A great cruise in the East bay, so long as it isn't congested! I-880 can definitely be the pain, especially south of I-980. Once that fourth Caldecott bore opens, that bottleneck effect will pretty much disappear. Great cruise that I can say I've done and enjoyed in person, glad you got to as well!
That postcard at 4:14 dates more likely from the early to mid 70's, with the BART track fence in the median. It's always nice to see those BART trains roll by!
awesome video again Jim, dont know if too many people remember that major incident that happened in one of the tunnels where a tanker or something like that exploded and sent a fireball all the way through the tunnel. speaking of the weather I remember I went through the beginning of the tunnel, weather was clear, came out the other end and it was raining like you wouldnt believe...best part of the video, seeing all the vehicles bouncing around in high-speed....Thanks again Jim
5:38 You can see the swing gate. They hadn't built the fourth bore yet. Back then you sometimes didn't get lucky and there was only 1 tunnel going in your direction.
Great ride, great tune for the ride and awesome... have to say I have always liked California's freeway signs. They're different than what you'd see in OH and elsewhere... I like what they've done with I-880 as I do remember the '89 quake that caused the collapse- not surprised they decided to redo it.... would love to see what that road is like once it's completely redone! Great ride- loving your California trip thus far!!!
Thank you! Yes I did cross the Golden gate Northbound in video #13-17 and I have one coming up where I cross it southbound. It is a very beautiful bridge indeed!
Great video! I will say that the alignment of I-880 between the maze and I-980 is the newer right of way. The alignment where Cypress viaduct was that collapsed in 1989 is east of I-880, along what is now Mandela Parkway.
Enjoyed the video, even though I always hated that drive. With the video speaded up it was terrifying, particularly with the two Semis side by side! My Son & family live in Orinda.
I got 3 questions: 1. What's the name of the tunnel? 2. You're going back to Oakland? 3. Why did you name it Oaks and Walnuts? I love the video AND the music. Thanks Jim! (FreewayJim)
I remember when you had to take 980 to 880 in the late 80s to late 90s. If you can (or did already), the 280 from just outside Daly City to Los Altos is probably the most beautiful urban area freeway in America...if I have a choice between 280 and 101 between San Fran and san Jose, its 280 all the way!!
I remember the hillsides above the tunnel being mostly barren of homes for so many years after the Oakland Hills Fire of 1991. Looks like they finally got the place repopulated.
Excellent as always. I love going for those rides especially when I'm not driving!. Did you drive across the Golden Gate Bridge? I think it's so beautiful and have dreams about it.
That is a standard size postcard, Continental size (4" x 6") started being sued in the early-mid 70's so as a longtime postcard collector I'm pretty sure it's from the 60's...could be the late 60's, sure, I believe that interchange was built in 1965-66.
1. The Caldecott Tunnel, I pointed that out in the video just before we enetered it. 2. Yes, next video 3. Oakland to walnut Creek...think about it. Thank you!
I'll take a crack at these. The name of the tunnel was listed on the bottom of the screen. Oaks and Wanuts probably refers to Oakland and Walnut Creek, which is rather pervasive in expressway signs.
I drove 880 only once, when I was a teenager, in the late 60s (I wasn't a very skilled driver). At that time, the route was was called 17 the Nimitz and was one heck of a scary drive running from the approach to the bay through the mountains to Santa Cruz. The northern part of highway, was choked with a huge number of trucks in addition to cars traveling close together at an intolerably fast rate. The beat-up pavement added to the danger of the route. In those years, many generic items were manufactured in the cities south of Bay Bridge that currently would be manufactured overseas, which was probably responsible for the large volumes of trucks.
Oh I-880 has been completely redone, they decided not to rebuilt the Cypress Structure (double deck) and re-routes I-880 west towards the bay before hooking with the original alignment just before downtown Oakland.
Ohio has a lot of old-style signs, CJS, along with a lot of good ol steel bridges, some in need of upgrade! The really pathetic place in terms of upgrade need is Philly!
I edit the footage to the tempo of the song and if it calls for a pause then I'm going to do it, that's just the way it's going to be but thanks for watching.
The Caldecott Tunnel cuts though the Berkeley Hills, we’ll be going through Bore 1 just Like The Broadway Tunnel which opened in 1937
Awesome Views!
Awesome Video
Thank you!
Nice Views

Terrific Jim, thanks for bringing the country's roads to all of us waiting for some time to hit the roads like you!

Very good!
Thanks!
Very nice!
I drove CA 24 in 1988 - but at night. Nice to see it in the daylight. Nice ride.
Thank you! Yes I did cross the Golden gate Northbound in video #13-17 and I have one coming up where I cross it southbound. It is a very beautiful bridge indeed!
Nice Ride
Thanks
@ 5:04, the BART line disappears into the Berkeley Hills Tunnel, and reappears behind that groove of trees @ 6:30.

Splendid video as always, Jim! I can't wait until you guys start rolling out the LA videos!
Drive safe,
Alex

Thanks, yes they were. I'm guess it has something to do with controlling the traffic flow at that construction area, meaning it's only temporary.
I remember the hillsides above the tunnel being mostly barren of homes for so many years after the Oakland Hills Fire of 1991. Looks like they finally got the place repopulated.
Thanks again Jim, great ride
I remember you using it for one of your Atlanta videos which was awesome.
Great ride! What's up with the no shoulders on I-880? Pray for no breakdowns!
Thanks, I really did enjoy the ride, CA-24 is a must see for that area.
Yo mate forgeting Fairfield and San Leandro exit marina blvd east
@@danielvargas6960 I did not forget anything, I don't mention EVERY exit, which makes the video to cluttered.
In Oakland San Leandro alameda its completed now
You'll get to see the other direction in the next video, thanks!
Bay area is beautiful! Traffic doesn't look too bad by CA. standards. Did you pick off days or hours for the ride?
Excellent as always. I love going for those rides especially when I'm not driving!. Did you drive across the Golden Gate Bridge? I think it's so beautiful and have dreams about it.

So I take it that the Westbound tunnel that runs next to the one we were on will be switched to full time Westbound when the 4th bore opens?
Thank you!
1. The Caldecott Tunnel, I pointed that out in the video just before we enetered it.
2. Yes, next video
3. Oakland to walnut Creek...think about it.
Thank you!
You’re welcome Jim
^ Well done John!
That road belongs in the NYC area, lol, thanks!
I've seen that video and I have to say it's one of my favorites!!!!!! Freewayjim's versions great too!!!!!
Is it me, or did you slightly slow the speed of "Love Magic" for this video? It seems about a percent or two slower than the commercial version.
Thanks Alex, working on them as we speak :)
Thanks, yeah we avoided rush hour as best we could, shot this video after the morning rush died down.
Yessir! Thought it worked better here.
great video the songs suit perfect nice freeway too thanks freewayjim
I'll take a crack at these.
The name of the tunnel was listed on the bottom of the screen.
Oaks and Wanuts probably refers to Oakland and Walnut Creek, which is rather pervasive in expressway signs.
Freewajim, why is I-880 so jammed?
Too much traffic and an antiquated design in some places is my best guess, IDK I don't like there.
I drove 880 only once, when I was a teenager, in the late 60s (I wasn't a very skilled driver). @@daffodil9075 thanks for the explaination
Wait a minute... I went down that highway to get to Valley Springs!
Thanks for watching, glad you are enjoying the videos.
Oh I-880 has been completely redone, they decided not to rebuilt the Cypress Structure (double deck) and re-routes I-880 west towards the bay before hooking with the original alignment just before downtown Oakland.
I did not film that section of I-280, it just didn't work out to where I took that route.
Thank you Andrew, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Geoff!
Thanks!
Two words come to mind with the intersection at 4:15 - Spaghetti Junction!
No I did not slow the music at all, interesting.
Thank you for watching!
I was thinking that maybe you could do a playlist of the 2013 season. What with the season finale and all
Not a bad idea, I'll consider that.
or maybe something similar to the video 'highway star'
Brandon Gabriel No, I'm not going to do one of those but thanks anyway.
ur welcome :)
say, how many 'episodes' do you plan for the next season?
Interesting...I've always liked East Coast sign style and personally disliked CA signage. It's nice to hear an opposing point of view :)
Ohio has a lot of old-style signs, CJS, along with a lot of good ol steel bridges, some in need of upgrade! The really pathetic place in terms of upgrade need is Philly!
OH.
It's similar to Kansas City
I like watching your videos but I hope you never make any pause to the beat again, very annoying.
I edit the footage to the tempo of the song and if it calls for a pause then I'm going to do it, that's just the way it's going to be but thanks for watching.
