If you go 500 then used parts are practically required. Certain things I'd exclude would be used drives and used coolers, only because I've tried coolers a couple of times and unfortunately they were always missing a bit I needed

Feel like $600-700 would be a far more realistic budget in this market. In this market, just getting a GPU and a decent CPU almost entirely eats up your $500, and increasing PSU+case prices don't help.

I know it's usually 'taboo' to pair a "K" chip with a non "Z" board, however, you specifically replied to his question @ 4:18 that you "Don't care to overclock." Since you expressly said this, the overclocking features of the "Z" board become superfluous. For that reason, a cheaper "B" board could be consider appropriate. The 12600 non-K is a lesser chip than the 12600K as it lacks E-cores. Not to mention, the 12600 non-K is *more* expensive on Newegg right now. I think you dinged the first list too harshly in view of these.

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

E cores don't change much in the way of FPS at all from what I've seen. It's simply the idea of pairing a K SKU with a B chipset. We all know the non-K will be the cheaper option. Can't speak to what crazy 3rd party retailers are asking for their samples. I like the idea of B660 + 12600, but if his intention was as you described, he probably should have explained it a bit. A first-time builder may assume he/she will still be able to overclock. I'm aware not everyone will agree with this, but I generally stand by my statements in the video. Whether it's BCLK OC or just running a K SKU for the extra (mostly pointless) e-cores for gaming, he should have clarified the approach - because it's certainly unconventional and not something I'd personally recommend.

I tried to get family in cities to pick me up cards when they come in stock, but its so hard to time it, as they sell out so quick. Closest computer store that sells GPUS is 3 hours away. I made a list for $1505 (after $40 of rebates) with a 5600x+x570 WiFi Auros Elite (cheaper than the non-WiFi) along with a 512GB NVMe boot drive and a 2TB mechanical.
    List is - FGF9W4 👍
The 3 front fans from the case can be moved to top and back then the 280mm AIO would go upfront so that would have excellent cooling capability.
I know the FPS wouldn't be as good as the Intel system but the 5600x isn't that far behind and you already know that going above 1080p almost eliminates any advantage the Intel CPUs have anyway as it becomes a more GPU bound system.

As for the 12600 vs the 12600k. Others have mentioned that there is a difference with how many and what type of core they have but I want to bring up availability and pricing. The only place I could find with 12600 in stock is Newegg and its priced at $328.99 (this is on 02-23-2022). The 12600k on Newegg is priced at $279.94 (again 02-23-2022) and other sites had it at the same or similar price. I don't think they picked the 12600k because its a k version. I think they picked it because that's whats available.

I would say currently intel is better for lower end builds. Unless you are willing to go to older 2000 or 3000 series cpu. I would say upgrade if you are like me I went from 1700x to 5900x. Worth every penny and now I am waiting for 4000 series gpu at least I am happy still playing all triple A games at 1440p with gtx 1080. FSR is the reason for this and makes gaming worth it on pc now. If you don't have small upgrade paths or money to upgrade than buy a console. I don't recommend a pc unless you are going to use it for multiple things. That is coming from a pc gamer. Buy xbox one with game pass or ps5 while buying ps4 games on the cheap and only buying ps5 games you can afford or really want. It's just world we live in now that entertainment is expensive and people are stuck at home. Just working with nothing else to do so what else does the money go towards. So save your money if this is what you really want. If the rumors are to be true a gpu releases in september or october are going to be game changing. CPU always get better, but unless you feel like jumping on ddr5 bandwagon I would recommend just buying lower end gpu and getting best cpu/ram you can.

What Ryzen? 12600k is better even than the 5800x, and 5600x is more expensive. Ryzen is dead since Alderlake launched. The only Ryzen that could be good is the 5900x if you get it for the same price as the 12700k because the motherboards are cheaper. The rest don't matter, they are expensive and slow. Also, 2nd list total is 1680 $ so that's 180 $ over budget (990 $ + 690 $ the graphics card). Do you still it's the best now?

  • @RaimaNd

I absolutely understand why people chose i5 12600k because they're very good in terms of price vs performance. i7's are just way more expensive and barely better especially when not using more cores/threads.

I don't know if this was the case earlier in the month but when I was pricing CPUs for my daughter yesterday, the K SKU was cheaper than the non-K SKU with the 12600 on Amazon. That could be why he went with that one. The price difference was around $20-$30, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, this may have been the case. In hindsight, I wish he's elaborated a bit on that when he sent the list. The 12600 being more expensive than the K counterpart is certainly not normal and not likely to last long.

5:25 Maybe I'm being stupid but didn't he asked you whether you wanted to overclock and you said no??? So if you aren't an enthusiast and aren't planning to overclock at all, then a B660 is a decent choice. I'm not sure I would recommend it but it's definitely a way to decrease price
EDIT: Ah I understand, you were thinking: "With a B660 might as well go with a 12600f" or something like that. That's actually not a good idea, cause the non K version of the 12600k does not have e cores. it's just a 6 core CPU

These days i don't even consider HDD's for PC builds, unless you need 2 TB or above. Seeing 1 TB NVMe and SATA SSD's in the 80€ range, i wouldn't downgrade from NVMe to a mechanical drive to save 40 bucks. But 2 TB SSD's are still kinda pricey and 2 TB HDD's are not, so if you need high capacity, i'd understand HDD over SSD, though.

Here's my AMD Build for you Greg, 5800X = 12600K but the 12600K is $100 cheaper however it roughly works out the same when you factor in the cheaper AM4 motherboards, the board I have chosen has a good VRM and VRM heatsink, bios flashback to update the bios, has four ram slots filled to 32GB total, the 6600XT is possibly the best value per FPS at the moment.
The case is a P300A for good airflow, the cooler is a Arctic Freezer Duo which punches above its weight and is good value, the PSU is a 650w Gold rated EVGA unit with modular cables and finally the boot drive is a 1tb Crucial P5 which is TLC NAND and has high Pcie 3.0 speeds.
    Ryzen 5800X $350
    Arctic Freezer 34 Duo $51.30
Asus TUF Gaming B450-PLUS II ATX AM4 $115

Asus Radeon RX 6600 XT 8 GB DUAL OC $519.98

On the money with the processor assessment. The 12600k is not competing with the 5600x. The fact that those have been so similarly priced is appaling.

On intel's spec sheet for the i5-12600k, it says under memory specifications that it supports up to DDR4-3200 and up to 2 channels. Wouldn't this mean that buying a RAM kit that is DDR4-3600 would be a waste? Also, that motherboard comes with 4 DIMM slots, but the CPU only supports up to 2 channels. So, in order to take advantage of those 2 extra slots, wouldn't you have to replace the CPU?

It really is crazy some of the pricing I'm seeing over there. Thought i'd have a look at what an equivalent cost one here in Aus looks like. $1500 US comes to around $2250-$2300 AUD after GST included here (all parts include GST in price). For that, you can easily get a system like those shown but with a 3060ti/6700xt instead. Means you can build a 1440p system in aus but really only a 1080p system in US for the same cost.
