    Not to sound overly dramatic or anything, but this video has changed my life! In terms of game dev anyway, lol. After recently playing a new VR game, I have been inspired to work on my new project in VR, and after trying to find some tutorials I found a long list of example tutorials, but they seem to be setup in a way where it's overly complicated, and they break simple things into like 6 different functions... This video has given me an amazing understanding of movement in VR, thank you very much!

    Thank you so much for making this tutorial!!
    I was pulling my hair out for hours trying to figure out what was wrong with my code. I was so close because I could get movement on button press, but no sustained movement!
    I guess I needed the Floating Pawn Movement component and the Add Movement Input function.
    Thank you so much!!!

    AWESOME TUTORIAL !!!! Finally i got continuous movement to work in VR. But before I tried with Unity. I think its clear UE4 is my new Nr.1 engine. Intuitive, Great UI and functionality i did not dare to dream of, visual programming, every corner with tutorial buttons and great youtube videos - its a dream :) A senseful structure of all, easy button/input mapping for different hardware (! for example Vive Cosmos!)... - They did everything right :)

    Why the put that braindead teleportation option in instead of an ACTUALLY USEFUL movement mechanic is far beyond my smoothbrain comprehension.

    When Lisa Simpson asked Bart, that 'Zen' if a Tree falls in the woods and no one is there' question, (and he goes into mind blown enlightmentment mode), that's how I felt when he switched InputAxis nodes and I said out loud, "OH! OH WOW!" Suddenly realizing the link with the input panel and the MODULARITY of Blueprints and Nodes especially! That's two EPIPHANIES in one video... I better subscribe I guess!

    lol I've been looking for how to make a smooth rotation because EVERYONE is going for 45* angle snap rotations.
    I see why it's nauseating, but for my game it's required. I fixed the nausea with it just being a lot slower. (Fits the game very well)

    Not to nit-pick but i believe you made a mistake, the last branch in the snap turning graph, its false node should got to the "do once" reset. otherwise you have to take your finger off the thumbstick every time you want to turn 45 degrees. this makes it so you can turn over and over quickly every time you hit left or right

  • @williamweidner5425
    @williamweidner5425 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent tutorial. Best one so far....
    One problem I'm having comes from setting up player start in a map with an uneven terrain. For uneven terrains, the pawn motion seems to be locked in terms of z axis transform by default. therefore when you use motion controll to move arround the area, you can't actually travel allong the hills.
    I tried fixing this by adding a capsule collider, and adding physics, but what seems to happen is that with no other settings, the capsule doesn't stay ballance, and the player ends up rolling to the ground like a tin can.
    I tried fixing THAT by changing the contraints of the rotation to x and y. BUUUUT when I did that, and tried to move my pawn through the level, it ended up having these wierd bugs where the pawn would start rotating, and when I try to use the Gripping motion, it would impulse the character into the air and twirl it arround (I'm going to be blowing some chunks in a moment).
    How would you approach making the pawn stay upright and able to simuate gravity on an uneven landscape, and free of those impulases?

    • @underscore00
      @underscore00  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the kind words :)
      As for your issue, you can try adding a Print String node at your axis events and plugging the Axis Value into the Print String input. This will display the axis value of your joystick on screen when the game is running, which should be 0.0 if you're not touching the joystick. If it's showing a value above (or below) 0.0, you might have a loose joystick or some other hardware issue. Let me know how it goes, though! Im happy to help work through this :)

    Is there a video before describing how to set up the VR? because I see in the left oanel you have VROrign which I don't know what that mean. I follow the steps you did but I couldn't move. I would use Unreal starter but it was glitchy with me because it kept teleporting but once I deleted those functions I still kept moving everywhere so I decided to start from scratch. Appreciate the help.

    i wondered how the skyrim vr guys managed to make traversal without nausea, on movement they seem to create a vignette tunnel so your peripheral vision is narrowed, not sure if they allowed rotation at the same time as traversing

    • @underscore00
      @underscore00  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you want that vignette effect you can add a post process volume to your pawn and enable/disable it when you're moving/not moving. Increasing your cameras FOV while moving also helps to cut down on nausea since theres less motion in the center of your vision

    • @Chromiumism
      @Chromiumism 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@underscore00 Thank you for the tutorial! Wish there were more VR tutorials around. The post process idea works great when moving fast (sprinting) however imo the FOV change is a little jarring (probably because I don't know what I'm doing). Do you have any examples of FOV changing that works well?

    Double click to get a reroute! I didn`t know that.. cool. Gosh,, I learn so much more like this than in all the expensive UE4 books I buy,... I love how you/he steps through the LOGIC, and simplifies it to hitting a Plus key or a MULTIPLY (a * _not_ an x LOLOL) and the whole, PARADIGM of Blueprints is thusly, suddenly laid before one like a golden brick road! PARADIGM SHIFT sort of thing,... I 'get' (ken) Blueprints more after this short video, than after re-reading entire books about the subject... I DO things in the books way,.. I UNDERSTAND things when it goes in... 'stream of thought' mode like this, it feels like Reverse Engineering, the way I as an Artist, learn best and fastest,. Taking it all in and understanding through the 'interconnected extant context'... or something like that... Wow, 14k subscribers! There are a lot of UE4 interested ppl! I only have about 3k subs at my VR work channel ( th-cam.com/users/NextWorldVR ) I am a Hollywood Character Animator, making a high end VR game. It is so hard to find anyone to work with these days, I finally decided to just learn the engine myself. AND I DISCOVERED A HOLODECK (I can work In VR using UE4 VR Editor) Unreal is amazing, I wish I had discovered it eariler. I havecworked in 3ds Max, since it was 3D Studio for DOS but only started with unreal 3 years ago. THANK YOU FOR THE HELP FAMOUS UE4 TEACHING PERSON! :O :)

    If anyone is still using this, I just solved a problem with the current script structure that I had when trying to run it for a VR machinima I'm currently making for my university class. The problem was that the controllers would slightly move forward and upward in position from where the player started, and the rotation snaps would not work. This was caused by the {==} to clarify the deadzone as {0}. My HMD and controllers are the samsung oddyssey +, and either due to how the software works to run it or due to the controllers themselves being warped, would never send out a straight {0} to be read by unreal. This caused the lack of turning (due to the snap rotation style seen in the video) and the constant moving forward. To fix this simply replace the {==} function to a {Nearly equal (float)} and have the error tolerance be equal to the inputs that the program is reading, for me it stopped at {Error Tolerance (0.15)} while keeping {B} to {0}. I suggest doing this even if you don't neccessarily need to do it for your headset as other people may have the same problem if pushed out to market and or online.

    First, great Tutorial man, It is hard to find good UE4 VR Tutorials. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
    I do have a question involving this method. To find the move speed you multiply the input axis by a number. This is what allows for acceleration, but acceleration can be disorienting. Would it be better to just use a linear constant for movement, in order to avoid VR Sickness from acceleration(i.e. if inputValue >=0.05 set speed to 4)? I've been told to avoid acceleration in VR, but I don't have the experience to know if that includes the acceleration players have control over, or if movement and rotation should be treated differently in this aspect.

  • @nolomite3921
    @nolomite3921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the tutorial, I'm new and I learned a lot. One thing I noticed is that the rotation seems to ignore room scale, so if you move around your physical room, instead of rotating the center of the VR Headset's HMD camera, it rotates at the center of the room causing your whole body to pivot if you are not standing in the center of your room. I have no idea how to fix it, very disorientating.

    • @underscore00
      @underscore00  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, this is a limitation of the method shown in the video. I just asked an old client of mine if I could share some work, because ive made a VR rotation event that rotates around the head/camera instead of the pawn's origin point, and thankfully he said yes :)
      i.imgur.com/ZyfSAHq.jpg
      That should put you on the right track. I used a rotation component (set to 0) instead of simply rotating the player actor. If the boolean 'Smooth Rotate' is set to true, the view wont snap to a rotation value, instead it will smoothly rotate in the direction youre holding the joystick. The bit that answers your question though is the 'Pivot Transform' Set vector. The rotating movement component has a built-in vector location that it rotates around, and the calculation I made there changes it to the head location instead of the actor's origin point.
      EDIT: Forgot to mention, you can add a rotating movement component to your pawn with the green 'Add Component' button at the top of the component panel (top left by default)
      I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

    I added movement to vr in unreal on my own, but when I'm running past objects, the textures/object seems to tear really ugly, almost like a motion blur/texture vibration as I run past it. Is there a way to fix this?

    Wouldn't it be better to check that x/y values are close to zero as opposed to exactly zero? Since we probably don't want to trigger if the value is 0.00000001

      You could also use "nearly equal" to replace the deadzone part and avoid the greater than and less than calculations.

    Hi. Thanks for this useful tutorial. How may I increase the speed of my character? Right now, the add movement input only has a normalized scale so any number bigger than 1 is floored.

    • @underscore00
      @underscore00  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm thats interesting. If you crank up your movement speed variable, does anything change or do you hit a speed limit? Ill test this for myself to be sure and get back to you :)

    • @EmperorKnightlock
      @EmperorKnightlock 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@underscore00 I turned up maximum walk speed from 600 to 1000, then 3000, 4000 and it made no difference. the Movement speed variable you use multiplies the axis value (-1 to 1) by a float which then gets floored down to -1 or 1 by the add movement input node. I tried adjusting for this by increasing the maximum walk speed and then using .25, .6, 1.0 for the movement speed value but it had no effect as well.

    Hey bev, what vr headset/controller do you use/recommend?

    • @underscore00
      @underscore00  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At my current job I use Oculus Rift, Vive and Odyssey Pro and I can tell you that Odyssey Pro is easily best of those 3. Personally I got a Rift S shortly after they released it and it's amazing :) as a recommendation though, you might as well get a Quest for cordless gaming and if you dont have a beast PC. If you have a beast PC though, Rift S is the best bang for buck.

    • @ProtoPropski
      @ProtoPropski 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@underscore00
      I use a Odyssey + as well, and its really great with its AMOLED Display the colors just pop, not to mention the Anti-Screen Door effect film which makes it almost impossible to notice any Screen Door Effect, and if your PC is strong enough to handle at least 200% Super Sampling of the native headset resolution, then it's a no brainer as long as you get it close to $300
      For me, its the best headset I can currently get that'll be compatible with my setup, as I don't have any VR Compatible Computers with a Display Port (I'm currently playing on a Laptop)
      If I would upgrade, I'd rather go all the way to the Valve Index, as long as Valve works out the manufacturing issues people have been reporting, though I'm sure an upgrade like that won't be for awhile as I need a DP PC.

    Hey! What kind of VR headset are you using in this tutorial? There are no options for "Motion controller" in the Inputs in project settings for me. I followed the tutorial and it's as if it's not affecting anything at all. I'm using an Oculus Rift S.

    • @underscore00

      I also used an oculus rift S for this tutorial. Weird. Have you tried checking your project settings under input for the axis mappings? That might be where you need to set the controllers, but i just piggy-backed off the built-in VR controller. Definitely hit me up if youre still running into trouble, im more than happy to help :)

    I know this is a silly question, but I'm new to Unreal Engine 4; is there any way I can prevent my hands from clipping into things? Let's say through the ground or a table. I want them to be a physics type item with collisions, but I can't seem to do it by myself. Anyone know how to?

    • @uberantel
      @uberantel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe this can help you: "Lets Create Physical Animations" by Matthew Palaje, a problem with this approach is that your player gets a strange feeling of 'out your body' experience, BONEWORKS is an excellent example with reports of the body being trapped inside physics puzzles
