- Last week, we hard a clear-cut winner during our Against the Odds poll: Panglacial Wurm, one of the most unique cards in Magic's history. While Panglacial Wurm is mostly just a big beater once it's on the battlefield, it's also one of the most complicated cards in Magic, since we can cast it from our library when we are searching our library. This essentially gives Panglacial Wurm flash, assuming we can search our library at instant speed. The end result is a strange green-white flash deck that's looking to jank out the opponent with some surprising instant-speed Wurms! Is Panglacial Wurm playable in Modern? actually though. Like one of the more fringe cards with a unique mechanic and it works fine? Why the fuck are there bugs for normal cards then -.-
Exactly what I was thinking.
I bet that if you search your library from some other effect, declare intent to cast Panglacial Wurm, activate Millikin to pay its cost, and mill Panglacial Wurm, that it'll be bugged.
It used to be bugged, but they fixed it. It used to turn all the cards in all players hands upside down if cast from the library. You could still cast them by clicking on them any paying their cost, but you didn't know the card name until it was on the stack. Quite fun.
Missed opportunity: the thumbnail art should have been a bunch of panglacial wurms throwing a surprise party for knight of the reliquary
so weird seeing a short on this and then seeing it's so old that it's under the old mulligan rules, talk about a blast from the past.

This deck also demonstrates how prevalent Path to Exile is in Modern. Time after time, our opponent pathed a creature, ramping us into Panglacial Wurm.
And then they didn't have the Path for the Wurm! haha
Seth, I love you, but not calling this deck 'can of wurms' is a mistake that I'm not sure I can forgive.

I don't think the bounce effect has anything to do with the ice really, freezing effects usually tap.
Mass bounce effects often have flavour to do with being swept or blown away, you can see the ships in the art aren't being frozen, they are being sunk. The bounce effect is caused by a massive creature bursting out of the ice into the ocean, it would be more flavourful for aquatic creatures to resist it (like Whelming Wave).
@@crabdog7945 i think its more fear : because every non horror creature get bounced,even those that fly. So imo it's just everyone "run away" except horrors cuz they don't know fear.

I came back to watch this deck again. I think the reason the episode is so fun is because it's-like-a child's deckbuilding.

We've all made a jank deck like this when younger, and it's fun seeing how successful it is here.
I once bought some cards off tcg player and in my order I found a free panglacial wurm. I gotta admit, they got me with that one.
So the theme of the deck is to surprise the opponent with flash creatures, and he includes a card that always displays the top card if the library. :)
I thought the same thing. That card choice was kinda weird to begin with.
Yeah, I get he wanted to be able to ramp with lands, but he was constantly giving away the surprise. Yet he STILL came out on top. #NoOneExpectsPanglacialWurm
On the flip-side (aha), Courser can help him choose to shuffle when Panglacial Wurm is on the top so that he might not draw any/many of his Panglacial Wurms. Especially when there's 4 in the deck already - and that finding more lands and living to 7+ Mana is key for this deck - Courser is a very snug fit here. I can't imagine wanting to take it out.
This is what magic is supposed to be a fun Weird deck that you build and surprise the people
I couldn't agree more... Most people FORGET that aspect of the game. I'm new-ish to MTG but I can't help but think my view on decks will never change.. I love janky wins! I don't care if I lose 10 times searching for that One win when the deck works like it's supposed to.

Exactly why Damping Sphere wasn't needed for that MU. Ghost Quarter, PoE, Surgical and huge beaters makes the MU fairly one-sided regardless so long as they don't have the nut-draw.

Note of Caution: I've heard that if you intend to bring Panglacial Wurm to a tournament, you're also expected to know all the screwy Panglacial Wurm rules.
Yeah what happens apparently is wurm is ran in tron rarely but apparently, you can cast the wurm and you shuffle after it resolves so you can cast stuff on the stack knowing what's exactly on the top of your deck. Like I can cast the wurm and see an Ugin on top so I crack a star to draw it.

MEMES MLG It doesn’t work like that. You can not cast or activate abilities while you are resolving a spell even if you are casting the wurm, with the exception of mana abilities. Chromatic Star has a mana ability so you can activate it to cast Panglacial Wurm but the trigger goes on the stack only after you end your first effect. You are confusing it with mana abilities like the ones of Mankin or Selvala, in which you mill/ draw the card immediately. I’m not sure about Chromatic Sphere which is not a triggered ability, but looking al the rules it seems you still draw the card after Wurm resolves (so after you shuffled your library)

@@ZenoKurosagi You are right. I initially thought Sphere worked as Selvala, but then I was confused by this part of its rulings: "you get the mana right away, but you don’t get to look at the drawn card until you have finished casting that spell or activating that ability.

Panglacial Wurm is one of my favorite cards so was really happy to hear that this happened. I wish all the modern cards were on arena so I could play funny decks like these.

I main Blue-Red Thing in paper and at first ot hurt to see it fall against Wurm Surprise... but then I realized, not without great amusement, that the deck has no out to a cast Dragonlord Dromoka. Just lol'd

Ugin wurm was play of the week... month... year
I'm recovering from COVID and need to hide in my room for several days. Luckily, I remembered this video existed, and it made me incredibly happy again. That last win against Ugin is still just *chef's kiss.*

I played a deck very similar to this at a Modern 2k a few months ago and went 3-3 with it. It's very powerful if you can survive to get your mana established, otherwise 1 Fatal Push is all it really takes to slow us down.
I really want to see this deck updated and see another against the odds with it. I would like to see how many decks a random 9/5 trample that comes with every fetch can beat.
Mono Red Strom is a whole lot more fair than U/R Strom.

When it's not your turn, there is no way to regain priority before the next step (and your mana pool empties). You would be unable to cast it unless it's in response to a spell your opponent casts.
No, to advance through every phase of the turn you have to pass priority... So he could have casted
@@TheArbieo The opponent passes priority to end the phase and you gain priority as phases end. So floating mana would have let seth cast a panglacial wurm

Btw, your sideboard in the intro is different from the one in the first game, Beast within(which would have been good against tron) and Knight of autumn seems to have been replaced by Carnage tyrant(which seem redundant to me with
Dragonlord Dromoka) and cloudthresher. Also, what's the point of having damping sphere if you don't use it against Tron (storm only?)?
This deck seems to play pretty much like a weird brew of GW ValueTown, featuring Wurms and Surprise Wurms.
I like it.
Why no tireless tracker? it lets you keep up mana during ops trun so it even works with the flash stuff

Should try a Mycosynth Lattice Deck with cards like Splinter and March of the Machines as an Against the Odds deck, Splinter essentially exiles all lands from your opponents deck with Mycosynth Lattice out
Seth you should have grabbed wurmcoil engine in match 2 game 2 when you activated fauna shaman. It's so much more life gain than courser of kruphix
Am I over looking something obvious when Supreme verdict is cast? I mean, float mana from the dorks (neither of which is summoning sick) -> let the spell resolve -> crack the fetch before the phase ends with opponent having no mana to counter -> ??? -> profit?

I know it's off theme, but this seems like it would be bananas with some Tireless Tracker. You're hitting up to four land drops a turn. Seems like better value than Ambusher, and then pull a Mindsensor, and maybe one Fauna Shaman?
One question, Seth: why do you always play noble before birds?
I feel like running that many colorless lands is pretty ambitious in a deck with so many double and triple costed spells, but I'm not an expert.
I'm proud that Panglacial Wurm doesn't crash Modo.
