Can’t blame the owners because you EXPECT your dog to look slightly different after a visit to the groomers. What proves that the owners are good is the fact that they noticed the behavioral differences. That means they care enough about their dog to know when it is acting different

A fresh grooming can make quite a bit of difference. I wouldn't have thought that much, except my aunt had her long haired toy dog done. Poor Bo barely looked like the same dog, it was such a hatchet job. He looked chubbier and no where near as cute w/ all his whisps cut off, and so badly. Those retrievers looked enough alike, w/ a groom, whatever subtle difference they might have thought they noticed, a fresh groom could put them in doubt. Thankfully they noticed by that night w/ all the behavior differences.

Happened to my Dad with his black lab Bart, a country dog. Dad brought home who he thought was Bart and had him for 2 days. Bart was acting weird. Crying at night, wouldn’t follow my Dad on his ATV, wouldn’t catch popcorn when my Dad threw it in the air and was pooping in the middle of the yard, Bart always went into the bush to do his business.
On the other end, the Judge found it weird when he picked up his Elwood, a town dog, from the kennel and instead of hopping into his pet crate in the back of the Infiniti he climbed up front to the passenger seat… the Judge told my Dad that for a day Elwood was constantly crying at the door to go out, which he never did before. Wasn’t until the Judge’s son came home and was playing on the floor with the dog and petting him and said, “Dad, this isn’t Elwood… looks like him but it’s not him.” The kennel phoned my Dad and asked if his dog had been behaving differently since coming home… my Dad said, “Definitely!”. They explained that they feared the dogs had been switched by accident. My Dad asked, what’s the dog’s name? And they told him. Dad yelled out “Elwood!” And the dog jumped up and started wagging his tail, lol!
My Dad and the Judge met back at the kennel where the staff couldn’t stop apologizing… the dogs met nose to nose and by all accounts were in fact identical. My Dad and the Judge had some laughs telling their stories about the weird behaviour of their respective dogs. Often told my Dad he should write a kids book about it or something 😂

There was a line up of about 3-4 almost identical orange cats, and the first one purred and responded to me nicely I thought it was my cat and almost brought him home. 😂 My cat was the last on the line up, looking thoroughly unimpressed. 😂

We had two orange cats, and both had dopplegangers in next street. Well our male cat and his doppleganger fought and once I found them on our steps-meowing as hell(so I went to look), opened the door and if one didn't dart home and other run away, I'd not be able to tell which one was ours. So similiar were they.
Our female cat took it to next level. For several months the other family had no idea they are feeding extra cat...(she ate at home too!)

And not like “oh well we only let dogs with no dangerous things on their collar to have it on” like no, I had to pry out two pieces of plastic with my hands that a tiny dog was eating and would’ve choked on. And the dogs still roughhouse and have collars on. Like 75% of dogs have no collars, and then 25% do. It’s odd. I just wish they all had collars on so it’s easier to grab them if needed. Now you just have to do it by the scruff which is harder, and definitely more dangerous if you need to haul em off to time out for misbehaving with the other dogs, and you can’t keep a grip on them. And God forbid they get into a fight, a collar is a must have for safely getting them to release their bite.

I came home from walking my kids to school and found my Maltese, Gizmo, in the neighbors yard. I yelled at him to come over, picked him up, took him inside…and found the real Gizmo.
I swear to you, these dogs were identical. Gizmo (the real one) was not amused. The fake one could not have cared less. I put the fake one in the backyard and walked to my front yard to try to figure out whose dog I had stolen. Sure enough, a lady came walking down the street, looking for her dog. I felt so disconcerted that I had so easily been convinced it was mine!

Believe it or not, this happened with my sister's dog, a black lab. Her husband mistakenly brought another dog home from their dog's daycare. Labs are another one of those famously friendly breeds, so when the daycare staff accidentally brought out the wrong dog to him - another female black lab about the same size and age - in the pickup area, she happily hopped right into the back seat. The staff member buckled her in so he didn't notice any difference from the front. He didn't realize the error until her got her home and noticed she was behaving strangely in the unfamiliar house and was wearing a different collar.😂

There was a story some years ago of a vet's office that had THREE identical black lab patients. Two in particular they kept mixing up with their owners. It was nighttime and I had just gotten home, and my cat likes to sit in a certain spot in our lawn and greet people when they walk by. I saw him sitting in his spot like normal, but it was dark and I couldn’t see him too well. I thought he had been rolling in dust or dirt though, his fur looked lighter.
I went to go pet him and say hi to him, but when he got scared and took off running, I immediately knew it wasn’t him! It turns out it was actually a grey cat and not a black cat, and as he ran away, my actual cat jumped out of the bushes and started chasing him. I guess that must have been a nice spot in the grass!
