Best Punching and Texas Rig Setups for Bass in Heavy Matted Cover

  • Heavy cover offers a place to flip and punch a Texas rig for big bass. A good punching setup is key to success in these situations. Florida native and professional angler Jesse Mizell knows his way around heavy cover, and he shares everything you will need to catch bass out of the thickest cover you can find on your favorite grassy fishery.
    Heavy line and a heavy rod are crucial to your success while punching. Mizell prefers an 8-foot XH rod paired with 65-pound braided line. On the business end, Mizell selects the lightest weight possible that allows him to get through the cover. This requires going heavier than a 1-ounce weight at times. Pairing a streamlined bait with the correct size heavy-duty flipping hook keeps his presentation compact for efficient punching in and out of the cover. And he talks through why he has several different baits and what tricks he uses to get them in and out of the cover easier.

    I have kept a sharpies in my tackle bag for many years. You can use them to enhance or make a quick color change to your soft plastics as well. I've even colored hard baits black for a more pronounce silhouette in low light scenarios.

    I love the Tokyo rig for punching, you don’t have to rip that weight out of their mouth which can pop their jaws open and you don’t get a hook in them. With a Tokyo rig they only get the bait not the weight.

    It's always fascinating to me how most pros use 65lb braid. I've always use 50lb for past 15 years and never had a break off. Just my thoughts, I probably will regret not using 65lb one of these days

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  ปีที่แล้ว

      You see less and less guys going with 65 pound braid. 50 is good unless you got a big stout rod and extra heavy cover with a shot at an 8-10 pounder.

      Here in Canada near Toronto we still have hard water and fishermen are still ice fishing. Large and small mouth bass have a closed season until after the spawn and the bass have left their beds. Season here does not open until the third weekend of June. I can’t wait to be out on the St. Lawrence river and Lake Ontario fishing big smallies. I wish I was down in Florida punching the carpets. Have a great day and happy fishing.
