The conceit is that alchemy requires a circle with symbols on it that mark the truth of reality they need to change, so if you want to change fire, you need one set of truths about reality, those that concern themselves with what fire "is", if you want to change steel, you need another set of symbols that signify the truth about steel, etc. If you see the truth, you know so much more about reality yourself that you ARE those symbols, and symbols for more and more truths about reality the more of your portal of truth you see. So when you make a circle out of yourself, you are making a circle with the truths of reality you hold in yourself, and you don't need to trace one out.
The more truth you see, the more power you have, but the more you lose because this is the law of equivalent exchange.

Let's be real tho... in the universe of anime where it's fairly common for characters to be able to fly and punch mountains in half and whatever other bullshit, no character who can't do over-the-top world-destroying stuff like that is in the running for "one of the strongest (whatever) characters you'll meet in anime." She's powerful in the world she lives in, but I mean, which anime main character isn't? Discipline grows on trees in anime. You gotta be a specimen of human perfection before the author even comes up with a name for you.

To arms. Balsa from Seirei no Moribito depicts a much more human version of motherhood. She had her own life and goals before she became responsible for Chagum's safety, and before the end of her journey she doesn't just have to sacrifice her safety and resources, but has to compromise her own fiercely-sworn principles in order to do right by the boy. Throughout the entire story her own pre-existing goals stand at odds with the duty she's accepted to raise and protect Chagum, and every sacrifice she makes for Chagum's sake sets her back in her quest. It's an illustration of the way that the duty of motherhood often calls on a person when it isn't convenient for them, that once it does call it's morally correct to set everything aside to answer, and that despite how much it feels like moving backward in your own life goals doing so is ultimately worthwhile. So that she can do for Chagum what her circumstantial father-figure did for her, and that hopefully one day Chagum can do for some future child.
Few's the real human who, like Izumi from FMA, has no life path outside of being a mother and wife. For whom the decision to sacrifice anything else they have in life is easy because being a mother is the only thing that really motivates them. Also, the most significant sacrifice she made for the sake of being a mother also gave her sweet superpowers, and the duty of motherhood that she offers to the Elric bros boils down to very occasionally using those sweet superpowers to kick the shit out of a few unambiguously evil sonsofbitches. How many minutes of the show's runtime does she even spend in the same room as those two? How many lines of dialogue do they share? Whose real experience of motherhood does this actually symbolize?
Shit. I'ma go rewatch Moribito right now.

Look back at both moments of human transmutation thus far. Have you noticed? Every instance of the toll has been ironic. Ed wanted his mother back, and lost his brother who was the only family he had left and a leg he stood on. And right when he wanted to bring Al back he lost one of the few gifts that seeing the truth gives you. Al wanted to feel her warmth and see her smile again, and lost the ability to feel at all, and lost his own ability to smile. Along with the sense of smell and taste which Al said he wanted his moms cooking prior to the transmutation. And now Izumi wanted to bring back her child, but instead gave up her reproductive organs.
Just a detail you can pick up on quick if you’re paying attention. And there’s MANY details like that throughout. I’ll point them out if I notice any you miss. Honestly I’ve probably missed quite a few.

Hiromi Arakawa was meticulous in her world-building for FMA. Her _Silver Spoon_ series is great, too. I'm always a bit bemused by the fact that she, seemingly casually, had three children over the course of writing FMA and Silver Spoon.

    Fun fact:
If you go back to episode 2, in the part where Ed was thrown inside the gate of truth (when he says that it was like all the knowledge of the world was being put inside his head) in that moment you can see some images. One of them is an image of his dead mother (since she was the one he tried to bring back to life with human transmutation) and right next to that image is an image of his teacher Izumi. Which is a subtle and yet pretty cool hint about her eventual appearance in the series and her connection to human transmutation and that was explained in this episode.

The reason he blames his father for their mother's death is because, in his eyes, if he hadn't left she wouldn't have had to work so hard. She overworked herself taking care of the boy's/didn't take enough care for herself and was weakened by this when the sickness came. Her already being overworked made her body unable to truly fight off the illness.
In Ed's eyes if his father hadn't left then she would not have worked so hard. She would have been able to take better care of herself and been able to fight off the illness.

Brotherhood was made with the assumption that people had already watched the original series. That's why so many parts are shortened and some minor details left out (showing the brothers bonding with Nina before she grew too attached to her dog, this part, and a few others).
There really should be a guide for this series. To watch the '03 series up to a certain point and then swap to Brotherhood once it deviated from the manga.

  • @Uldihaa

One of the things this series does extremely well is keep characters acting and reacting within their own knowledge. Their perceptions of other characters and events are kept true to the point of view of the character at that time. Author POV doesn't 'bleed' into the characters, is what I'm saying.

    • @markhackett2302
      @markhackett2302 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also when characters react to others, they base it on what they would know. Ed just knows that his dad left him, his mom died, and he was left alone and unable to handle the responsibility AND his grief at the same time.

"It's okay to hurt." Probably one of the most impactful quotes in the series in my personal opinion, not just for the series, but for life too. @@markhackett2302 That isn't what I mean, it can help to control the emotion is what I'm saying. It helps to allow some form of relief. Sure it may not solve the original problem or the source of the hurt but it can still help, and if the alternative is to bottle up all of the emotion or pain, then it is definitely the better path rather than lashing out or causing yourself any more harm than necessary.

Currently society is built and expects men to pick 1 last and women to pick 2 last. But all three exist, and all three have a reason and point to it.

Everyone should know (if they don't notice themselves) that the "price" taken by the truth is directly related to what they wanted; Curtiz lost her inner organs, forever making her unable to ever bear a child again, Al lost his ability to feel warmth, which was what he wanted from their mother while Ed lost his leg, aka his ability to "stand with her", since he's the big brother, that's his role, as he sees it, without their father; to stand and support his mother. He lost his right arm in exchange for Al, the abiltiy to hold his brother.

The taboo is not a taboo because it's illegal. It's a taboo because it is often committed by people who have lost someone precious to them, and as alchemists, they take the denial stage of their grief to the ultimate limit. So far, everyone you've seen who can do alchemy without a transmutation circle is able to do so because they were just trying to bring back someone they loved. For Ed and Al, it was their mom. For Izumi, it was her unborn child. Its not a pleasant thing to talk about in polite conversation, so people don't, but it marks you all the same.

I don't care about what anybody else says after what I have to say here. Izumi is abusive and evil. The woman who wrote this thinks that it's being strong. WTF!!! Seriously. Asian women never speak they only serve so they have to be more assertive to be taken seriously. So that is what she put into here. She also came from a family of cow farmers who had their land taken away because they are a different race of people under japanese rule. They are not even considered to be japanese tho they themselves say they are. That must be why she made the characters like this because she wanted to show they were strong too. But what is so strong about abuse? It's just tv but after thinking about it I don't like the morals they show in some of these animes. Exspecially Izumi. And Eds abuse everywhere. From Winery and others. I don't like it.
