Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this information! I was wondering if there are classes for English speakers to learn French. I’m an American citizen who works as a licensed social worker. I’m also worried about your winters. I’m currently living in the northeast US so we also have long winters, but I’m sure it’s not as cold as Montreal. But I feel so drawn to the city.

@@miraafloyd I feel that NY for example gets more snow lately, and Montreal get colder weather (which snows less when it's really cold, but you still get snow there). If you don't have a car and can live near a metro and do everything near metro, you're golden.
French classes are offered for free in Montreal for non French speakers. I'm sure it's the same all over the province. As for the weather, if you have the right equipment, you won't feel an insane difference with what you already know in northeast US but Winters are a bit longer though and some days can get really cold but it's not everyday! ;)

Try watching Canadian TV in French (especially Radio-Canada, the French equivalent of CBC). You will learn to speak with the Québec accent, which is quite different from what you would hear in a French movie from France.
The skiing shots were not taken in Quebec. You can skate on the lac des castors and cross country on Mont Royal in Montreal. Really fun to do under the full moon. You can have a hot chocolate in an art deco building on Mont Royal. 2000 La Gauchetiere has the coolest indoor ice skating rink .
What I do not like when people talk about TAx and cost of living in The province of QC is that you almost never mention we have day care for very cheap price because Quebec subsidise it In qc $8.00 a day, Ontario they do not And BC it is $75.00 a day, Also when doing income tax year end you can ask for GST and QST partial return. And so many more other tax benefits. I could go on but why don't you just lookit up
Renting Apartments in Canada at present, all one finds for under over $1000 are over priced, mold infested, Cockroach infested and over noised, smelly pot drug apartments, unreal.. i ask when did this country Canada become like this.

@@Sesshomaruwifu typically European Union passport holder can come to Canada up to 6 month (minus 1 day) visa free. You just need to apply for eTA (which cost like 7$). Of course, if you plan on working or studying, then a proper visa is required.
Homelessness is a new phenomena. Last 15? years? i think as investors buy property around the world and the rents keep going up by 10% every year ( investors...) more and more people will be in the streets. Wages are not going up by 10% every year. In the states, landlords are allowed to increase rents by 10% every year in my area. I wonder if Montreal has a 10% cap or other?
I don't think there is a cap but you have to justify the rent going up by doing renovation. If not you can only going up to make for inflation or taxes going up

Sometimes paid with English or Jewish money, the French Canadians were the builders. So all the old buildings you see, the roads, were built by French Canadians. French Canadians are French people intermixed with the Autochtones starting in the late 1500, the two " races" needed each other to create the really successful fur trade . And maybe a bit of Irish in the late 1800. The culture, the language is "French from the King " , the French before the revolution. That is why it is different than the French spoken in france . "Poor. marginalized" people did not settle Quebec like they did in the USA. KING Louis IV was building a colony ( the businesses of the time) . The French Canadians could entertain and thrive in Canadian winters. French Canadians worked in the lumber industry, in the mines along Autochtones ( just less diluted French Canadians lol) all over Canada. Very dangerous work. It was never the English doing the work. so for 500 years, we are used to switch to the english language to accommodate the english bosses, but you have to understand if you are coming to Montreal now, and you choose to only speak english, you can see how Quebecois people will HATE that. You want to only speak English? the rest of Canada is your oyster. What makes Quebec great is the values carried on by Quebec people. Even the legal system is French. Quebec only opened up to the outside world starting in the late 1960s You want to work in Quebec city where my first ancestor was born in 1621? speaking French is nonnegotiable, learn english if you want.

My French isn’t always the best. It’s best I brush up on it before moving correct? I feel like it’s difficult to get public health jobs abroad
Try watching Canadian TV in French (especially Radio-Canada, the French equivalent of CBC). You will learn to speak with the Québec accent, which is quite different from what you would hear in a French movie from France.
Its better to learn and speak International French than Québec french because you can't understand if you were not born here.
