The ship felt real because the interior was built in its entirety. You could actually walk up the entry ramp and down through the cargo bay to the stairs. From the stairs you could go up to the second floor which had the crew quarters in kitchen. The large open cargo bay in the gangway above it allowed for filming.
@russellspillman9056 Do you know if any of the parts still exist? A dream of mine if I even won the lottery would be to build a house that would look and feel like a Firefly, and place it in a suitable looking area of scrub.

It was actually 2 sets. The upper deck and the lower deck, while continuous from front to back, were built as 2 separate sets. So to go from one deck to the other you'd have to go different sets.
@@Riceball01 Yeah that "oner" in the movie has one hidden cut there as they transition from one stage to the other, it was probably done for practical and safety reasons (reasons why multi layer sets are quite rare).
This is the first video I've seen about the Firefly class. I had no idea that the class had more than one variant and that Serenity was a gen 3 model. Very nice. Thank you.
Yes love the show and the ship , every time I see Serenity I think she kind of looks like a abstract horse knowing that her Capitan is basically a space cowboy it makes me smile
Still flyin' in our hearts. Amused to see the "multiple light years" rating when the canon shows the show all taking place in the same system. Joss liked to pin down such minor technicalities even like that Trek.
A ship able to access all the planets in a system without taking years and years might well be able to cross interstellar space, though it would probably require lots more resources and space.
Given the distances in canon, and travel times shown, a sublight non-Newtonian drive would make sense. Speeds too fast for a simple fusion rocket with a mass ratio fitting the illustrated ship, too slow for a superluminal drive.
@goldenknight578 Hehe, I sat up thinking I was seeing things. Had to go back in slow mo. I dont have many friends or family who enjoy shows like Firefly and BSG. So it's nice to know that out there somewhere there are others who like to geek out over scifi.
I still want a game which gives me a ship (and crew) that feels as much like home as Serenity did. Maybe one day they'll make a Firefly game that does it justice.
Ah yes, the old favorite. not the oldest favorite, but probably the best. Always carry a spare catalyzer! It's only a "nothing part" until you don't have one!
Nice video. For those not in the know, Joss Whedon once mentioned that the basis for the Firefly series came from his university days when he used to play the Traveller role-playing game. The ship was designed as a "far trader" within that game, so would have been intended for inter-system travel (having a jump-2 drive). Watching the series always made me miss the good old days of playing the game ( I still have all the original rule books). It does help explain why the ship always felt so real though, as there were many detailed deck plans published for different ships, and a lot of work went into many of the designs. (Sorry. Reminiscing about Firefly/Serenity/Traveller always brings out the inner geek in me!)
Love. You can learn all the math in the 'Verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home. Oh how I love this ship!
There's a special place in hell for the executive who cancelled this series. It's not even the worst place in hell. It's just a place where you feel a constant sense of anticipation that goes unfulfilled forever.
She likes to complain that nobody gives her credit for being the one to give the series a chance in the first place. I say that just makes it worse if she can rip out its beating heart after getting it started.
Sounds like that buffer panel is not necessary 😆 loved the show settings and overall vibes, the characters were great .. humourous but also gritty and dark when needed. and loved the ship .. it felt like home with the dinner tables and the personal rooms ...not shared Jayne 😉
Years ago I had a book about fictional spacecraft drawn or painted by famous sci fi artists. One of them was the Rovey Wanderer which looked a lot like the Freely class. Google doesn’t seem to know that it ever existed. Wish I still had the book.
I knew there was a military version. But that artwork now has me jonesing for somebody to do a spectre gunship version. Think of how much dakka you could squeeze into that cargo bay😁 Shiney indeed.
No mention of the Lambda shuttle cameo? Its even in this video! In the pilot episode as Inara's shuttle is docking a Lambda class shuttle takes off in the background. Look at the shuttle pod pic at 3.35.
Given Humanity's current technological level, the world of firefly is the most plausible future for humanity. Still a very nice ship and would take her in a heart beat, the only thing I never liked about the Firefly Class was the landing legs.
I've been watching Blake's 7 on Blu-ray which is very much a spiritual predecessor to Firefly and a twisted anti-star trek, right down to the logo of the baddies being the Starfleet delta on its side. The Liberator is also the most beautiful ship in all of sci-fi.
You know I never realized it had High speed FTL it always seemed to be light speed/low FTL. The show always felt like humanity found a few systems and got there the long way after the Earth died. Hmm never actually knew the lore.
I would love to see videos about the ships or races from the Perry Rhodan universe. The way in which technology and the relationships between races develop over the course of thousands of years of storytelling is phenomenal. And all of this is done with a level of detail that you would definitely enjoy. But with the limited release in English, that's probably wishful thinking.

It would be interesting to look at the Serenity vs. the Millenium Falcon to which was the better smuggler's ship. The Falcon was rather heavily armed, so maybe it's not a fair comparison.
If you're going to be getting into more non-Trek ships, I'd love to see a breakdown on the MCRN Corvette-class. The Rocinante is one of my favorite sci-fi hero-ships.
in Out of Gas,after the "engine" (drive?) failed, they were running on what's left of life support, but they still had generated gravity,or the crew would have been floating around the ship, not walking on the deck.
Not sure where the range numbers are being derived from seeing as Firefly is a setting without FTL and a "range" of 400ly would mean the ship would be able to leg it (in relative terms) back and forth between blue sun and the inner planets likely in excess of tens of thousands of times (pulling that number out of my butt, I think the verse is only a few light hours wide at most, so it's likely that's a gross underestimate).

That's because the Firefly has an actual cargo bay with loading ramp.
