The background of the song is essential to know. The title of the song is "Ornery (or "Fastidious" or "Finicky") Horses". The song has nothing to do with horses in reality - the horses are being used as a metaphor for life. Stalin pursued the Cossack and finally destroyed them. Many were deported to Siberia.
During the Soviet era, especially in the Stalin era after World War II, the number of Cossack fell from an estimated 11 million to 140,000. Only in 1992 were the Cossack rehabilitated by Boris Yeltsin (perestroika). Only a few Cossack survived and are now trying to build a new life for themselves.
