I had a buckback rope I made out of clothesline. It did the job. I had an ambitious pulling mare and a balker. The balker didn't want to do much, and the puller would end up pulling the load by my hands. The buckback rope made them pull together. The ambitious mare could either pull the load with her mouth, or slow down a little. She chose the latter. That is a perfect first pull: no rodeos, nice and quiet and anticlimactic. Just for the young folks, always make absolutely sure the thing you are tying to can't move and can't break, and remember that 1600 lbs can break what you can't. Tie above the withers if you can, a horse can strain their neck badly if they pull back on something tied lower. If you tie higher, they can't get the pulling force to break things as easily either. Zach is doing this but he didn't mention it, always make sure you know where the ends of your lines are. I always sat on mine. Have one of those lines drag and get caught on something or get wrapped around that cart wheel, and you'll have a wreck you won't soon forget. I thoroughly second the warnings to be careful, I bear the scars of learning to work horses. Thankfully, I lived to tell the tale. Don't let it scare you from learning to use them, but don't be stupid. The biggest piece of advice I can give anyone for working with horses is you need to have phenomenal self control. If you get scared, they get scared. They pick up on your fear. So no matter how afraid you might be, you have to master yourself and stay calm. No matter how mad you get, they will pick up on it and get mad too, so master yourself and stay calm. It is all about being calm. Keep your voice quiet. Keep your movements slow. If you are calm, most of the time they will stay calm too, or if they get upset, they will calm down quickly. When you are riding, you can use your seat and your legs to help control the horse. When you are driving, all you have is the lines and your voice. You have to keep your voice calm. Always keep in mind that if a horse takes off, you can pull them into a circle and just keep spiraling in. The tighter the circle gets the harder it is to run. They will eventually either stop or fall. Zach is teaching you well. If you listen to him, you can make it look easy too. Zach, that was a textbook excellent first hitch. I don't know if I'd have done a three abreast the first day, but you made it work and did good with it. Its all in knowing the animal you are breaking. I had a colt I broke years ago that we were out on the road in traffic on his second day in harness, and he never put a foot wrong. He was a really good colt. I think I'd have to put their names on the top of the britching in spots or something, if I had that many matching black mules.
Yes ma’am I did agree with everything you said. And thank you for taking time to invest your experience into my channel in the comments. I’m sure that will help somebody somewhere. Thank you for the kind encouraging words. Thank you also for taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Excellent training video Zach, and clearly explained the buck back use and each step of your first day training. Special thank you to Marcy for excellent video footage and walking all over keeping the video centered.
Thank you sir and I’m glad you enjoyed it my friend. Good to hear from you! Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
Not sure they were being mean, they were just trying to sort it out. You're very patient with them and that, of coarse, puts you miles ahead in their training. Thank you, Marcy, for taking us along and letting us hang out with Zack and the new girls. - Clay
I’ve never had the chance to be around draft animals. I have learned so much watching this video, and really enjoyed it. Thank you, Sir. Carroll McGuire Marion, IL
You are very welcome, Miss Carroll. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment. Thank you for the kind words also! Take care of my friend and do come again, please
You are an excellent teacher Zach, you have a real good camera lady too. Very enjoyable to watch, You all done a great job. Thanks for sharing your experience with us and bringing us all along. Ken Smith.
You are most welcome, Mr. Smith. Thank you so much for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. Take care of my friend and do come again please
WOW!!!!! You are the man Zach! I totally wasn't expecting them to be so receptive on their first day of real training! You're a genius and I'm a big fan! Can't wait until the next video.
Thank you so much! Good breeding goes a long way. Both of these mules are pretty smart. I’m thankful for that! That makes my job a whole lot easier. Thank you for the kind words and thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care of my friend and do come again, please
Mr. Zach, This is Jimmy. I absolutely LOVE this video! You're a very patient man my friend and a great teacher! Miss Marcy done an excellent job too! I truly enjoyed this video! Thank you fir explaining and showing us the reasons why you do what you do on training! God bless you and your family my friend! Keep the videos coming!
Thank you, JIMMY! That means a whole lot to me my friend. You are such an encourager and I appreciate it so much. I’m glad you all are enjoying the video. That makes it work doing. Thank you again and thank you for taking time to watch and comment as always. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
I sure will. And thank you very much for the super kind words. Thank you also for taking time to watch and comment. It means a lot to me. Take care of my friend and do come again, please
Zach i love it when you said it my get a little western i have broke a few horses to ride but i was 15 now I'm 56 body want let me no longer but thanks again. Hey my brother said he watch you ❤🙏👍😀
@@terryreynolds1366I can understand that. I use to break a lot of young colts to ride when I was a teenager. Hitting the ground sucks a little worse now lol. Thanks for the kind words and for taking time to watch and comment my friend. Take care and do come again, please
First, I would like to personally thank Marcie for stomping through that wire grass so we could watch a seasoned mule skinner do his thing. Thank you very much Marcie! I've been waiting for this video. I was really surprised at how fast you proceeded with the training. You just strapped them in and away you went. I realized that Alice that made this possible along with the back strap. I was astonished at just how fast they took to it. Another thing that surprised me was just how fast June fell right in and started pulling, I thought she would be a hand full however, as you said, the wire on the bit helped her make up her mind. You said a while back that June would turn out to be a very good mule. May was more relaxed but she didn't seem to get the concept as fast as June, she thought she was on a leisure walk. For a future video, I'd like to see the mules after a days training, being unharnessed and put out for the night if you feel so inclined. I'd like to see how they act after their work is done and can relax. Again, I was really impressed watching this, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hated to see the video end. Thank you both for sharing and your hard work. I look forward to seeing them progress and seeing you get them side by side for the first time. May God bless you and your family!
Thank you so much and I’m so glad you enjoyed it and could learn something from it. That makes it worth doing. I will try to get a video sometime of their turnout after work. Thank you for the idea! Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate your dedication to my channel! Take care my friend and do come again, please
Well thank you for sharing all these pretty important advices. I'm not just watching and hearing, I'm imagining how I could try to put your knowledge into my work with my drafthorses. I felt pleased and really enjoying to have been among your work to make May & June getting big girls !! Thanks Marcy for videoing which help us to see all what's need to be seen. You're the in shadow but we like knowing you're here too. You both take care. Best regards from France !
Thank you very much!! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I will tell Marcy! I’m glad you enjoyed it. That makes it worth doing. Take care and do come again, please
Looking good Zach. That went a lot smoother than I thought it would. That rigging setup makes all the difference looks like. God bless and keep you safe.
Thank and yes, I think so too… Thank you very kindly for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate it. Take care my friend and do come again, please
I wish that I had known about the strap to help with keeping May and June back. When I broke my pair of mules I didn’t have one that I could pony with. Instead I snubbed them in behind my trailer and they were pulling a wagon with brakes on it. It worked pretty good. But having the buck back strap sure would have helped a whole lot. I am glad you are putting out these videos to help beginners.
Yes, sir my friend you are most welcome! I’m glad to do it. The buck back does work really well. Thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
Awesome! I’m glad ya enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words! And taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care of yourself my friend and do come again, please. I always enjoy hearing from folks and especially the older hands. Love you guys
I've watch homestead horsemanship on TH-cam also. JR Rosa is a Christian man. Before he starts his training, he prays over them. It's amazing to see the horses relax. Do you pray over them before you start training? I'm so glad you take so much precautions when you are first starting. In this train video, you once again show how they're smart enough to release the pressure themselves. Keep safe brother Zach. God bless
Thank you, Mr. James! I don’t particularly pray over the animals, but I do pray over the situation. If that makes any sense… Anyway, thank you so much for the kind encouraging words. And thank you for taking time to watch comment on my video. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care my friend and do come again, please
At about1:16:00 that butt back strap finally penetrated my thick skull and made good sense to me. Glad I held out until I saw the light. You are a great trainer. Thank you.
You’re most welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and understand the buck back strap. Thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment! I truly appreciate it. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Yes ma’am, you are very welcome! And thank you for taking time to watch comment. Thank you also for the kind words as always! Take care of my friend and do come again please. God bless you as well.

Took me a couple of days to complete the video.(Been under the weather,so to speak.) Good video, good content..you younger fellows who are interested in this sort of thing need to take this all to heart. I am interested ,just too old to get into it.👍🥰
Well, I’m glad ya got to see it all and thanks for taking time to watch it. I surely appreciate it. And thanks for the kind words my friend. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
Thank you so much, my friend, that means a lot to me. I can’t seem to shake this old car for some reason. But hopefully soon. Thank you for the prayers. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment as always. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again.
Thank you very much! I plan to start working for probably by this weekend. So I’ll have some more exciting videos out soon… Thank you so much and thanks for taking time to watch and comment! Take care and do come again please.
After a few days delay I finally got to watch this episode. You are on the way to have several mule teams, as with four mules you can with different combinations eventually make six teams, and they all will look fine; given your patience in training they will also work well. I suggest, though, that you use a regular driving whip which will reach further and can be handled more deftly.
Thank you sir. I prefer using sticks for a couple reasons over whips…1. I tend to sharpen one end of it just a little and I’ll poke them instead of smacking them to keep from upsetting the others. And teach them not to backup while standing still. A whip can cause the others to startle and start moving. 2. I like the stick because it doesn’t make much noise when it’s swung compared to a whip. So sort of the same reasons as the first. It’s doesn’t startle the other animal as bad. But thank you for the suggestion. I have used them in times past. Now days I just use a handy stick I cut from a tree somewhere. Then I don’t have to worry about losing it or leaving it on my cart. Anyway, thank you sir for taking time to watch and comment. I’m glad ya enjoyed it. Take care my friend and do come again, please
I loved this video! You were very clear and everything was very well demonstrated. I had never heard of a buckback line. Now I totally understand it. Even though the video was long because you described each step carefully it really kept your attention because you were anticipating what is going to happen next with this first-time team! I have only driven single with horses. I have my first mule (only a long yearling now) that is not a draft but I will be training her to drive. This will help a lot. I'll have to see if you ever show how you would start a single.
Hello! Thank you so much for the kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed it and could learn something from it. That makes it work doing. I will do some single training here soon and when I do, I will mention starting a green animal single. However, if you watch the next videos that are coming out, I will explain why I do not start them single in the beginning. Anyway, thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Thank you, sir! I have enjoyed starting them. It has been a few years since I’ve started a team. I do enjoy doing it… Thank you so much for the kind words and thank you for taking time to watch and comment as always. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
Thank you very much! I was well pleased on how things turned out for day one. Thank you for such kind words and also taking time to watch and comment as always. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Thanks so much for this, very timely for me. I learned a lot, will watch a few more times. Have a wild mustang that I've spent a lot of time with but have been nervous about this final step. This will help. Thank you.
You are most welcome! Just remember to be extra extra extra careful! Take your time and be safe. If I were you, I would watch the rest of these videos first before I attempted a whole lot… I wish you the best of luck! Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
I pray all you people in Tennessee. That the hurricane that’s hit in Florida will not do any damage to you people up in Tennessee. God bless you be praying for your safety and the safety of your mules International Amen.
Thank you Mr Rex! I pray you all are safe there where you are as well. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment: take care and do come again, please
Sure did enjoy your video that was fun and educational I've been around horses all my life and I picked up a few ideas thank you for sharing you do a fantastic job thank you
Thank you sir and thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I will have more videos out in the coming days of the two. Take care and do come again, please
I had to watch this video in two parts because I didn’t want to miss anything! It was so good I may watch it again. I have a chance to buy two weanlings, one John and one Molly. I have been hesitant because even though I have thirty years experience with draft horses I know nothing about miles, until now. I have some thinking to do. What’s your tale on John mules. Excellent video and great advice. Bless you.
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and could get something from it worth doing. Horse mules or John mules as some people call them, can be a little harder to get along with. And they usually don’t settle down as quick as a Molly. It takes them a little longer to mature. About like humans I guess. Anyway, thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment. I sure appreciate it. Take care, my friend and I wish you the best.
Thank you, sir! I am doing a short clip video today of how to make a butt bag with the measurements and everything that you need. I will be posting it tomorrow and hopefully that will help you. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Take care and do come again, please.
Thank you, Mr. Gary! I really appreciate that my friend. Thank you also for taking time to comment. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Thank you, Mr. Herschel! You’re welcome my friend and I’m glad you enjoyed it. That makes it work doing. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment on our video. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
That was a great learning video Zack, believe you will have them going good in a week if you drive them every day.May is a little stubborn but she is a beauty,She don’t stupid by all means,I thought June did for the first time, Alice is a great mule. She has a lot of patience with those colts. It’s funny to watch them, but you’re doing a great job buddy. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait for the next video. God bless.
Thank you, sir! And yes, you are right they will come around with a little bit of time. Thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment. Take care of my friend and do come again please
Another great video! I could definitely make one on all the wrong ways to do it. I’ve been in my fair share of wrecks. I tell them if you haven’t been in one, you haven’t broke very many.
Haha, well I’m glad you got a laugh Mr Grady. Thanks for checking in my friend. And taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Yes, sir, I will! And thank you for the kind words. Also, thank you for taking time to watch and comment! I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and come again, please
Thank you so much! And yes, these animals are so resilient. They learn quick… I just wish people had the same aptitude. Thank you so much for the kind words and thank you for taking time to watch and comment! Take care my friend and do come again please
Thank you, my friend and yes, Alice is steady! That is crucial in a breaking horse or mule. Thank you so much for the kind words, and thank you for taking time to watch and comment on our video. Take care and do come again, please
Does your training cart have brakes? Part one slick , on the hold back , wow !! If one is ever too hype for harness work , do they make nice riding mule, it seems they would??
No sir, no brakes on the cart. They don’t do any good anyhow. The cart is too lite. They’ll just drag it. I had a cart once that had brakes. I went to get a load of corn with a gravity wagon behind it and 4 horses in front. The cart brakes were useless. Everytime id hit the brakes, it would skid sideways. But the horses could hold it. So I give up on ever having any brakes on these carts. In this particular instance with this setup tho, brakes are dragging behind us. lol. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment my friend. Take care and do come again, please.
Great job at explaining every step of the way. Enjoyed watching it. I will say the rein line around your neck made me nervous but as my Dad taught me "there's a 1000 ways to skin a cat". Who skins a cat lol now that I think about it⁉️ Y'all stay safe🙏🇺🇸🇨🇱💗✌️
Thank you! As far as the lines, they’re not tied. Just draped over my shoulders to keep them from getting tangled up around my seat and feet. So nothing to worry about, but I do appreciate your concern. And yes, there are always more than one way to do things! 3+2=5 but so does 4+1…thanks for your kind thoughts and words! And thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please.
Great job Zac! I was wondering when you are going back to Thompson Appalachian with a load? I talked to one of the owners and told him to check out the video U did there.
Thank you, sir, I really appreciate it! I was actually down there this last week. I hauled some logs in. And I talked to the procurement manager. And we are going to do a mill tour here soon. That will be exciting thank you so much for talking to the owners and putting in a good word for me. I really appreciate it! Take care of my friend and thank you for taking time to watch and comment!
Absolutely. I will get with them and see what yall work out. Nick is wanting me to come by and check out the progress on the 2 hurdle mills might be able to catch you there to if possible.
Well, he is my stepson… He now has his drivers license and he is with us for a week and then his dad for a week. He needed a job to where he could be consistent. And he didn’t think working for me would be fair to his dad. Because he would be over here with us on his weeks with his dad. So, he took a job at the local tractor place. I miss him too, he was a good help. Thank you for taking time to comment. Take care and do come again.
Yessir..they all did that day..and I give them all they want. Grain, hay, and clean water. They earned it. I believe in feeding them good and taking care of them. I expect a lot, but I give a lot too. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Like anything else, it is a tool. When used right it will do good. When used wrong, it will be wrong. Nothing more, nothing less! Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care do come again, please
Not while using the buck back…it won’t allow the buck back to work properly. Watch the second chapter in the video again. I believe I went over it there.
There is no such thing as a stupid question. So, yes, we call all young mules..colts. Either mare mule colts or horse mule colts. Anyway, thank you for the question. And thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
No I did not drive single. I don’t like to do that. Especially with a mule like June. Because she can blow up and start going sideways and backwards. Alice keeps things moving forward. And under control along with the buck back. If you don’t start any bad habits, there won’t be any. So that’s why I don’t do it like that. Yes, I will get you measurements of it. Best thing would be to email me. But I’ll try and add it in a video here soon also. Thanks for the questions and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again.
Team lines with tie backs from Alice’s hames to the colts. Cross lines both go to Alice. Outside lines to outside colts bit rings. Tie backs from Alice hame rings to inside colts bit rings. That’s the way I prefer to drive them 3. And with Alice in the middle she will hold them…they can’t do but what she does this way. She’s the pilot mule. Or lead mule of the hitch. The evener is a 54” three horse beam. Single on the long end and 36” double tree on the short end. Works pretty well. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment Mr. Herschel. Take care of my friend and do come again please
I was curious about how much you make at the mill with an average load on the side loader truck? I was thinking of buying an old uhaul and building a log bed on it but those are only gmc 5500 so that’s leaving another 6k payload on the table by not getting a 6 class. At least legally
It’s not enough for what you can haul. At best…a single axle diesel rated for 33k minimum. And you can do alright. My gas truck isn’t very efficient because you just simply can’t haul enough for the fuel burn and time it takes to get it to the mill in this day and age economy. Diesels will get better mileage and save time because you can haul more at a time. I wouldn’t even consider anything less than that imho. Loads differ in pay based off of grade. But an average load will pay $695.00. And that will have to be split with the landowner. So a typical load would be $417.00 on my part. That has to pay for the logging and trucking. Trucking around here contracted is about $70 per thousand bdft. So $95 ish dollars for a typical load on my truck. That has to come out of what’s paid plus pay yourself for the logging too. There ain’t much to go around doing it that way. A single axle diesel or tandem is definitely the way to go..
Watch the first part of the video again where I explained the buck back. And I will mention why I took them off. With the stay chains on you do not get much swing in the Doubletree. And the buck back will not work. You have to take them off in order to get the swing that the buck back needs to work efficiently.
@@jimbickell9807not a problem my friend. I don’t know for sure that I actually mentioned the stay chains in the buck back part. I meant to, lol. But anyway, thanks again my friend. No bother at all.
You ever rebuild the bottom end on a chainsaw and it takes everything in you to pull it start it after the rebuild just wondering what I could've done wrong
Yes I have. I’d say you might have not got the crank centered between the bearings just right. You have to measure on both sides of the crank after installing to get it centered. You want it pretty close. Seals can make it hard to pull too. If you deleted the base gasket, that’ll raise compression and make it harder to pull also. That’s just some things to think about. Hope this helps..thanks for stopping by brother. Take care and do come again, please
@@benbaker989ten four. Yeah could be not centered or maybe an oil seal cocked a little. You’ll just have to take it back apart and look at it. Wish you well buddy😊
Many thanks. I'm still just sledging around the field as I don't have a solid trained horse, but a friend is ge.ting one soon so I hope I can put my mare up alongside the new one. From Fiona in Sheffield England If you'd like to pray for our political prisoners, I'd be very thankful. We seem to be losing freedom of speech in England! A lot of people are noticeing that we have neglected the Church.. I mean the real Church not the Anglicans!
That is awesome and I hope it works out for you. Thank you so much for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I will be praying for your politicians in your country and I hope that the church will be revived. Take care and do come again, please
Well, the best thing to do is approach and retreat. Approach just by hand only and try to rub its ears. Keep it tied up short… And approach its ears and rub it; and no matter what rub the ear, even if it’s shaking its head or whatever. And as soon as it becomes still, take your hand away. Does that make sense? Sometimes this will take several sessions to get it right. Maybe I will do a video on that particular thing. Because it is a problem with a lot of mules.
Yes, sir Mr. Thomas! I believe you were right… They both did me a good job. They always do! Thank you, my friend and thank you for taking time to watch comment as always. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please.

No stay chains on the double tree ?
Not while using the buck back…it won’t allow the buck back to work properly. Watch the second chapter in the video again. I believe I went over it there.
Maybe a stupid question from a horse guy - do you call all young mules colts?
There is no such thing as a stupid question. So, yes, we call all young mules..colts. Either mare mule colts or horse mule colts. Anyway, thank you for the question. And thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
@@zachodommulelogging love your videos - would love a team of mules but that sadly is very unlikely.
@@african7498thank you my friend. I wish you could. Everyone should have one good mule at least in their lifetime 😊
Did you drive May and June single prior to hitching with Alice? Will you post dimensions for your buck back device?
No I did not drive single. I don’t like to do that. Especially with a mule like June. Because she can blow up and start going sideways and backwards. Alice keeps things moving forward. And under control along with the buck back. If you don’t start any bad habits, there won’t be any. So that’s why I don’t do it like that. Yes, I will get you measurements of it. Best thing would be to email me. But I’ll try and add it in a video here soon also. Thanks for the questions and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again.
Great job How long are the hold back lines long and short and mane line be carful God Bless
@@rogerpadgett3189I will do a separate video just on that…and get you the whole nine yards. How’s that?
Great job how long are the hold back lines
I will do a separate video just for the butt back and explain it then.
How do you run the lines? On3 .what can of evener you used?
A single axle diesel or tandem is definitely the way to go..
why did you undo the chains holding the eveners to the cart
Watch the first part of the video again where I explained the buck back. And I will mention why I took them off. With the stay chains on you do not get much swing in the Doubletree. And the buck back will not work. You have to take them off in order to get the swing that the buck back needs to work efficiently.
@@zachodommulelogging yep, got it, sorry to bother

That is awesome and I hope it works out for you. Thank you so much for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I will be praying for your politicians in your country and I hope that the church will be revived. Take care and do come again, please
How do you cure an ear shy mule?
Well, the best thing to do is approach and retreat. Approach just by hand only and try to rub its ears. Keep it tied up short… And approach its ears and rub it; and no matter what rub the ear, even if it’s shaking its head or whatever. And as soon as it becomes still, take your hand away. Does that make sense? Sometimes this will take several sessions to get it right. Maybe I will do a video on that particular thing. Because it is a problem with a lot of mules.
I guess you had better hug mercy's neck for helping ,then when you get that done go kiss Alice rite in the mouth for her part
Really Really great job
Yes, sir Mr. Thomas! I believe you were right… They both did me a good job. They always do! Thank you, my friend and thank you for taking time to watch comment as always. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please.
