Confused Reviews - Episode 37 - Rambo: First Blood (1982)
First Blood (also known as Rambo: First Blood) is a 1982 American action film directed by Ted Kotcheff and co-written by and starring Sylvester Stallone as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo. It co-stars Richard Crenna as Rambo's mentor Sam Trautman and Brian Dennehy as Sheriff Will Teasle. It is the first installment in the Rambo franchise, followed by Rambo: First Blood Part II.
The film is based on the 1972 novel First Blood by David Morrell, which many directors and studios had unsuccessfully attempted to adapt in the 1970s. In the film, Rambo is a troubled and misunderstood Vietnam veteran who must rely on his combat and survival skills when a series of brutal events results in him having to survive a massive manhunt by police and government troops near the fictional small town of Hope, Washington.
First Blood was released in the United States on October 22, 1982. Initial reviews were mixed, but the film was a box office success, grossing $156 million and becoming the 13th highest grossing film at the domestic box office and the seventh highest grossing film worldwide. In 1985, it also became the first Hollywood blockbuster to be released in China, holding the record for the largest number of tickets sold for an American film until 2018. Since its release, it has been reappraised by critics, with many highlighting the roles of Stallone, Dennehy and Crenna, and recognizing it as an influential film in the action genre.
Its success spawned a franchise, consisting of four sequels (co-written by and starring Stallone), an animated television series, a comic books series, a novel series and several video games.

A thing you might not be clear of is this (that most people tend to miss when viewing this film) ...
One of the reasons (from the novel & from the many interviews with the author David Morrell) which sort of explains why sheriff Teasle has some bitterness and animosity towards Rambo from that start...is that Teasle was a Korean War veteran, while Rambo was a Vietnam war veteran. In his mind, he felt that Vietnam war veterans had more recognition (both positive and negative) in the public eye than Korean War veterans ever had (as for guys like Teasle, it was largely a forgotten war in the public consciousness by that time). So in a way Teasle is jealous of a Vietnam veterans like Rambo who is at least recognized & remembered, while he is mostly ignored.
The only scene which hints of this (also from the novel) are the Korean War honor metals on display in Teasle office in the police station (but blink and you may miss it). Very subtle touches that the director & set designer added in...
Moral of the story: Cops shouldn't harass a war veteran who clearly has PTSD.
There’s alot of aspects of the social commentary that is lost on those of us that weren’t alive for the Vietnam War or old enough to understand it’s aftermath.
Vietnam vets were hated upon coming back home. That’s why I love this film so much. It’s a time capsule of those times.
Absolutely vile the treatment they endured on top of the horrors they saw overseas. Crazy how this series turned into action schlock after this.
@@ConfusedReviews I agree 100%. A lot of films that have good social commentary that get sequels always tend to lose said social commentary. At least on a profound level. Robocop vs. Robocop 2 for example.
Trautman''s banter is iconic yet makes no sense. He lectures the sheriff about not knowing about war, yet the medals in the office show Teasle himself knew as much about combat as any of them.
After serving in the military I understand how Rambo feels in this story. Being military depending on the person is either a good or bad situation for you. And you don't want to have someone be a dick to you after you found out one of your battle buddies died.
One of my favorite performances of all time.
I loved this. You better start getting more subs.
Thanks man!
The scripts you write for these reviews are terrific.
Alot of veterans (incliding myself) have PTSD but to be a captured and tortured POW must be another level entirely.

FANTASTIC VIDEO.This is my favourite action movie of all time. This movie is so emotional and I feel sorry for Rambo.
Thanks man! Personally Die Hard and T2 are higher but this is still a near perfect movie! Too bad the sequels ditched what was great about this one in favor of a big dumb explosion-fest!
T2 and DIE HARD are fantastic movies.TERMINATOR and T2 are fantastic.
When James Cameron leave TERMINATOR franchise went bad.James Cameron also written original script for RAMBO:FIRST BLOOD 2.
The original ending is something that was unexpected but way more realistic with respect to how someone with combat related PTSD. But ... sequels
Gotta keep the gravy train moving! 🤑
Yeah interesting to because the sheriff is a Korean War veteran but there was animosity from other veterans particularly World War II and Korea War veterans towards Vietnam War veterans.
Been binging on your stuff since yesterday. Can’t wait to get your take on this.
the kicker to keep in mind, especially during his "unappreciated vets" monologue near the end, is that Stallone was a draft dodger during Vietnam (check out his Wiki page where it jumps from his birth to "while Stallone was in Switzerland...." ) and that there is not a single confirmed case of a protestor spitting on a returning vet, that's just a lame right-wing trope developed to demonize protest.
Another Spectacular Video for a emotional action movie that is a favorite of mine 😊
Thanks as always Brian!
Confused Reviews you’re very welcome as always 😊
I love this movie. Are you planning to do the rest of of the rambo series?
Eventually
Confused Reviews sweet
good shit brother! A+ for you to sir! 👍
Thanks man!
THEY JUST FOUND
RAMBO'S BODY
IN FACT IT JUST STOLE A
TRUCK
i always took the "flag on your jacket" thing as an implication of stolen valor
wouldn't make much sense for dennehy to be anti patriotic, especially since he's playing a veteran as well (though that's only hinted at in the film)
ATTENTION
WEARING AN
AMERICAN FLAG
ISN'T STOLEN VALOR
IF IT WAS
THEN THE TRUMPANAZIS
WOULD BE FORCED TO
STOP WEARING IT
THEY SHOULD BE ANYWAY
BECAUSE
THE TRUMPANAZIS ARE NAZIS
NOT PATRIOTS
Rocky-y-y and Rambo-o-o
gotta have that emphasis lol
The movie , first blood = best action movie ever or at least the second best action film ever - definitely within the top 5
I loved watching this video. That was an excellent movie review.
