    The best deaging I've seen was Michael Douglas as Hank Pym in the 70s in "Ant-Man." Thankfully, the FX artists had NO lack of imagery of Douglas at the desired age. But they did execute the recrafting so perfectly that it actually made me murmur, "Whoah!" (Also helpful: They KNEW they HAD to get it perfect and actively strived with no "good enough" in the equation.)

      Came to say exactly that, maybe it was me being a teen at the time, but seeing him as a young man, when I very much went into it expecting a 70 year old Michael Douglas, was such a trip at the time. Of course every prequel does it now, but it was so wild in it's first few uses.

    Not a film but a very deserved mention! In the TV show The Pretender, when we'd see "archived footage" from decades earlier, they did an amazing job of deaging Sidney, the creepy smoker (whose name I forget at the moment) nd others. They not only lacked the CGI tech for it when the program was in production but TV budgets generally would not allow for "Cadillac style" work anyway. But the practical FX/make-up folks did awesome on that show!

    My question is why are you slamming Jurassic Park III??? The rendering of the original third film is what makes it stand out of the entire franchise, and that spino was in fact the largest animatronic for film. The biggest shame was not being able to film the spinos demise because of how expensive the rendering shot would've been to get the raptors to attack the massive animal....

    The bomb in "Oppenheimer". Listen, I like practical effects as much as the next guy and Nolan is a genius yada yada, but in this particular instance he should have used GCI. I mean, James Cameron did it more than 30 years ago in T2 and it looked fabulous. The explision in Oppenheimer doesn't look credible at all, ridiculously small, not at all like a nuclear detonation

    • @ExarchGaming

      Holy crap! I have seen so many people lauding that scene in oppenheimer for it's use of practical effects, and i'm sitting there watching it thinking this looks *NOTHING* like a nuclear detonation. It was so laughably bad it looks like a standard explosion of a much much lower yield (because it was) not realizing that at the scale that nuclear weapons operate (especially in the kiloton range) just do not look like that. at all. It would have been 100x better to do it in CGI.

    Apocalypto, visually stunning film with quite a few practical effects, I'm not sure how much CGI, and one muppet. Near the end of the film the bad guys are attacked by a panther. Many of the establishing shots use a live animal, and I perfectly understand not bringing it and the actors together for the fight shots. But the puppet used when the panther is killed is just jarringly bad.

    X-men: Apocalypse is FAAAAARRRRRR from the worst movie in the set. That dubious honor still goes to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Even if we're only counting non-spin-off movies in the series, X3 is still way worse.
    Apocalypse has some redeeming moment in the movie like Magneto's family in Europe and his wrathful response to them getting harmed, or the underground cage fights with captive mutants or the mall scene.
    The Wolverine prequel and X3 don't have anything nearly as good.

    • @rorylynch7775
      @rorylynch7775 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Everyone knew Magneto's family was gonna die the second they showed up so their deaths are nowhere near as impactful as the film wants them to be. The scene is only good because of Fassbenders performance, not the scene itself. Those other movies you mentioned may be worse but Apocalypse still isn't a very good or entertaining film on its own.

    • @gregbasore2108
      @gregbasore2108 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rorylynch7775 Given how little he's given to work with in any movie after First Class, any great character moment from Fassbender is noteworthy.
      Also, agreed on Apocalypse, it's still a bad movie, just far from being the worst in the X-Men set, because of how many other stinkers there are.
      Sadly, one of the best of the whole bunch is barely talked about, because it got screwed over with delays due to the Marvel buyout of Fox and then the pandemic.
      New Mutants was a slam dunk that had a small cast, single location and served as a nice horror story with a "bottle episode" feel to it.
      It's a shame so much marketing love was given to lesser flicks in the series.
