The days of superhero babyfaces are over. Vince needs to realize that. Roman can still sell merch and the kids will still love him, but don't expect the audience to accept him or stop booing him. That's the main problem. With Cena they just accepted that half the crowd (on a good night) was going to boo him. "The crowd is cheering for Punk instead of Cena? Who cares! He's making us millions no matter how much they hate him!" But right now they're literally dedicating all of their attention and creativity to trying to get the audience to like him. And the entire show is suffering for it. Because instead of actually filling an entire show with storylines and interesting content, they're doing everything they can to convince internet smarks that Roman Reigns is cool.
If Vince ever stops being so stubborn (or dies/becomes too senile to run the company and Triple H takes over the booking), Roman can still be saved from this bad booking. Turn him f-ing heel, and have the fans' rejection of him be the storyline reason for him becoming a heel. This has worked so many times in the past, both in WWE and in other promotions. It would work for Roman. He knows how to play the heel. But also, don't make him the top heel right away. In the short term they need to take him off TV for a little bit because of how overexpose he's become and how badly fans are reacting to that. So have Brock or Braun kayfabe injure him a Summerslam. That would be the right first step. Then when Roman comes back and doesn't get the usual "returning star" pop, make that the spark of his official heel turn. After Roman turns heel, he doesn't need to become a charisma machine like the Rock, he just needs to be solid on the mic (he's quite capable of that when Vince isn't feeding him cringy lines), good in the ring (he does this already), and attack wrestlers that the fans like.
Roman was pushed too far, too soon, and there's no way to undo that! Bloody Turn the Man Heel and let him embrace d heat and hate and boo's! And don't let him Mainevent for next 10 years atleast!

Go back and watch Cena vs. Rusev at Fastlane. That was the night Rusev's push died. Cena passed out in The Accolade after a low blow and Michael Cole made it seem like Rusev robbed a bank. He completely discredited the biggest win of his career in the name of protecting Cena even more. Cena should have tapped and there didn't need to be a low blow, but that's forgivable. Just don't tell your announcer to tell everyone that Cena actually won and this match didn't count.

I guess it's fun to cherry pick when it is and isn't okay to go against fan expectations. 2. Heels beating your top face clean? That's not how things work. There are things called storyline, entertainment, and payoff. All of those are reasons why you have your top face beat your hottest heel on the biggest stage of all. Sometimes wrestling is about telling a story or being entertaining - not about the fictional win loss record of your favorite performer. And it makes more sense from a storyline standpoint for the heroic face to beat the dastardly heel. There's more to wrestling than getting over who the internet thinks has the most impressive moveset.
The thing is they shouldn't have put him up against Cena in the first place. Your reasoning is right, the babyface should win this match to tell a good story. But it should've been someone who actually benefited from that victory. A new babyface they want to build up. Not the fucking wall called John Cena at which every young heel breaks his neck by running into it. And even then it was completely unnecessary to bury Rusev by having Cena beat him two more times. One is quite enough. But beating a new guy three times in a row basically just tells the audience that they don't have to bother with this loser anymore. Suggestion off the top of my head: Roman vs. Rusev. Roman is a new babyface they want to establish so instead of strapping a rocket to his back, have him be a midcarder to prove himself first, and win the US title from Rusev. No rematch after Wrestlemania to keep both guys strong. Just transition into different feuds. The backlash for Roman wouldn't be where it is today and Rusev wouldn't have been buried six feet under in a good, strong showing against Roman without additional losses. Cena could've main evented against Brock as a rematch to Summerslam (instead of the rushed Night of Champions rematch the year earlier) and still have the Seth Rollins cash-in to prevent another predictable Cena beating the odds-scenario. Also have Seth win his match against fucking Orton. Nothing worse than a guy who wins the title via shenanigans after being soundly beaten only hours before by yet another old timer. Cashing in the MitB already throws enough doubt over a wrestlers credibility as a Champion, but being a loser on top of it completely destroys it.

I have to say I feel bad for Roman. From everything he is a good worker, but being thrusted in are face has killed what could have been. Go back and watch Cena vs. Rusev at Fastlane. That was the night Rusev's push died. Cena passed out in The Accolade after a low blow and Michael Cole made it seem like Rusev robbed a bank. He completely discredited the biggest win of his career in the name of protecting Cena even more. Cena should have tapped and there didn't need to be a low blow, but that's forgivable. Just don't tell your announcer to tell everyone that Cena actually won and this match didn't count.

Should they have done what they did? No, probably not, but you raise a fair point. He clearly did time his walkout in order to fuck them ahead of their biggest show. So at WrestleMania, you would book an unstoppable foreigner monster heel who hates America and who has spent the last six months crushing babyfaces to come out and cleanly beat the top face of your promotion? No. That's stupid. Cena was always going to go over him clean at Mania and anyone who thinks it should have been booked any differently is insane.
People should be more upset with his booking following the loss to Cena, but that's all on how awful Creative is. Still, as with all monster heels who debut undefeated, it's all downhill once that winning streak comes to an end and they get their first loss. Rusev was bound to suffer afterwards, and only recently has he managed to get over organically... and will soon be punished for it.
Biff the BearKiller Yes. Why?
1. Because it is different. Why do the cliched American defeats evil foreign heel for the billionth time? It is over done and it is stupid to have the face win all the time.
2. Rusev needed more of the push. Why the hell was Cena pushed in that match? What does it accomplish long term?
Cena should've won at WrestleMania, but Rusev should've been allowed to win the following ppv or the one after. Doesn't have to be clean but at least give him one W to leave on a high note
1. Triple H beating Sting is different and unexpected. Asuka losing to Charlotte is different and unexpected. People still complain about that. I guess it's fun to cherry pick when it is and isn't okay to go against fan expectations.
2. Heels beating your top face clean? That's not how things work. There are things called storyline, entertainment, and payoff. All of those are reasons why you have your top face beat your hottest heel on the biggest stage of all. Sometimes wrestling is about telling a story or being entertaining - not about the fictional win loss record of your favorite performer. And it makes more sense from a storyline standpoint for the heroic face to beat the dastardly heel. There's more to wrestling than getting over who the internet thinks has the most impressive moveset.
The thing is they shouldn't have put him up against Cena in the first place. Your reasoning is right, the babyface should win this match to tell a good story. But it should've been someone who actually benefited from that victory. A new babyface they want to build up. Not the fucking wall called John Cena at which every young heel breaks his neck by running into it. And even then it was completely unnecessary to bury Rusev by having Cena beat him two more times. One is quite enough. But beating a new guy three times in a row basically just tells the audience that they don't have to bother with this loser anymore.
Suggestion off the top of my head: Roman vs. Rusev. Roman is a new babyface they want to establish so instead of strapping a rocket to his back, have him be a midcarder to prove himself first, and win the US title from Rusev. No rematch after Wrestlemania to keep both guys strong. Just transition into different feuds. The backlash for Roman wouldn't be where it is today and Rusev wouldn't have been buried six feet under in a good, strong showing against Roman without additional losses.
Cena could've main evented against Brock as a rematch to Summerslam (instead of the rushed Night of Champions rematch the year earlier) and still have the Seth Rollins cash-in to prevent another predictable Cena beating the odds-scenario. Also have Seth win his match against fucking Orton. Nothing worse than a guy who wins the title via shenanigans after being soundly beaten only hours before by yet another old timer. Cashing in the MitB already throws enough doubt over a wrestlers credibility as a Champion, but being a loser on top of it completely destroys it.

Oh, you mean like Roman Reigns? I'm sure that decision would have been well received. No, you want your hottest heel to spend all that heat on your biggest draw. That's why heels exist. To make your faces - especially your biggest draw - look good.
Yeah, my argument isn't for how Rusev was done after WrestleMania. It's specifically for WrestleMania. Still, considering the favors that Cena did for the United States Championship, keeping it on him at the end of the feud was a good idea. There's no denying Creative dropped the ball with him after Mania, even though he was bound to lose momentum after his streak ended.
