Birch Bay is often referred to as the NW’s premiere village by the sea. The town is located close to the Canadian border in the very Northwest corner of Whatcom County. Approximately 100 miles North of Seattle, 35 miles south of Vancouver, BC, and 16 miles northwest of Bellingham.
Archeological evidence from the area indicates that the bay was settled by the Semiahmoo tribe and was also used by the Lummi and Nooksack tribes. The first recorded western history was in 1792 when the Vancouver expedition sailed through the Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Since the early 1900’s Birch Bay has been a favorite travel destination in Whatcom County with many beachfront homes and resorts, accommodating seasonal residents. Today there are approximately 8,500 residents residing along the 21.2 sq mi of beachfront access nestled in between the northern headland of Birch Point and the southern headland of Point Whitehorn. The main thoroughfare is Birch Bay Dr. which runs the length of the town.
On the south side of the bay, you can find Birch Bay State Park. A 194-acre camping park with over a mile of saltwater shoreline on Birch Bay and over 2 miles of freshwater shoreline along Terrel Creek, while also boasting panoramic views of the Cascade mountains and Canadian Gulf Islands. The park is open year-round and is home to a natural game sanctuary as well.
The Blaine school district serves the population of Birch Bay, with school services consolidated on a large campus in central Blaine. Approximately 2,500 students of all grades (K-12) attend school in facilities that house separate grades, respectively.
Overall, Birch Bay is an excellent place to take in all that NW beachfront living has to offer, with miles of beachfront access and a relaxed small-town setting. It stands to reason that people have been living and vacationing here for over 100 years.
