I think the color baby pink will be huge this year, the “grunge” style will come back, and very colorful tights will be in.. maybe in the summer we will start wearing them more with shorts kinda like the 60s/70s look. Crossbody bags are the way to go imo. Actually never hopped on the shoulder bag trend and probably never will. Shoulder bags might look cute but I need my hands. I'm also forgetful af and will lose the bag if it's not literally on my body.
Here in Japan shorts in the wintertime are really trendy right now, especially black leather shorts with knee-high black boots. The funny thing is that Japanese people tend to dress more modestly than people in the U.S. so I've actually seen more girls wearing shorts in the winter than in the summer !

And I had a healthy collection of metallic shoes and bags from even before then. I feel so seen when you’re describing how you think of what will be trending 😭 literally any time i see something pop up a few times i’m like “oh that’s gonna be a thing” and i’m always right!! What’s crazier is that i made my mom keep some of my clothes from middle/high school clothes because i thought “this’ll come back” and she didn’t believe me for the longest time, but they’ve all started to trend again in these past 3 years 😂

This is exactly why I prefer your predictions to others. Fashion is so much more organic now. We don’t all follow what the runways tell us to wear. I love the shorts over tights, lace, and black and blue trends. I’m editing a video right now where I did try-ons of all of those trends, so I think you’re spot on. I adore your takes on fashion!
as a retail worker in a small town I so feel what you mean when you say, "what normal people are wearing". We get a bunch of teenagers coming in looking for very specific styles and cuts of clothes that we don't have, but we do have 'watered-down' versions of the trends. Our company orders things in tangent with trends, but makes sure that we carry more accessible versions of the trending items. Like we have Levi's 94 Baggy',s but they're not the kind of baggy that trend followers are searching for, they're a wider straight cut jean. But they're more functional than way because 1. people aren't buying just to buy the trend and 2. they still 'feel' like you're dressing 'in-style'. I think that conversation around what fashion looks like outside of not only high end runways, but also large cities and places not chronically influenced by social media is something that people don't look into. Small town fashion is a completely different world and you need to know how to market the items to the people that are usually behind the times. But like I said I like that our store doesn't carry trends to a T, it makes it more authentic and more wearable in the real world.
Love these. Underwear/shorts in the winter probably won’t be something I’ll do, though never say never. The others are classics to me. One of my favorite black/blue combos is dark blue jeans and a black cashmere turtleneck. I used to avoid mixing gray with beige, but now I love it and am seeing a little more of it. I also am liking nylon bags for winter (so practical), whether Prada or Prada-like messengers or Longchamp Le Pliage.

I studied trendwatching and we learned that there are different ways to do it, some can predict trends based on a feeling after seeing something twice, and others need to do a full research paper before they’re confinced. I think that when you feel a trend coming back, you’re just very aligned with society so you’re really just feeling society’s needs and have a skill for trend curves and for how trends evolve (for example, in the 2000’s messenger bags were popular, as were cargo pants, so they were linked back then as well, we’re seeing a lot of y2k inspiration still, so why won’t they come back in style at the same time now). I think you’re probably right about all these trends, but I think that the super short shorts might come back in style for us normal people in the summer (the regular denim version or short short biker shorts. Or maybe even combined with the lace trend). Really like your predictions!
When you mentioned bangles you brought back memories me at 9 years old wearing my bangles and shaking my hands to make my them rattle to keep my little sister from crying in the grocery store. She loved the sound they made when she was a baby.
my way of predicting trends is basically whatever I randomly decided I liked/ was cool. Love you laini cause I was just thinking about how cute some of these would be especially the bags (watching twilight) and the bangles (watching old Bollywood movies) and then the winter shorts thing (literally been getting so much shit for wearing the outfit you described to the T). I seriously think that in terms of these fashion trends, it's like a certain group of individuals have the same fashion mindset and then people debate for a couple of months whether they like it or not but ultimately decided it's cute.
When I was a fashion student in 2006, I saw a photo on Vogue of a runway model wearing a matching set outfit which has not been trendy since the 60s. I thought about how we could be going that direction again. And we did.

messenger bags are great to get second hand because they were so popular a while ago. and if you got a random brand you wouldn't look exactly the same as everyone else. they're not my style personally but i think embroidery or painting on the pockets would be so cute. or just pins if you can't/don't want to do all that

The underwear as pants won’t last very long. It’s so impractical and dysfunctional for fashion. The bloomers have a bit more leeway because they cover up more and are easier to style. That’s said, it’s the kind of trend that people know isn’t realistic, but are infatuated with anyway. That infatuation lasts for a little while as people realize how annoying it is to try to work around the inconveniences of the trend and they get tired of it, causing the pendulum to swing the other way.

i LOVE LOVE messenger bags. i use it all the time for uni and its so practical. it carries an entire ipad, headphones and still has space for other shit especially useful for commuting by metro

I think capri pants/leggings are due for a renaissance! I first saw them in Chanel’s spring 2021 collection. That collection (and Chanel in general tbh) didn’t really do much for me but it did hint that capris may be coming back soon. I have also seen capris here and there online, including the pic at 6:25!

I’ll never forget London 2009, in the dead of winter, everyone in black sheer tights and underwear as pants with a big sweater on top. With ballet flats for shoes, hair was messy, legs were cold lol. The good ole days lol.
I find that the fashion school people who predict trends just talk about things that have already in or is a niche that has been slowing gaining popularity. So I find there suck cause I already know that is gonna be popular but your trend prediction are always right and are interesting, but just what vogue says.
I agree with you 1000%, the magazines and fashion forecasters I've often found to be NOT what actually influencers and girls I follow are wearing, your intuition is 100% on point. I follow what my fashion lover Instagrammers and TH-camrs are wearing and not necessarily fashion companies, with let's be honest, staff who are older and not necessarily as real life trendy imo.
i’m a first year uni student, i just bought a messenger bag and i see so many classmates wearing them as well. they’re so practical but also super cute and customizable (i have pins and keychains on mine). love this trend and i highly recommend
i also recently looked for messenger bags (it's soo hard to find cute, more inexpensive ones for uni) and I stumbled across some by George, Gina & Lucy, the brand that was popular in the 2000s. And I ordered one on their website because they have such cute bags, I was soo surprised! They have the most beautiful colors (orange, pink, pastel etc) and their design is really unique!! Can't reccomend it enough, I think they will also have a comeback!
following the lace trend you said I think sheer clothing is also going to be a trend, like showing your bra or top underneath your sweater or your underwear underneath your skirt. And like those sweaters with the big holes like openwork knit and distressed knit. I think that's going to be really big this 2023 winter/autumn.

I just thought I’d add that bangles are usually worn by women from the India, South East Asia and Africa as part of tradition and cultural wear and is definitely very symbolic to our community! I just felt like people should know the cultural significance of them for me and many others because it makes a huge difference to us when we feel seen, recognised and respected❤
I go to school in a smallish midwestern city and messenger bags are EVERYWHERE, at least with the "trendier" girlies. The baggu duck bag is popular at the moment. I got mine during my summer job because my coworker bought one, and then my other coworker bought one because she liked mine so much... so practical and cute!

I had the same feeling about off the shoulder/boatneck! At the beginning of 2022 I was obsessed with this look Regina George was wearing in Mean girls, at the very end of the movie she wears this simple black boat neck shirt with her purple bra straps visible. I was looking for something similar for months and later the boat neck tops starting becoming trendy.
I bought the adidas samba's secondhand for 25 euro's like years ago because I thought they looked cute on you and you told us your brother said they would be a popular shoe. And look at that trend now. Always take Laini's fashion advise!
Every year, the winter is less winter-ish in my town. Or the winter is not what used to be like 5-7 years ago. There was more times with snow or rain, cloudy-windy days, etc. I guess the shorts in the winter is not as rare now, since winter is just like fall with a hot sun on the road. I remember this trend back then in 2012 in London, where I always see girl with shorts and tights but with the small boots with galaxy print.

mixing blue/black is one of those things that gets super overgeneralized and passed along with no reasoning attached. from what i've seen, the rule originated from business attire, and referred to the fact that combing black (tights, shoes, belt, etc) with a navy suit would cause the suit to look brighter in colour, which was undesirable in a business setting. same thing for tights with the reverse combo, navy tights with a black suit will look far brighter than their actual navy colour, and the average business person doesn't want bright blue legs. Or, if it's a very dark navy paired with black, the contrast will be so minimal that it'll look like you're wearing two slightly different shades of one colour, which is undesirable in a business setting where you want your image to be cohesive and put-together. basically, it's an issue of contrast, and understanding how colours impact one another. but for the average person who doesn't really care about fashion, it's easier to remember and pass on "no blue and black together" than it is to pass on "if two colours have low contrast, one of two things will happen: they'll either appear to be poorly matched versions of one colour, or one will cause the other to appear brighter than it really is" applying this rule to casual clothing, and shades of blue outside the darker/navy range is just the result of people parroting a rule without checking why it's a rule, and now everyone is out here saying you can't combine black and electric blue in a casual outfit, even though there is zero basis for that. (for the pedantic, yes, even electric blue is a fairly dark colour when grey-scaled making it a low to mid contrast colour combo, however it is no darker than any number of purples that are considered perfectly acceptable to combine with black. why? because no one is wearing a purple suit to the office, so no rule was ever created to help the average person who doesnt understand colour theory) anyways. sorry to ramble about that for so long, i'm just eternally frustrated by how many fashion rules get generalized by the assumption that everyone wants the same effect from their clothing.

I’m disappointed that I didn’t find purses I wish I still had, but I’m an idiot who got rid of (donated) lots of good leather bags, jackets and pants in the days when no one was selling those things online because there barely was anything called “online” then and internet connection was dialup on 2400 baud modems. I studied trendwatching and we learned that there are different ways to do it, some can predict trends based on a feeling after seeing something twice, and others need to do a full research paper before they’re confinced. I think that when you feel a trend coming back, you’re just very aligned with society so you’re really just feeling society’s needs and have a skill for trend curves and for how trends evolve (for example, in the 2000’s messenger bags were popular, as were cargo pants, so they were linked back then as well, we’re seeing a lot of y2k inspiration still, so why won’t they come back in style at the same time now). I think you’re probably right about all these trends, but I think that the super short shorts might come back in style for us normal people in the summer (the regular denim version or short short biker shorts. Or maybe even combined with the lace trend). Really like your predictions!

my way of predicting trends is basically whatever I randomly decided I liked/ was cool. Love you laini cause I was just thinking about how cute some of these would be especially the bags (watching twilight) and the bangles (watching old Bollywood movies) and then the winter shorts thing (literally been getting so much shit for wearing the outfit you described to the T). I seriously think that in terms of these fashion trends, it's like a certain group of individuals have the same fashion mindset and then people debate for a couple of months whether they like it or not but ultimately decided it's cute.

The underwear as pants won’t last very long. It’s so impractical and dysfunctional for fashion. The bloomers have a bit more leeway because they cover up more and are easier to style. That’s said, it’s the kind of trend that people know isn’t realistic, but are infatuated with anyway. That infatuation lasts for a little while as people realize how annoying it is to try to work around the inconveniences of the trend and they get tired of it, causing the pendulum to swing the other way.

I think capri pants/leggings are due for a renaissance! I first saw them in Chanel’s spring 2021 collection. That collection (and Chanel in general tbh) didn’t really do much for me but it did hint that capris may be coming back soon. I have also seen capris here and there online, including the pic at 6:25!

I find that the fashion school people who predict trends just talk about things that have already in or is a niche that has been slowing gaining popularity. So I find there suck cause I already know that is gonna be popular but your trend prediction are always right and are interesting, but just what vogue says.
I agree with you 1000%, the magazines and fashion forecasters I've often found to be NOT what actually influencers and girls I follow are wearing, your intuition is 100% on point. I follow what my fashion lover Instagrammers and TH-camrs are wearing and not necessarily fashion companies, with let's be honest, staff who are older and not necessarily as real life trendy imo.

i also recently looked for messenger bags (it's soo hard to find cute, more inexpensive ones for uni) and I stumbled across some by George, Gina & Lucy, the brand that was popular in the 2000s. And I ordered one on their website because they have such cute bags, I was soo surprised! They have the most beautiful colors (orange, pink, pastel etc) and their design is really unique!! Can't reccomend it enough, I think they will also have a comeback!

I just thought I’d add that bangles are usually worn by women from the India, South East Asia and Africa as part of tradition and cultural wear and is definitely very symbolic to our community! I just felt like people should know the cultural significance of them for me and many others because it makes a huge difference to us when we feel seen, recognised and respected❤
I go to school in a smallish midwestern city and messenger bags are EVERYWHERE, at least with the "trendier" girlies. The baggu duck bag is popular at the moment. I got mine during my summer job because my coworker bought one, and then my other coworker bought one because she liked mine so much... so practical and cute!
a lot of these trends aren't for me, but I am definitely excited by the lace/bow trend coming through because 1) it's so accessible 2) you can get really creative with both items 3) I'm a gal who has learned I feel so much more confident in more oversized clothing paired with more feminine things, so the idea of cargo pants + tube top + hair ribbons is giving me everything I need in 2023!!

At the beginning of 2022 I was obsessed with this look Regina George was wearing in Mean girls, at the very end of the movie she wears this simple black boat neck shirt with her purple bra straps visible. I was looking for something similar for months and later the boat neck tops starting becoming trendy.
I bought the adidas samba's secondhand for 25 euro's like years ago because I thought they looked cute on you and you told us your brother said they would be a popular shoe. And look at that trend now. Always take Laini's fashion advise!
Every year, the winter is less winter-ish in my town. Or the winter is not what used to be like 5-7 years ago. There was more times with snow or rain, cloudy-windy days, etc. I guess the shorts in the winter is not as rare now, since winter is just like fall with a hot sun on the road. I remember this trend back then in 2012 in London, where I always see girl with shorts and tights but with the small boots with galaxy print.

mixing blue/black is one of those things that gets super overgeneralized and passed along with no reasoning attached. from what i've seen, the rule originated from business attire, and referred to the fact that combing black (tights, shoes, belt, etc) with a navy suit would cause the suit to look brighter in colour, which was undesirable in a business setting. same thing for tights with the reverse combo, navy tights with a black suit will look far brighter than their actual navy colour, and the average business person doesn't want bright blue legs. Or, if it's a very dark navy paired with black, the contrast will be so minimal that it'll look like you're wearing two slightly different shades of one colour, which is undesirable in a business setting where you want your image to be cohesive and put-together.
basically, it's an issue of contrast, and understanding how colours impact one another. but for the average person who doesn't really care about fashion, it's easier to remember and pass on "no blue and black together" than it is to pass on "if two colours have low contrast, one of two things will happen: they'll either appear to be poorly matched versions of one colour, or one will cause the other to appear brighter than it really is" applying this rule to casual clothing, and shades of blue outside the darker/navy range is just the result of people parroting a rule without checking why it's a rule, and now everyone is out here saying you can't combine black and electric blue in a casual outfit, even though there is zero basis for that.
(for the pedantic, yes, even electric blue is a fairly dark colour when grey-scaled making it a low to mid contrast colour combo, however it is no darker than any number of purples that are considered perfectly acceptable to combine with black. why? because no one is wearing a purple suit to the office, so no rule was ever created to help the average person who doesnt understand colour theory)
anyways. sorry to ramble about that for so long, i'm just eternally frustrated by how many fashion rules get generalized by the assumption that everyone wants the same effect from their clothing.
