I think maybe not quite 50 pounds, that guy has a lot of muscle hidden under there. Also, I'm not sure that "overweight" is the right word, and people like him are not quite as rare as you might think. While Roy Nelson is probably a bit more of an extreme case than usual, a friend of mine who is a nutritionist was telling me that something like 15-20% of people are just naturally a bit more on the fat side, able to be healthy and do regular exercise without losing weight. For people like this, it may be possible to become lean, but probably not necessary, and also extremely difficult for them. The reason we don't often see it in MMA is because it gives you a bit of a disadvantage when everyone you fight is in the same weight class, and probably weighs about the same, but of course it's not the same at heavyweight, where most guys are nowhere near the maximum size, which is somewhere around 290 pounds (which can cut down to weigh-in at 265). However, you see subtler examples of this at other weight classes, with those guys who are in great shape but never seem to lose that small layer of fat which softens out their muscle definition and makes them look less scary, but it doesn't mean that they aren't in any worse condition than the guys with amazing muscle definition, though I think those guys tend to struggle a bit more with weight management.

I think people underestimate "The power of the belly." as Roy would put it. Butterbean and Roy use that weight to employ the devastating power it weilds. One is when they throw a punch it comes from a much firmer base since heavier objects tend to not move as easily upon contact with lighter objects, but the biggest advantage while throwing a punch while fat is the translation of the belly's weight in a swinging motion to the target in which it's total inertia is displaced, adding to the normal torque with the hips and follow through the fist completely decimates opponents upon contact.

I think Struve fought too many tough guys too early in his career. He needed to develop better striking defense more before going up against some of these guys. Unfortunately, I think he had too much success too quickly, relying too heavily on his size and reach. I think he could have been a lot better. That being said, it can be incredibly hard to find decent sparring partners, or even people to wrestle against, when you're that big. He always did seem to be a little lacking in the aggression department as well, maybe he just also didn't have the right mind for the sport, and only got into it because people told him that his size would give him a huge advantage.

Hell yeah roy Nelson KO’d Stefan Struve... it was at UFC Fight Night 21 I believe. He Nelson friggen DESTROYED Struve’s dome piece!! That was back in 2010 I believe.
roy nelson is the best argument for the average guy training hard when he can and living his life. A natural middleweight sleeping heavyweights is why a part time practitioner like me is confident I can handle myself in a barfight
Thats actually a good question...Does anyone know the answer? If Roy Nelson trains everyday or as often as he does...boxing, cardio, jujitsu, etc. Why doesnt he loose weight?
qwe qwen cheeseburgers. Seriously he actually saysbit himself. You got to keep the calories down. I did the same thing when I trained two a days back in the early 90s. I was a beast but could eat 4000 calories a day. It is jard not to eat when you are burning so many calories you want food so bad it is tough
Food, just food, lots of athlete think that they can outwork (output ) more than their diet ( intake ). Just not true. Diet is a VERY big part and if you like heavy foods and a lot of them losing weight can still be very difficult even with tremendous amounts of work being put in.
I remember seeing Roy in the ring when he first arrived...I always wondered just how bad he could be if he dropped to that middleweight to might heavyweight range, too. That 185 - 205 range. With how he moves at his current size, along with the power he has...he would be knocking people over the damn cage like you could in that old Nintendo game ring King...lol. I have heard a few folks mention that to him over the years, and he had ZERO interest in changing....which I respect, too...just fun to think about some what ifs in sports.
He is afraid he will loose power with the drop. Saw an interview a year or so ago where it was mentioned to him and he responded with well people like seeing me knock guys out so no weight drop for me
Roy Nelson is NOT 50 lbs overweight. He's barely 30 lbs overweight. That's a barrel chest dude with huge power. he's at most, carrying 25 lbs of extra weight. Look at the chest, shoulders, back, and arms. Nelson is not meant to be a middle weight. He would look like a chemo patient if he was 185 and would be drained and low energy. Speaking from Experience as a 6'2" 260 indivual built the same, who has been down to 195 lbs in my adult life. Same reason why guys like Scott Norton were the strongest dudes in wrestling, but looked fat. Norton had a big gut but he still had abs.

Great topic.... ives always wondered but i got more questions than answers
Bas Rutten is funnier than 95% of the comedians all around the world. That includes Joe Rogan, unfortunately.
Bas Rutten is a true top level guy in general
Joe is barely considered funny
Hutch back from the bottom? XD
Like a lumbar pad? XD
LOL
LOL ‘we can make dat’
@@ItsOnlyNiall that shit was honestly kind of scary, Bas Rutten's brain runs on pure violence
I have a friend that used to fight back during the time Tank Abbot was fighting and he told me that it was common knowledge amongst everyone within that group of people that Tank and his corner men would pump each other up before and after the fight and I’m not talking about their muscles. I heard that the guys really loved when Tank took out his dentures.
"Don't get high on your own supply " 😂😂😂😂
Butterbean is an amazing fighter and people dont give him enough credit
Tank Abbott gets used by King of the Cage for promotional purposes now and he uses them to try and peddle his books to more people.
“Don’t get high on your own supply” LOL
Hearing that butter bean had the best health out of all boxers i can only imagine being the guy who read that and had to say he was being serious
How many times did Roy Nelson fight Mark hunt? And what were results?
Joe "Just want to look good" Rogan
BEING IN SHAPE IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST.
Big country will always be a legend for keeping it real for all big guys in the game
Gotta love Bas
Hell yeah roy Nelson KO’d Stefan Struve... it was at UFC Fight Night 21 I believe. He Nelson friggen DESTROYED Struve’s dome piece!! That was back in 2010 I believe.
everyone busts Struve's some piece. It's a heavyweight rite of passage.
Rogan Ruten, DC Khabib, Hall Shaw.... these are most hilarious talk show duos out there 🙂
Imagine Roy Nelson vs Butterbean both in their primes in a 5 round MMA fight.
Tank Abbot just had liver transplant surgery
.32 is that from ripping rails ?
From lumbar pad to lumber jack without breaking stride, I love it!
roy nelson is the best argument for the average guy training hard when he can and living his life.
Saw an interview a year or so ago where it was mentioned to him and he responded with well people like seeing me knock guys out so no weight drop for me
Butter bean cooking ribs is hilarious to say and also to picture.
Bas Rutten is a very engaging guy. Funny as heck too
Only Bas would think to knock the dudes implant to a different place in his body! Lmao “I’d make him like a hunchback!” What a maniac!
He's 50 lbs overweight...
I used to dig watching Scott norton wrestle he always got to win
@@malchir4036 yes, clearly... This guy is in denial lol
@@jamesg4987 Neither of you understand. It's okay.
@@malchir4036 no. you're just ignorant of biology.
“Don’t get high on your own supply”.., good one Bas! Quick thinking on your feet, well on your seat 😂
These 3 guys fucking rock. Butterbean is an Icon. Big Country is BIG COUNTRY. Thought he would crush people at either 93kgs or 84kgs. As for Tank Abbott, a pioneer who always engaged his opponents head on with little to no concern for tactics or safety. Respect!!
