lots of compost for nitrogen to help them break down

@@SSLFamilyDad Your truck is probably plenty heavy. But, when I put more weight in the back of my trailer, while using my SUV, it is difficult to control and brake. An elderly gentlemen at my church explained that to me.
I wanted to ask a question to I was told I couldn't use chips from some trees walnut was one I can't remember the other ones they said it would kill anything I put them around
I think that is only true for black walnut trees growing near other trees. I have never heard the wood or leaves have any effect on anything

You should put plywood sides on the trailer you are not getting close to the trailers weight limit since chips are not that dense about 400 to 800 pounds per yard.
I might do that actually have thought of it before, especially if they load it for me up there:)
SSLFamilyDad on mine I did 2’ sides for hauling compost and soil and made 2’ extension to put on top of that for mulch because it’s lighter. I also remove one extension when hand loading them so I don’t have to throw it so high then put it back in and top the trailer off. Good luck and thanks for the great videos!!!!!

We have dogs and cats around all the time which generally keeps them away. But sometimes you just lose some strawberries unless you build a fence around it
Do you not cut off your strawberry runners and replant them. I have heard some recommend cutting off the runners so they don't drain nutrients from the mother plant.
You can do that but I want that patch to keep expanding and remain dense

The easiest, if you have space, is to have tree trimmers bring truckloads of wood chips to you!
Fruit trees then a row of sunflowers then fruit trees and so on. Sunflowers attract bumblebees which are also great for tomatoes and the fruit trees.
That would be cool, I might do that next year as it is a bit late to plant the big sunflowers

Love the videos and don't want to be a Debbie downer but just watched your compost video about not knowing what chems are in your compost. Now I am all for not adding undue chemicals to what we are consuming, but don't you think that you may be getting way more unknown chemicals through the city wood chips than through the non-organinc goat feed that you have? Not saying that it is wrong ( I love free wood chips) but it just seem to contrast an earlier video.

My thought is this. These are tree branches so they are not sprayed with anything nor would they really contain any chemicals that might be sprayed at ground level so they should be just about free of any unwanted chemical sprays

It is all in the thickness of the wood chips. I have done it both ways with about the same result
You should spend the few extra dollars and get organic strawberries. in this day and age you don't know what you're planning and could be genetically modified crap. Just saying, but great video bud
I have no issue with a hybrid plant. These are non gmo as all of their plants are as far as I know. But I also have no issue with a gmo vegetable as long as I am not spraying it with harmful chemicals they are still good for you in my opinion
