5:06 Matt Smith was actually a footballer (and wanted to do it as a career) until he had a back injury and became an actor, which might explain why they bought attention to it and let him have a bit of fun with it in the episode - just a thought.
@@marcuswalters8093 You watch it after. Before you were safe not knowing of the horrors of the James cordon sketch show but now you've probably seen at least some of it & will never actually forget the horrors.
Years ago when this aired, I remember seeing a comment in Doctor Who magazine, where somebody recommended that Matt Smith's line upon Craig opening the door at the beginning of the episode should have been "Hello. I'm your new Tenant". Always made me chuckle.
Also the perception filter wasn't trying to pretend something was there, but that something wasn't (like the TARDIS' perception filter in Boom Town). It's why Craig never truly bothered with the man upstairs aside from like one single time. The perception filter just never made him want to bother. The people walking by were coerced into noticing which is why they did. The way the perception filter is portrayed here is correct Harry in my opinion.
@@Jeevzsk same, like the chameleon circuit makes it look like the upstairs of the house and the perception filter stops you noticing that the house didn't use to have an upstairs
No, I think you are wrong. ‘Perception filter, there never was a top floor’ Opposite of its intended use, the perception filter would make you not notice whatever was there rather than insist a top floor was there and now gone, a chameleon circuit makes it look like a top floor. The TARDIS uses both, perception filter so people tend to ignore it or treat it as harmless / uninteresting, it doesnt make it look like a police box or house.
Jon Smith hes referring to the top floor just being a ship, as in there never really was a top floor. Think of it this way: if the actual TARDIS landed on the roof and it looked part of the scenery and links to the home below, is it now a top floor? No, because there never was a top floor.
@@Kranitoko yeah I know, but if it was a perception filter, as the Doctor said in my quote, it wouldnt look like a top floor, people just wouldnt want to look at it or notice it. How is the ship appearing as a top floor if the perception filter never alters the appearance of something?
I don't think this episode was trying to be anything more than The James Corden Episode. It's a fun romp that I remember from when I was a kid and I think is still really fun to watch today.
The "perception filter" aspect was that people ignored it and didn't really question where the second story of a previously one-story house came from, otherwise people (especially Craig I'd imagine) would be gawping at a magic house. Although the situation raises the question of why Craig had the only one-story house in the entire neighbourhood, I don't think I've ever seen a street of terraced houses that were all normal except for a one-story house at the end. It would've worked better imo if there were a bunch of one-story houses and Craig's seemed to be the only two-story house until the end.
Craig's house being the only one-story house on a two-story road is quite weird, and that's exactly why covering that weirdness up making it normal makes a perfect hiding spot. :)
@@hardanson True, but it makes you wonder why that street was designed that way. Most terraced streets were put up in the victorian era when they needed homes for local factory workers, did they run out of people to home and think "cba building that half of the house then"?

I mean that’s how perception filters work in the show, most of the time we just see it on people instead of large objects. it's literally one of my fav episodes because i'm obsessed with the domestic fluff that is so rare in doctor who. i genuinely have so much fun in this ep that i could not care less about the monster/villain whatever being shit, its just a grand old time. also seeing the doctor try to blend in with humans is so entertaining and i actually love how abnormally perfect he was at some things without realizing how annoying that could be to craig lol. i also liked the dynamic between craig and the doctor alot. idk i have such a soft spot for this ep because it is a huge comfort ep for me so i almost couldn't watch this video bc i knew you we're going to give it a bad review 😂 but curiosity won out lmao. and honestly u make some valid points but i've rewatched this one an absurd amount of times 😂
Roberts has since complained about the show's "PC Censorship" after Russell, so God knows what jokes Steven had to cut out of this thing. As Ten once said: _"pOLiTiCaL cOrReCtNeSs gOnE mAd."_
With the amount of exercise the doctor get's with his adventures plus his high iq it wouldn't be surprising he is good at sports The doctor has some weird mental powers shown throughout doctor who like with the clockworks on 10th so it's fine on why he gave him the information by hitting heads
I feel like the point about The perception filter is wrong.. I think its all to do with the silence' ability to make everyone forget them. Every time Amy did notice that room in her house she would forget it as soon as she walked away. Same with the flat above. Whenever someone looks into it existing they probably immediately forget about it. Craig knows it's there but as he's never (or so least by our knowledge, he may have but then forgotten about it) entered the flat so he's never had to forget about what's inside he just accepts the story his brain probably suspects about the flat that he comes up with everyone he thinks about the flat It also makes sense rhat the silence were probably observing amy growing up and used that room as their base. And thebones from the flat were probably killed by humans killing them on sight
I....I quite liked it. I'm not a massive Corden fan, like most of Britain, but I enjoyed it. The Doctor doing football. It's decent. And once upon a time I was walking down the street and a tapping on the window of a house. It turns out it is an old man, he's urgently tapping the window. I had things to do and places to be, but it presented as an emergency and I engaged. I think most people would be drawn into a situation like this.
I didn't realize how hated this episode was. I quite enjoyed this episode for it making the normal mystery sci-fi take a bit of a backseat for just a silly episode of 11 trying to fit in with his wacky personality, and his interactions with Craig. I don't take this episode seriously, cuz I don't think it was supposed to be an actual episode for doctor who, but just a silly episode.
I can’t fault this episode cause I like to have a lighter episode in the mix sometimes. As long as it’s rare, a lighter episode can provide nice relief before the darker finale.
It was never meant to be a serious episode. We cried our eyes out with Van Gogh the week before. We needed a loony funny episode. Few notes * Matt Smith is a former academy football player and using that was smart in terms of resources available. *The Doctor spends 4 days...it's not 4 days in The Tardis...it's outside time! * The key was not the power of love but thr willingness to take risks and move forward with life. * Not a fan of Cordon at all...but his character is not clinging or holding her back, they both or not risk takers...that's the point of why she was no an acceptable pilot. * When the Doctor recruits a cat to spy, you just accept it and turn your brain off. Sometimes you just have fun. That's why Tremors is a cult classic. It has to be hard to review episodes because we like what we like. But a one-off that turns Dr Who into a sitcom...is fun to many and sill beats the entirety of Series 11-12.
9/10! How dare you under-rate this classic! Lol. You made some great points but I just have so much fun with this one and I think something light-hearted needed at this point in S5. I understand your point about it suddenly being the middle of the afternoon when just before it was evening but considering the episode was broadcast in June, it makes a lot more sense
I thought the tardis was hijacked by the silence? And the attempted self made tardis was also silence made? But I might be jumping through hoops to connect things. I think it looks similar and I’m 50/50 that it’s mentioned in an episode going forwards idk
I didn't hate this episode overall, but boy did I hate the "power of love" ending. In fact I hated the entire romance plot. This episode had a few great moments, but definitely was total filler and contains more I didn't like than liked. For me this episode is the epitome of 4/10.
This is the first episode of DW that I ever saw. I was so confused, but I figured it all out eventually. I understand why my father liked this show (though sadly he passed before the 2005 reboot). But oh my, this as a first episode was an interesting introduction to say the least. But I'm glad my mom told me to watch some because my dad liked it, because now I love it
I've always loved this episode, Smith's run is one of my favourites and this is in the top half of those, at least. It's a fun jaunt, I don't take it seriously - you really can't whenever Corden's showing his mug.
Being an uncultured American with very little familiarity with James Cordin, I remember thinking this episode was a refreshing change of pace since it wasn’t really trying to hide the fact that it was filler - it was just a silly, comedy focused adventure. But I do agree that the plot falls to pieces under a critical lens.
I personally enjoy this episode as just a fun watch if I don't really want to pay much attention. I also don't hate James Corden like most people do, so I find it more bareable in that regard.
I found this spisode entertaining, and I was liking it up until the ending. I hated that they saved the day with "the power of love". My God, I wasn't expecting much of this episode but it still managed to disappoint.
I do like certain elements of the writing for this episode and I think Sophie is a really good character (plus I like Daisy Haggard who plays her) but I know I'd like it even better if James Corden wasn't in it. Stuff like the Doctor becoming Mr Football just seems like it's trying to pastiche Matt Smith as an individual. I'm actually a big fan of filler episodes as they allow a breather from a series narrative, but compared to the likes of Amy's Choice this pales in comparison.
I always liked this episode and it’s more slice of life feel. I hate James Corden so much but I like both of his Doctor Who episodes and his character.
The best part about this episode was the speculation on the creepy clown painting and the pseudo-tardis playing more of a role later. Such wasted potential.
yup, when I learnt that back when I bought DWM and Gareth Roberts revealed an extract of the script, I felt like TFS Vegeta realising TFS Broly was the legendary Super Saiyan... it sounded so goddamn cool! Such a missed opportunity. I notice now several elements point fingers to Meglos which were all elements from the original Meglos Story... To me, the man upstairs was obviously going to be Meglos luring people to body snatch (Meglos needed an earthling for his plan), the footie fans glitching out was pretty much a parallel to the chronic hysteresis, the alien ship looked VERY Zofla-Thuran in design, and the fact that there was in terms of the Doctor Who universe, a bargain bin TARDIS being built sort of gave a throwback to the fact Meglos used Earthling George Morris' (that was his name in the Novelisation, which I proudly own) body to disguise as the 4th Doctor (so Meglos might've gained a 'Doctor Complex' after his planet was atomised).
This is one of the few episodes of new who I’ve not watched for years. I watched it once as a kid and not once again since then. Also, I find it really distracting how the ship at the end looks like the silences ship in day of the moon.
It's the same ship. The Silence have been going backward into the Doctor's timeline (see: Time of the Doctor, all of season six, the Pandorica Opens two-parter etc) to kill him & prevent him reaching Trenzalore. The fact that it is a Silence ship reinforces the reason the TARDIS is stuck in a time loop as it will soon be in a couple of episodes.
Peter Kay and James Corden are decently similar in my mind. Both reasonably large men with a career in comedy and played a minor Doctor Who character the difference being despite not being particular fond of ether outside the show I hate Peter Kay's Abzorbaloff and love James Corden's every man Craig ESPECIALLY in season 6 with the Cybermen and "Stormageddon Lord Of All" and this episode (with a couple of moments as exceptions) is over a one of my favorites and nobody can change my mind on that :-)
For all the reasons stated, I'd say 3 is about as good as it deserves. However, for casting James Corden to play James Corden (the only role he ever actually does play), I award the episode zero out of ten, and may God have mercy on its soul.
5:06 Matt Smith was actually a footballer (and wanted to do it as a career) until he had a back injury and became an actor, which might explain why they bought attention to it and let him have a bit of fun with it in the episode - just a thought.

it's literally one of my fav episodes because i'm obsessed with the domestic fluff that is so rare in doctor who. i genuinely have so much fun in this ep that i could not care less about the monster/villain whatever being shit, its just a grand old time. also seeing the doctor try to blend in with humans is so entertaining and i actually love how abnormally perfect he was at some things without realizing how annoying that could be to craig lol. i also liked the dynamic between craig and the doctor alot. idk i have such a soft spot for this ep because it is a huge comfort ep for me so i almost couldn't watch this video bc i knew you we're going to give it a bad review 😂 but curiosity won out lmao. and honestly u make some valid points but i've rewatched this one an absurd amount of times 😂
I'll never forgive the English for inflicting James Cordon on the rest of us.
You can keep him
Roberts has since complained about the show's "PC Censorship" after Russell, so God knows what jokes Steven had to cut out of this thing. As Ten once said:
_"pOLiTiCaL cOrReCtNeSs gOnE mAd."_
first of all, before i watch, i hope hes kind. i love this episode
oh god
Lmao
With the amount of exercise the doctor get's with his adventures plus his high iq it wouldn't be surprising he is good at sports
The doctor has some weird mental powers shown throughout doctor who like with the clockworks on 10th so it's fine on why he gave him the information by hitting heads
Craig knows it's there but as he's never (or so least by our knowledge, he may have but then forgotten about it) entered the flat so he's never had to forget about what's inside he just accepts the story his brain probably suspects about the flat that he comes up with everyone he thinks about the flat
It also makes sense rhat the silence were probably observing amy growing up and used that room as their base.
Love this episode, just a fun standalone
"Does the Tardis even have food? Or did it drop her off at Tesco when she started complaining"
LOL
I didn't realize how hated this episode was. I quite enjoyed this episode for it making the normal mystery sci-fi take a bit of a backseat for just a silly episode of 11 trying to fit in with his wacky personality, and his interactions with Craig. I don't take this episode seriously, cuz I don't think it was supposed to be an actual episode for doctor who, but just a silly episode.
It's generally quite liked. See the comments. Harry's opinions here are simply unusual.
Few notes
* Matt Smith is a former academy football player and using that was smart in terms of resources available.
I don't think this is a terrible episode. I find it rather enjoyable, even if it's definitely the most mediocre one of S5
The only episode of season 5 that is bad is Vampires of Venice. Every thing else is passable at the worst.
Series 5 is a mediocre Series overall especially compared to The RTD era which was phenomenal
Now you’ve called it a chameleon circuit, that makes WAY more sense
I didn't hate this episode overall, but boy did I hate the "power of love" ending. In fact I hated the entire romance plot.
This episode had a few great moments, but definitely was total filler and contains more I didn't like than liked.
For me this episode is the epitome of 4/10.
This is genuienly one of my favorite series 5 episodes.
It's a fun jaunt, I don't take it seriously - you really can't whenever Corden's showing his mug.
when you going release torchwood series 1 and sarah jane adventures series 1
You like twin peaks too? Now I want to see a "Twin Peaks season 3, did it suck?"
Another episode that I’ve only watched once all the way through.
the Lodger was going to originally have the villain from the classic episode Meglos
I heard the football scene was a reference to how Matt Smith used to be a football player before injuring his ankle. No idea if that's true
Sophie is holding herself back, not Craig, she’s in love with him and it’s up to her if she goes or not, she chooses not to

It can be described as "The first James Corden episode"
james as an actor he can do his job well as a comedian he should be outlawed
Really do suggest giving Gavin and Stacey another rewatch
I completely forgot about this episode so I thought it was the sequel episode with the Cybermen and the Baby in it when I first saw this video.
Low key an underrated episode
I personally enjoy this episode as just a fun watch if I don't really want to pay much attention. I also don't hate James Corden like most people do, so I find it more bareable in that regard.
I found this spisode entertaining, and I was liking it up until the ending. I hated that they saved the day with "the power of love". My God, I wasn't expecting much of this episode but it still managed to disappoint.
Haha! I actually really like both the Craig episodes for whatever reason. It's just a fun departure from the norm
I actually really like the head but technique for passing on knowledge
I dunno, the Doctor being good at football isn't too absurd, he's probably had a few years of playing on and off when cricket isn't in season.

Nah, I've been my upside neighbour outside and bronchitis could be fun.
"Fuck I've ran out of air"
I do like certain elements of the writing for this episode and I think Sophie is a really good character (plus I like Daisy Haggard who plays her) but I know I'd like it even better if James Corden wasn't in it. Stuff like the Doctor becoming Mr Football just seems like it's trying to pastiche Matt Smith as an individual. I'm actually a big fan of filler episodes as they allow a breather from a series narrative, but compared to the likes of Amy's Choice this pales in comparison.
You've missed the point of this episode, and seems as if you came into this with your mind made up.
He does this with all the series 5 episodes
For a second I thought this was the episode with the big guy who defeated the cybermen with the power of love. Was that a different stocky dude?
It's the same character
‘The Doctor’ was good at cricket too. 🥳
I always liked this episode and it’s more slice of life feel. I hate James Corden so much but I like both of his Doctor Who episodes and his character.
I don't even have to watch this video, of course it sucks, James Corden is involved in it.
Is he so bad?i dont know him
Oh boy the Series 5 finale is next! One of my all time favourite stories!
Oh no... please don’t be too harsh on it.
I really like Craig, he's one of my favorite characters
I love the lodger not for the good quality, but I love it bc it is just a comfort episods
The best part about this episode was the speculation on the creepy clown painting and the pseudo-tardis playing more of a role later. Such wasted potential.
re-review heaven sent
MEGA REVIEUW HERE WE GO
can't wait for pandorica opens/ big bang
One of my favourite episodes
Originally, this was going to be a sequel to the Tom Baker story Meglos.
yup, when I learnt that back when I bought DWM and Gareth Roberts revealed an extract of the script, I felt like TFS Vegeta realising TFS Broly was the legendary Super Saiyan... it sounded so goddamn cool!
How was THIS my first Doctor Who episode 🥵
This is one of the few episodes of new who I’ve not watched for years. I watched it once as a kid and not once again since then.
Also, I find it really distracting how the ship at the end looks like the silences ship in day of the moon.
I think it’s because it IS a Silence ship.
It's the same ship. The Silence have been going backward into the Doctor's timeline (see: Time of the Doctor, all of season six, the Pandorica Opens two-parter etc) to kill him & prevent him reaching Trenzalore. The fact that it is a Silence ship reinforces the reason the TARDIS is stuck in a time loop as it will soon be in a couple of episodes.
lol literally every criticism you gave this was something I enjoyed about it
This is one of my favorite episodes
Peter Kay and James Corden are decently similar in my mind. Both reasonably large men with a career in comedy and played a minor Doctor Who character the difference being despite not being particular fond of ether outside the show I hate Peter Kay's Abzorbaloff and love James Corden's every man Craig ESPECIALLY in season 6 with the Cybermen and "Stormageddon Lord Of All" and this episode (with a couple of moments as exceptions) is over a one of my favorites and nobody can change my mind on that :-)
Honestly I do like the sequel to this episode, and I like this episode too! It's gimmicky but I like it!
For all the reasons stated, I'd say 3 is about as good as it deserves. However, for casting James Corden to play James Corden (the only role he ever actually does play), I award the episode zero out of ten, and may God have mercy on its soul.
