I was a manager for GameStop during the height of the Wii shovelware era, and I can't even begin to guess how many copies of each of these games we had (except for the Majestic March one, I'd never heard of that before now). This junk plus licensed titles from Disney and Nickelodeon were the bulk of our Wii inventory at any given time. This crap routinely traded in for like $1 apiece and people did it because they hated these games so badly.

Sneak King was a competently made game that was built on a premise that's only funny for about 5 minutes. But the BK Pocket Bike Racer game? That was actually a really good racing game. The worst thing about shovelware is that there are people who will unironically defend it as their favorites games as kids, for whatever reason that might be.

I like the Wii U to be honest. It reminds me of the Dreamcast - interesting but underutilised gimmicks, powerhouse 1st party titles and niche but strong titles like Wonderful 101.

on Petz: fun fact, Petz Catz and Petz Dogz (Catz 2 and Dogz 2 in some regions for some ungodly reason) on the Wii, which most of the Petz footage you had is from, were not meant to be part of the Petz franchise and are not Petz games by any definition. I am 99% certain that all the Petz games are a bunch of unrelated titles all localized under one name for no good reason, and these two adventure games were mistakenly lumped in.
I was thinking that too. Like, they say all the Petz games are the same, but use footage from literally the only one that's not the same (and would give them more than enough to talk about on its own bizarre merits).

Petz Cats 2 was one of my favorite games when I was little haha. That one wasn't pet simulation, it was a story game where you play as a cat. It wasn't an amazing game, but my nostalgia for the game is too strong haha

Petz Catz 2 was my first video game (aside from a bunch of v-smile games), though I owned it for the PS2 rather than the Wii I still remember many occasions of playing it for a while, getting frustrated when my dumb child brain couldn't figure out what to do since I never read the dialogue, then switching to playing lego star wars XD

The Dogz game for the Wii was completely different from regular pets games! It was an adventure game copy of the Dog Island, but when I was 12 I loved it.

Okay, I'll defend the Petz games. Well, a few of them. The series is actually quite varied, with some of the games being standard Nintendogs ripoffs while some of them are essentially minigame compilations. Some of them you play as the animals, and others you act as their caretaker. Pets Dogz 2, the game shown in the majority of clips in the video, isn't actually a pet simulation game. Rather, it's more of an exploration/action RPG and probably the best in the series. I remember getting this game when I was about 8. When my mom was looking at reviews online, there were a bunch of angry parents saying NOT to buy it because they just thought it was a standard pet dress up simulator. The game actually does require some amount of skill/reasoning, and if you handed this to a 5 year old they would be hopelessly lost (and sad that they couldn't afford clothes because their dog kept getting killed by snakes). There are tons of enemies scattered throughout the world, and they WILL kill you. Death means losing half of your money (which is used to buy things like healing items), so it does have consequences. You can 'stun' enemies by barking/throwing rocks at them, but exploration and collection is the main focus rather than combat. Like animal crossing, there are entire libraries full of fish, plants, animals, and butterflies to collect. There are enemy and environment-based status effects, and the game has a wide array of areas to explore (beach, caves, gorge, volcano, arctic, etc) The game has a story (albeit a rather cheesy one) which involves an evil wolf stealing a magic hat and bringing destruction to the world. There IS a final boss fight, which was quite challenging as a kid. The characters are charming, and the only minigames are fishing and bug catching. Maybe I'm just viewing the game through the rose-tinted glasses of childhood nostalgia, but this game was the Petz series at its best. Which is honestly not that bad, all things considered. You can tell a lot of heart was put into the game, which isn't true for the other entries on this list or later installments in the series.
I only played a few of them, but Petz Dogz Talent Show kinda sucked. It was minigame-focused, and didn't have a whole lot of options for actually caring for the pet. I'm sure there are other stinkers, but that's the only one I had personal experience with.
Okay, so this is going to sound really nitpicky but for the Number 5 segment most of the footage used is from the console version of Petz Dogs 2. Here's the thing: that game, as well as it's cat counterpart, are actually adventure games not simulators. They're strangely pretty decent and include an over-world with 14 major locations (15 if you count both halves of Pawville), an actual story, side quests, collectibles, full customization of not just the player but all the main town npcs, and a few mini-games worked into the zoo animal rescue side quest. The controls work well and there is some interesting mechanics such as literally digging for items, the way enemies are programmed to fall asleep at night/day (depending on the species), or the hot vs cold mechanic used in Inferno Cave/Polar Fields where you have to bathe in water pockets/hot springs to prevent dying from overheating/hypothermia. And yes, you can actually die, which results in not only going back to the last save point but losing half your money. The music's pretty good, too. Really, the game's only sin is a lack of a proper ending and the two versions being the same outside of the species of the player and NPCs. To be fair, the rest of the series really are just mediocre simulation games. It's just the video doesn't match and as someone who knows the game being shown it's a bit bothersome.

The petz games for windows were much better, my favorite being, catz 5/dogz 5. Even had a modding scene. Fun fact: facade (yes, the "dramatic" experimental game about a couple close to divorce) uses the same rendering technique as a pet simulator. The dogs and cats in the early 2000s petz pc games and the couple in facade are rendered entirely with shaderless spheres rather than polygons. I believe sprites positioned in 3d space rather than 3d spheres.
NO LIE: one day I was at a friend's house and she had a used copy of Chicken Shoot in her Wii and I immediately noticed a) it was preowned and bought from GameStop and b) I IMMEDIATELY thought it looked like absolute GARBAGE.

Wii is the console that aged badly, the shovelware of the Wii was so awful that it hurt the console. Even those shovelware games have been donated to thrift stores for super cheap that nobody wants them.
I remember playing the Bratz game for the Wii when I was younger, I don't know if my age played along with this, but I couldn't figure out how to play it. You just walked around blindly looking for stores to go into to complete the game. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't on this list. 😕😕

Sorry to tell you, but Dogz and Catz on the Wii aren't part of the Petz series, they were originally games by the Japanese software house Yuke's titled Wanko/Nyanko to mahou no boushi and are totally different from Ubisoft's Petz games, they're actually good games, not outstanding but there's clearly effort put in into the gameplay mechanics, story and especially music, unlike most of the games on the lists, and there's also more skill and strategy required to complete the game over most of the bland kids shovelware here, and I HIGHLY doubt that Dogz/Catz are worse than the M&M's racing game. Ubisoft just rebranded the game as part of their Petz series for easier recognization in the west, replacing the original anime styled boxarts as well with their usual stock pictures of animals and even marketing it as a pet simulation game when it's more an open world RPG game with some stealth elements, as a fan of Catz/Dogz and The Dog Island, Ubisoft rebranding the first two really made a lot of people turn away from two games that are overall valid despite being kids games, I'd say there's more effort in them than some recent Nintendo games like Kirby Star Allies, it may be an odd comparison, but Dogz and Catz actually provide a lenghty and some sort of strategy instead of being a lazy, overly easy over priced 2D game that gets away with that because it's Kirby, yes, I said that game seriously had more genuine effort than a Kirby game and I say it as a Kirby fanatic myself, I could say the same for Return to Dream Land, which would be more fair since it's a Wii game, but Return to Dream Land despite being a 2D platformer like Star Allies is actually fun and has double the worlds than Star Allies, besides the fact I recall it being much cheaper even at launch.
I'd actually would have preferred if the criticism for these games were actually based on what the games really have to offer and each game's actual reviews and criticism, and actually, not play them, but at least see their content, I mean, you clearly searched for footage of Dogz and Catz after all, I can clearly see from the footage they're quests based games, instead of categorizing all of them as the same thing and think all of them are bad because that's what the series' overall opinion is by the critics' reviews of a lot of the games in the series, like the DS games or Wii's Horsez, for some people I may sound like overreacting, but TH-camrs need criticism anyway, and they should make better researches next time instead of making a video about a game and know nothing about a game they clearly looked video footage off of TH-cam, and I already know some triggered Kirby fans are raging for saying two of these actually provide a better experience than a Kirby game, that's probably why I don't want to interact with the Kirby fandom, they're way over protective of an average franchise and say how superior it is to CoD when Kirby is also pretty repetitive as well, I can even say the vast majority of Kirby games are mediocre, anyway, I really can't say they provide challenge for the most skilled hardcore gamer, but for a kids' game, they still provide more than the average Kirby game, I can say they're actually respectful of their target demographic, especially The Dog Island, which actually made you care for the characters and had themes like life and death, I don't care what the average Kirby fan says but the Kirby lore is not deep and barely makes you care for its characters. By the way, I'm almost 21 years old, I don't really care if liking a game with puppies that suffered of bad marketing in the west makes me look like a 12 year old (especially with 30 year old virgins on the internet saying Kirby lore is deep)
Thank you for explaining this here! It was one of my favorite games as a kid. The english version was rebranded as petz dogz/catz 2 for the wii/ps2. but geniunely had a plot. Its more comparable to 'the dog island!' It had a plot and even a final boss. I don't remember a lot but there were a lot of games. Petz games aren't all by ubisoft and people don't understand or know. I believe petz dogz/catz 2 (wii/ps2) is a very enjoyable game for a kid as it is a story and you get to play as a dog... or a cat. To anyone whos interested I suggest looking for gameplay, however i don't believe theres any high quality which is a shame because its actually pretty decent (i havent played it in years so i can't really give any good critism...) but... definitely not comparable to the ds version! They used the wii game's footage even... its very unresearched to add it without mentioning that its not the same as the ds version... definitely shouldnt be on the list.
I have Catz on the GBA and I think the designs and behaviors of the kittens seem somewhat realistic. The gameplay is repetitive, but you can get different endings depending on which stats you raise.

I like the Wii U to be honest. It reminds me of the Dreamcast - interesting but underutilised gimmicks, powerhouse 1st party titles and niche but strong titles like Wonderful 101.

on Petz: fun fact, Petz Catz and Petz Dogz (Catz 2 and Dogz 2 in some regions for some ungodly reason) on the Wii, which most of the Petz footage you had is from, were not meant to be part of the Petz franchise and are not Petz games by any definition. I am 99% certain that all the Petz games are a bunch of unrelated titles all localized under one name for no good reason, and these two adventure games were mistakenly lumped in.
I was thinking that too. Like, they say all the Petz games are the same, but use footage from literally the only one that's not the same (and would give them more than enough to talk about on its own bizarre merits).

Petz Cats 2 was one of my favorite games when I was little haha. That one wasn't pet simulation, it was a story game where you play as a cat. It wasn't an amazing game, but my nostalgia for the game is too strong haha

Petz Catz 2 was my first video game (aside from a bunch of v-smile games), though I owned it for the PS2 rather than the Wii

The Dogz game for the Wii was completely different from regular pets games! It was an adventure game copy of the Dog Island, but when I was 12 I loved it.

I would pay all of my life savings to play that game, no matter how trashy. I am a gamer, and that means to play games when they come out. Do i have to like them? No. But i will still force myself to enjoy the game if i hate it
Okay, I'll defend the Petz games. Well, a few of them. The series is actually quite varied, with some of the games being standard Nintendogs ripoffs while some of them are essentially minigame compilations. Some of them you play as the animals, and others you act as their caretaker. Pets Dogz 2, the game shown in the majority of clips in the video, isn't actually a pet simulation game. Rather, it's more of an exploration/action RPG and probably the best in the series. I remember getting this game when I was about 8. When my mom was looking at reviews online, there were a bunch of angry parents saying NOT to buy it because they just thought it was a standard pet dress up simulator. The game actually does require some amount of skill/reasoning, and if you handed this to a 5 year old they would be hopelessly lost (and sad that they couldn't afford clothes because their dog kept getting killed by snakes). There are tons of enemies scattered throughout the world, and they WILL kill you. Death means losing half of your money (which is used to buy things like healing items), so it does have consequences. You can 'stun' enemies by barking/throwing rocks at them, but exploration and collection is the main focus rather than combat. Like animal crossing, there are entire libraries full of fish, plants, animals, and butterflies to collect. There are enemy and environment-based status effects, and the game has a wide array of areas to explore (beach, caves, gorge, volcano, arctic, etc) The game has a story (albeit a rather cheesy one) which involves an evil wolf stealing a magic hat and bringing destruction to the world. There IS a final boss fight, which was quite challenging as a kid. The characters are charming, and the only minigames are fishing and bug catching. Maybe I'm just viewing the game through the rose-tinted glasses of childhood nostalgia, but this game was the Petz series at its best. Which is honestly not that bad, all things considered. You can tell a lot of heart was put into the game, which isn't true for the other entries on this list or later installments in the series.
If it works it works. That's why there is a lot. Look at Call of Duty. Essentially the same game, just changing cosmetics. Then Zombies then Aliens.

I only played a few of them, but Petz Dogz Talent Show kinda sucked. It was minigame-focused, and didn't have a whole lot of options for actually caring for the pet. I'm sure there are other stinkers, but that's the only one I had personal experience with.

Okay, so this is going to sound really nitpicky but for the Number 5 segment most of the footage used is from the console version of Petz Dogs 2. Here's the thing: that game, as well as it's cat counterpart, are actually adventure games not simulators. They're strangely pretty decent and include an over-world with 14 major locations (15 if you count both halves of Pawville), an actual story, side quests, collectibles, full customization of not just the player but all the main town npcs, and a few mini-games worked into the zoo animal rescue side quest. The controls work well and there is some interesting mechanics such as literally digging for items, the way enemies are programmed to fall asleep at night/day (depending on the species), or the hot vs cold mechanic used in Inferno Cave/Polar Fields where you have to bathe in water pockets/hot springs to prevent dying from overheating/hypothermia. And yes, you can actually die, which results in not only going back to the last save point but losing half your money. The music's pretty good, too. Really, the game's only sin is a lack of a proper ending and the two versions being the same outside of the species of the player and NPCs.
To be fair, the rest of the series really are just mediocre simulation games. It's just the video doesn't match and as someone who knows the game being shown it's a bit bothersome.

The petz games for windows were much better, my favorite being, catz 5/dogz 5. Even had a modding scene. Fun fact: facade (yes, the "dramatic" experimental game about a couple close to divorce) uses the same rendering technique as a pet simulator. The dogs and cats in the early 2000s petz pc games and the couple in facade are rendered entirely with shaderless spheres rather than polygons. I believe sprites positioned in 3d space rather than 3d spheres.

Wii is the console that aged badly, the shovelware of the Wii was so awful that it hurt the console. Even those shovelware games have been donated to thrift stores for super cheap that nobody wants them.

Sorry to tell you, but Dogz and Catz on the Wii aren't part of the Petz series, they were originally games by the Japanese software house Yuke's titled Wanko/Nyanko to mahou no boushi and are totally different from Ubisoft's Petz games, they're actually good games, not outstanding but there's clearly effort put in into the gameplay mechanics, story and especially music, unlike most of the games on the lists, and there's also more skill and strategy required to complete the game over most of the bland kids shovelware here, and I HIGHLY doubt that Dogz/Catz are worse than the M&M's racing game.
Ubisoft just rebranded the game as part of their Petz series for easier recognization in the west, replacing the original anime styled boxarts as well with their usual stock pictures of animals and even marketing it as a pet simulation game when it's more an open world RPG game with some stealth elements, as a fan of Catz/Dogz and The Dog Island, Ubisoft rebranding the first two really made a lot of people turn away from two games that are overall valid despite being kids games, I'd say there's more effort in them than some recent Nintendo games like Kirby Star Allies, it may be an odd comparison, but Dogz and Catz actually provide a lenghty and some sort of strategy instead of being a lazy, overly easy over priced 2D game that gets away with that because it's Kirby, yes, I said that game seriously had more genuine effort than a Kirby game and I say it as a Kirby fanatic myself, I could say the same for Return to Dream Land, which would be more fair since it's a Wii game, but Return to Dream Land despite being a 2D platformer like Star Allies is actually fun and has double the worlds than Star Allies, besides the fact I recall it being much cheaper even at launch.
I'd actually would have preferred if the criticism for these games were actually based on what the games really have to offer and each game's actual reviews and criticism, and actually, not play them, but at least see their content, I mean, you clearly searched for footage of Dogz and Catz after all, I can clearly see from the footage they're quests based games, instead of categorizing all of them as the same thing and think all of them are bad because that's what the series' overall opinion is by the critics' reviews of a lot of the games in the series, like the DS games or Wii's Horsez, for some people I may sound like overreacting, but TH-camrs need criticism anyway, and they should make better researches next time instead of making a video about a game and know nothing about a game they clearly looked video footage off of TH-cam, and I already know some triggered Kirby fans are raging for saying two of these actually provide a better experience than a Kirby game, that's probably why I don't want to interact with the Kirby fandom, they're way over protective of an average franchise and say how superior it is to CoD when Kirby is also pretty repetitive as well, I can even say the vast majority of Kirby games are mediocre, anyway, I really can't say they provide challenge for the most skilled hardcore gamer, but for a kids' game, they still provide more than the average Kirby game, I can say they're actually respectful of their target demographic, especially The Dog Island, which actually made you care for the characters and had themes like life and death, I don't care what the average Kirby fan says but the Kirby lore is not deep and barely makes you care for its characters.
By the way, I'm almost 21 years old, I don't really care if liking a game with puppies that suffered of bad marketing in the west makes me look like a 12 year old (especially with 30 year old virgins on the internet saying Kirby lore is deep)

Thank you for explaining this here! It was one of my favorite games as a kid. The english version was rebranded as petz dogz/catz 2 for the wii/ps2. but geniunely had a plot. Its more comparable to 'the dog island!' It had a plot and even a final boss. I don't remember a lot but there were a lot of games. Petz games aren't all by ubisoft and people don't understand or know. I believe petz dogz/catz 2 (wii/ps2) is a very enjoyable game for a kid as it is a story and you get to play as a dog... or a cat. To anyone whos interested I suggest looking for gameplay, however i don't believe theres any high quality which is a shame because its actually pretty decent (i havent played it in years so i can't really give any good critism...) but... definitely not comparable to the ds version! They used the wii game's footage even... its very unresearched to add it without mentioning that its not the same as the ds version... definitely shouldnt be on the list.
I have Catz on the GBA and I think the designs and behaviors of the kittens seem somewhat realistic. The gameplay is repetitive, but you can get different endings depending on which stats you raise.
