Ordered one for me and 2 as gifts for my god-kids. I had no idea what to expect and this was a great orientation. Can't wait to get started. Thanks, Jordan!
Thank you Jordan! My granddaughter won an Echo at school and thanks to your video I understand how to set it up and use it. This was the first time I have viewed you channel, I "Liked" it and immediately became a subscriber.
I just got an Echo and I have a dot on order. Scheduled for delivery May 3rd. I have Alexa controlling my Sensi (bought after seeing your video) some Cree and Belkin bulbs and a Belkin Switch. Looking forward to Amazon releasing more directly supported Belkin devices. IFTTT can be a little flakey.
+Travis Lindberg I need to get more into the IoT / connected home side of things myself. I've got the Sensi, but that's pretty much the smartest connected item in the house.
Great review. I just bought my Amazon Echo Dot today. I have an Amazon Echo too, so it will be interesting how the new update works when you have two devices near each other. Only the nearest one is supposed to respond, not both like before. Mine's going on a night stand as an alarm clock / radio too. I use mine to control my Philips Hue light system as well. Got this because I can connect large external stereo speakers up to it.
Was given one for Christmas but need to figure out need to figure out how to incorporate into a non technology based life! Would like to see more real life applications. I already have an alarm clock!
Thank you very much for these instructions. Now my Alexa Echo 1st Generation is set up. And thanks for saying we can connect speakers for nice music sound 👍🙏🏼 Vrinda Krishna
Looking forward to getting my new Echo Dot and setting it up courtesy of your video. Just need to get Alexa downloaded to my iphone. Not sure what that entails.
Thank you. You edit well. However, I was looking to see if it just plugs in the wall (like a can opener), or if you have to plug in an auxiliary cable in addition to a power cord. I read that, and I have no idea what that is. As you can gather, I am *not* technically oriented, and when I read "auxiliary cable", I went online to see what they mean. You didn't show how it plugs into the wall or if you had an "auxiliary cable", whatever that is. I wish you could just plug it in like an electric pencil sharpener.
So now you have an internet connected device that listens to everything going on in your home... Apart from the big brother potential it's pretty cool though :-)
Simon Als Nielsen Not always, but this is much simpler to notice, If you see any network activity higher when nothing than the echo is on, something's up.
I can't seem to connect to the WiFi? When I go to the WiFi setting on my Android it only gives me other networks BUT Amazon... :( Do y'all know what to do?
I got one for Christmas and so far I love it. It woke me up this morning as I set the alarm last night. The only question I have is. Is it portable? can it go with you everywhere?
It's not exactly portable, no. You can unplug it and plug it back in somewhere else, but you'll have to configure it to connect to wifi or a portable hotspot wherever you go.
Okay thank you. So I can take it with me everywhere as long as It can connect to the internet WiFi. That's good because I spend most of my time at work so by the time I get home I'm so tired I don't use it.
Thanks for the tips. Everything you showed was great, but I wished you would have spent more time talking about the Echo App and shown the actual downloading process of installing the app. I.E. I have two pcs and one Amazon Fire tablet. Should I install the echo app on my pc or tablet? How often do you use the Echo app after installing it on a device?
as far as I'm aware, there's not an Echo app for the PC. You can go to alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html once you've got everything set up and view things about your Echo, but the initial setup has to be done from a mobile device, so your Fire tablet. Once you set up the Echo, you shouldn't need to spend much time in the app or the website. You'll have to go in there to set up purchasing options, if you want to buy things using it, and you can go in there to manage alarms, but you can do that with your voice also. If you want to manage smart home devices (connected light bulbs, wall outlets, door locks, etc.) you'll have to use the app for that as well.
Well hmm. i suppose until i really know more about these items, i probably should wait. just hate to pass up a Good deal but great vid. thks fr sharing.
Hi! I'm not so good with new technology but my son bought me this for my birthday. He then bought some sort of cable. Is the cable for speakers? I did get through the entire process of setting it up, etc - now I just need advice on that cable thing. Thanks!
Very informative and well presented. May I ask a question? What other Amazon products do you need for the dot to work? You had the app on your phone to link it to WIFI, can I just downloaded that app? Finally, I have a Kindle Fire HD 8 the newest Kindle, it has the Alexa app but in the UK it doesn't work yet. Is that the same situation as the dot? Sorry in advance for the daft questions, but I'm old :) Congratulations again on demo of the dot, it was excellent. Thank you.
You shouldn't need any other products to make it work. Technically, you don't even need the app, there's a website where you can do the whole setup using a wifi-connected laptop or desktop, alexa.amazon.co.uk/ And since they sell the Echo Dot in the UK, I'd assume it should work just fine there. amzn.to/2rEIBSs. Actually, now that I think about it, I've seen another TH-cam creator in the UK who has several Echo devices, and they all work for him: th-cam.com/video/ffCXFaplmLQ/w-d-xo.htmlm57s
Handy still struggled though in the end shut alexa down restarted and mived router closer did the trick got a little messge saying was connected - clicked on it
can you add the dot to alexa (big echo) in kitchen to bedroom ? My app looks different and doesn't load same options. I have checked and no update. can you make the dot a speaker for big echo?
I currently have an echo and have ordered 2 dots to expand the coverage in my household (basically the same thing you did) my question is does this par to the original echo also so you can control the entire house from different rooms ? or do you have to pair all individual devices to this one again ? (this may cause conflicts) also say I'm in my bedroom and I set a timer and leave the room will the timer broadcast to the other echo (s) in my house, and can I cancel said timer from the other echo (s) ? I hope I am being clear enough with my questions. .. TIA
+chris anderson the connected home devices should be controllable from any echo immediately. as far as the timers/alarms, I think those are on an Echo-by-Echo device basis.
ya google now or even better cortana on something like that would be so cool. they are so mutch better then the others i have tryed. i like Cortana best. she also sound the best. Not so robotic.
+Finn Andersen Google Now has been best for me so far because I'm so tied into the Google ecosystem, so having that in a speaker would be amazing. I love having it in Android Wear watches.
ya i am also deep into Google`s world. So something from them would be really awesome . Also wish they would add that to the Shield. So you could interact more with it. at least as a option if you wanted it. :) . Only reason i like Cortana in some ways more on my OPO is she can tell jokes and sutch. :P . Seems a bit more humanish. :) . Never used Android Wear . Would love to but it would need to do what the Fitbit does + does extra things, and assume there isn't a good alternative for that yet. At Least that i have seen.
Alright so my grandparents got one for free at a casino that they go to so I was wondering do you have to have a smartphone for the dot after installing it.
No, you shouldn't. Even the initial setup technically doesn't need a smartphone, they just recommend it. You can do it with a wifi-enabled computer and browser at alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html
Oh when I said "all 3" I was talking about Pandora, Spotify and Amazon Music. I just looked at mine and I don't see a way for the Echo to play music off of your phone.
Hello, I need help. I bought the echo dot and when I try to download the app it comes up that my devise isn't compatible with this version. I have a Sony Xperia L. Is there a different version? Any help would be appreciated. JoAnne
If you have nothing to hide, then no need to worry. The gov isn't going to kick your door down unless you committed serious crimes. Alexa is always "listening" for the command word. With that said, Alexa helped the authorities recently when a lady was murdered. Alexa was recording everything. The lady knew the attacker that broke into her house. She called out his name which alexa saved. The cops were able to make an arrest with the help of alexa.
hey thanks for the vid very informative and you kept it short and sharp with the necessary information greatly appreciated thumbs up :)! can it connect to any speaker via bluetooth providing you have wifi in that home???
I think mine charges but everytime i unplug it dies and does nothing. My version is the white one with out the knob. How do i charge it and carry it around?!!?
The Echo Dot doesn't come with a built-in battery. The only Echo device that does is the Echo Tap. If you want to add a battery to the Echo Dot, you need something like this: th-cam.com/video/gdC-AO7BXR8/w-d-xo.html, but it's still not amazing for carrying it around.
Am I obligated to buy the big one to use the Echo Dot ( small )? And is Echo Dot change every speakers ( with cable ) on a bluetooth speakers If i plug the cable ? If yes that will be nice!;)
Yes, as long as the computer has wifi. Just go to alexa.amazon.com/, click "Settings", then "Set up a new device". It should walk you through the process there.
It can be done using a wifi-connected computer. Instructions are here: www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201994280 but basically, just go to alexa.amazon.com/, sign in to your Amazon account, click "Settings", click "Set up a new device" under Devices, and walk through the setup wizard there.
I love ur videos! I like how the intro is just the right amount of time, not to short, not to long. I love this.
Thank you!!!!! My mother was driving me crazy setting this up! 3 minutes of your video versus 30 minutes of her poking at things
Dude my dot plays nature sounds all night while I sleep. Wind rain even a fire place it really is kind of nice.
The neighbors from the first floor asked me why I keep shouting at my wife alexa.
hahahaha
I just got an Echo and I have a dot on order. Scheduled for delivery May 3rd. I have Alexa controlling my Sensi (bought after seeing your video) some Cree and Belkin bulbs and a Belkin Switch. Looking forward to Amazon releasing more directly supported Belkin devices. IFTTT can be a little flakey.
+Travis Lindberg I need to get more into the IoT / connected home side of things myself. I've got the Sensi, but that's pretty much the smartest connected item in the house.
+Jordan Keyes having Sensi controllable through the Echo is great, I just wish it could tell you the current temperature setting.
Just got my Amazon Tap and I just love it. I'm definitely going to purchase a Dot, but right now they are on back-order until August.
+MrGamerOfThe1980s I've been using the Dot daily, for little things, and it's great. Not sure I"d use the Tap if I bought it...
Great review. I just bought my Amazon Echo Dot today. I have an Amazon Echo too, so it will be interesting how the new update works when you have two devices near each other. Well done, Jordan! Terrific video - and helped us get our Christmas present up & going! Merry Christmas! Bill
Thank you very much for these instructions. Now my Alexa Echo 1st Generation is set up. And thanks for saying we can connect speakers for nice music sound 👍🙏🏼 Vrinda Krishna
$39 bucks during Black Friday Best Buy 2016. I also own the full size Amazon Echo, so this will be used upstairs on my night-stand.
It also played my favorite radio station WBLS, 107.5.
Tempted to get this over the original echo. Might snag one when you are able to get it without needing an echo first.
+Nicholas Grugin Can't remember, do you have a Fire TV Stick? If so, you can order one using that right now.
+Jordan Keyes do you know if it works with th original, Fire TV or just the new one, want one just between my new pc build, been on a budget lately
+Robby Lowe As long as you can talk to it (even using the app) I think you can place an order for one.
Do you need a prime account? I keep seeing/hearing it say here is a "prime" station?
Gonna buy 2 of these one for my mom for mothers day and one for me
I'll bet she will toss it or leave it in the box for a year.

Connect to WiFi
I love how I was able to understand this, not too complicated
what did they mean when you get the dot you had to either have the amazon echo or a firestick
Looking forward to getting my new Echo Dot and setting it up courtesy of your video. Just need to get Alexa downloaded to my iphone. Not sure what that entails.
question. do you need to subscribe to amazon prime to use it. you just need to connect via you wireless using their app

It uses a microUSB cable for power, just like most cell phones. The "auxiliary cable" is the 3.5mm audio cable.
Thanks. You mean just a fat plug that had techno junk in it, a plug that takes up too much space. Got it.
O
So now you have an internet connected device that listens to everything going on in your home...
Apart from the big brother potential it's pretty cool though :-)
+Simon Als Nielsen Never thought of it that way
people would have found out if it did that :), no conspiracy going on here.
Yes because broken security is always discovered immediately. Heartbleed...
Simon Als Nielsen Not always, but this is much simpler to notice, If you see any network activity higher when nothing than the echo is on, something's up.
Lynode Sure, but it could be that people with malicious intent also would figure that out, and make their implementation slightly more sophisticated.
love that he said Louisville that's the best place to be!
+Jordan Keyes just wondering what your phone case brand
Great video now I know how to connect mine. Lost the paper instructions.
Does the phone has to be on for it to respond?
No
I can't seem to connect to the WiFi? When I go to the WiFi setting on my Android it only gives me other networks BUT Amazon... :(
Do y'all know what to do?
I'm invited to purchase echo dot so excited to bring echo dot!
Enjoy!

but great vid. thks fr sharing.
Ironic ... i was watching this today and my echo dot responded to your question. The weird thing is that the forecast was the same for Louisville
Can I use my PC to connect it? I want to use my PC instead my phone.
Does anybody have BT network and uses echo dot or echo or echo plus.if so did you have any problems when setting it up?
Hi! I'm not so good with new technology but my son bought me this for my birthday. He then bought some sort of cable. Is the cable for speakers? I did get through the entire process of setting it up, etc - now I just need advice on that cable thing. Thanks!
So you don’t need the original amazon Echo for this to work?
So, can this be used as just a regular BT speaker if needed? Like pair it to my phone and play audio through it? Cheers mate.
Yosef Selim nah it needs power
Yosef Selim yus it can... through Bluetooth

What if you don't have a cell, nor want one?
Do u need Alexa to use the dot ? Cuz I dont have Alexa but I'm thanking about getting the dot
Mine set everything up but anytime I want to play music it says it can’t find it
I cannot get my echo dot to pair with my Bluetooth device.
About the music, do you have to pay for the music or it comes with Alexa already? 🤔
Handy still struggled though in the end shut alexa down restarted and mived router closer did the trick got a little messge saying was connected - clicked on it

I got it for $35 re-conditioned. It's great.
I just bought one of these things. I am returning it. This thing sucks. I don't see what the big deal is?!?!

Can it play music from your phone or does it just play from music based apps like Pandora Spotify Amazon prime music
It can do all 3.
Jason.TH-cam so it can play music that you have saved in your phone?
Oh when I said "all 3" I was talking about Pandora, Spotify and Amazon Music. I just looked at mine and I don't see a way for the Echo to play music off of your phone.
Ok thank you
If you have a service like Spotify, you CAN play music off that service through the Dot.
what was the external speaker you used?
Chris Scattergoo
Kindly guide can , phone data can be use to run echo dot I am facing problem.
does the echo have a usb that fits into laptops
What is the clock in the background. I want it!
Can you have google home and amazon echo?
Does it work if you don't have any Alexa or amazon device at all or do you need a hub or the amazon Alexa to use it
So does this work for a speaker ?
Hello, I need help. I bought the echo dot and when I try to download the app it comes up that my devise isn't compatible with this version. I have a Sony Xperia L. Is there a different version? Any help would be appreciated. JoAnne
some people might say that echo can spy your conversation everidays like big brother.

If Alexa will work without cable r not
Dose it pair with your phone or do you have to have an amazon acount to use it
This video was activating my Alexa
LOL
Same haha
Use headphones, as I do! Easily solved.

+VIVAS700 Divoom Aurabox, always in the background of my videos: th-cam.com/video/RLr9O5BfKkY/w-d-xo.html
Can you use your parents account or do you have to create your own?
Am I obligated to buy the big one to use the Echo Dot ( small )? And is Echo Dot change every speakers ( with cable ) on a bluetooth speakers If i plug the cable ? If yes that will be nice!;)
Marc Decelles if the speakers are blue tooth you can tell Alexa to pair to the Bluetooth speakers
echo dot is a stand alone... you don't have to buy the big one
Alexa said my device isn't registered. How do I register it??
Which app do you use? I can't find the official Amazon app...
if this doesn't have built in radio AM/FM then I don't see any use for this
What if i have 4G lte and dont have wifi?
How much db is the speaker
Can one go to the echo dot site on a computer instead of a cell phone?
Yes, as long as the computer has wifi. Just go to alexa.amazon.com/, click "Settings", then "Set up a new device". It should walk you through the process there.
whats the intro music called?
Im a little late 😂😂 but i just orderd one and got 20% off
do I need to get Samsung - Galaxy
do you need to buy the Alexa in order to use the echo ?
well the original echo I mean
Nope. My parents have the Echo Dot, and it works just fine for them.
Will you give away a echo dot?
windows 10, not cell?
I don't have A phone. How do I set up or hook to my wifi. I can't get it to link with my wifi.
It can be done using a wifi-connected computer. Instructions are here: www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201994280
but basically, just go to alexa.amazon.com/, sign in to your Amazon account, click "Settings", click "Set up a new device" under Devices, and walk through the setup wizard there.
mine cell phone not compatible with echo dot
Thank you so much awesome video now my Alexa works
Spot on, Alexa!
I have the same thing so when u said the questions mine answered them too LOL
i have questions are you accessible
what do you plug it into?
the included microUSB cable plugs into the included wall plug on one end, and the Echo Dot on the other.
Louisville is my home town.
i am getting one tommorow
Just got an echo dot thanks to Prime Day
Thanks this was very helpfil
I saw amazon ecod dot ad before viewing this video
Very helpful thank you
i wanna wire it through the house
Do you need the amazon echo for the echo dot?
No
This is not a setup video. You should have done a fresh install from start to finish.
