You are an excellent craftsman! This video was definitely impressive. Maple is extremely difficult to carve in. I’ve done some ball & claw table legs started out with maple blanks but decided to go to Mahogany after becoming frustrated with maple. My hats off to you and your shape chisels.
Thanks Kim. You're right, maple is pretty tough going. I made another pair out of walnut years before the maple and the walnut was much easier to carve. Mahogany is a good choice too.
Great work and thanks for sharing, now that is what I call a ball and claw foot. I have seen some furniture makers attempt this and surely not all are equal. There are subtleties that many people often miss. I personally like the realistic style myself and I tend to strive for it in my work. God bless.
@@projectmerlin I actually slowed the vid down a bit and became transfixed watching a good portion of it that way. Very enjoyable to be given the opportunity to watch a skilled craftsman close up. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Arnulfo. I'm glad you enjoyed watching the video. It's a good time to do a bit of woodworking while all this Covid stuff is going on in our world.

That is correct, Bill, but you will never find a video on “carving a claw grasping a pearl of wisdom.” In the woodworking world this is called a “ball and claw” foot

Thanks Doug. Very much appreciated. The realistic style is definitely the way to go.
Some seriously excellent work here. I watched the entire video and was amazing the whole way through.
Thanks. I wish I speeded the video up faster here and there.

Very nice Paul! How long did it take in real time?
WOW That was really some HARD work there! Thanks for making me want to try it. How many different chicels did you use?
Bill Howard Thanks Bill. Give it a go - you'll be just fine. I used 25, 12 & 6mm firmers, 4mm bevelled (home made tiny chisel), 18mm spoon and 6mm V.
Thanks Chop. One whole leg including the scrolled brackets took approximately 20 hours.
...whistles.... wow, Paul that is a labor of love and craft!!
What wood is that 👍👍??
Rock Maple. 🖕
It’s a dragons claw grasping a pearl of wisdom ( not a ball ).
Thanks Bill. I didn't know that, and I like it. Cheers.
