  • Every congressional debater needs to know how to give good early round speeches. Although these may be considered more simple and straight forward than later speeches, a good early round speech takes a great deal of vision and argumentative prowess. These speeches, including the authorship/sponsorship, will often fundamentally frame the debate.
Breck will cover the principles of early round speeches and constructive material. He will review how these principles can be applied to real speeches and use recordings from national tournament recordings to help you visualize this process.
Breck DuPaul has been involved in Speech & Debate for three years as a competitor. He has a love for teaching having taught sailing, English, and math to kids in Virginia and Ohio. In Congressional Debate, Breck was a TOC finalist, NSDA semifinalist, Harvard semifinalist, the Runner-Up at Yale, Champion at Durham, 6th at Florida Blue Key and a Finalist at the New York City Invitational. He was also invited to the Harvard, FBK, and Durham Round Robin, where he placed 2nd.

Tbh final appeals are too OP. At tournaments with finals appeals, they should make it so that the sponsor/author is considered the last speaker of the item. It’s only counted as one speech ofc, but it’s listed as the most recent speech on the spreadsheet. That’s fair because they are actually the most recent speaker, so it makes sense. Also, they don’t have the best precedency for the next item, so they can’t have the sponsor for every item. Speaking significantly more than everyone else AND having the best precedence is a little too much.
