Just ordered a muzzle for a reactive dog after two years. It's just a precaution but never wrong to train. My partner isn't happy about it but I think it's necessary to keep every party safe

I have a rescue. I never really "trained" a dog before. I was happy with my slim chihuahua terrier for 14 years and he was naturally friendly. He was a bit fearful but I socialised him from our beginning. Pumpkin was about a year old when I rescued him. This fellow was about a year and a half old and has bonded to me in the few months I have had him. But he hides from my Dad when he comes to the house while I am at work. When I am home and my Dad comes, JoJo barks, growls and tries to bite. He is a chihuahua terrier combo too, but built very solid - I thought he was overweight but he doesn't eat a lot and has not slimmed down since I have had him. I plan to start dedicating time each day to train him because he seems quite fearful and reactive. My former dog just wanted to be loved. But I think JoJo needs more than just love. He needs discipline that makes him more confident and gives him a feeling of safety. I bought a muzzle today and happened upon this training lesson. I am going to have to start from scratch training myself to train a dog. I am patient enough but have been too permissive and ineffective.

This really does impress vets. I remember one vet saying "I have never seen that work" when I asked my fearful dog to put the muzzle on in the vets office. I was shocked that the vet was shocked. 🤣
Also, these are awesome steps! My first +CER changed my dog training mindset when I saw the results: a very happy dog! I hope others can experience that through this training!

I had been puzzling about how to go beyond compliance to “Oh, Joy!!!” (CER) when she sees a muzzle (muzza). The video is a great step by step “how to”.
Thanks for this episode. I will need it when I will have my puppy Dobermann. In Bulgaria and other EU countries it is obligatory big dogs wearing the muzzle in public places and transport. I will go through the protocol from young age and hope she will like to wear it if necessary.

Muzzles can be a great idea. My dog wears a mesh muzzle because she has low immunity and can easily get sick from eating what she shouldn’t. I can still give her treats with the muzzle on. It’s a win-win.

This was an absolutely brilliant podcast and such a beautiful way to teach your dog to love and use a muzzle. I totally agree, it is definitely something we all need to be able to do with our dogs. I taught my dog to love and use his head collar using a similar method (based on the same kind, patient and joyful approach) and have never looked back. Thank you Susan!

Thanks for this great resource - I have a new to me Jack Russell who I know has used a muzzle before because he has raced in Jack Russell events and they are required to race in muzzles. I plan to go through all your steps though and make sure he is completely comfortable in one. Both in case I decide to race him and in case he needs one for vet stuff in the future. I have seen a lot of JRTs stop in mid race and try to get their muzzle off!
Every dog should be muzzle trained, even if they're the friendliest dog in the world. My dog is friendly but the vet wanted him to wear a muzzle. I had been muzzle training for months, but he freaked out when they tried to put the basket muzzle on him at the vet and now I'm worried our progress is ruined 😭 hoping this vid will help

Worked as a Vet. Tech. years ago & we used to call them "Party hats" in a really positive way & TONS of praise if they were good !
Just about any dog over 50 lbs got this as a "just in case". The place I am talking about was a somewhat "inner city" animal hospital with lots of noise, people, etc. (To be honest, many of the dogs were Pitbulls & they were exceptionally well behaved ONCE you got them away from the owner !)
P.s. this might be an interesting topic for a post. How owners knowingly or unknowingly teach their dogs really bad behaviors !

The muzzle training itself is going well. Tripper is unconcerned about reaching into the muzzle for treats and tolerates it on for short periods reasonably well. My problem is finding one that seems to fit properly. I started with the Coastal soft basket muzzle. Size 3 seems too tight around (our Rally trainer agreed) and size 4 seems too big all around and the straps won't shorten enough. It looks like he could get it off if he tried. The Baskerville basket muzzle looks to be similar sizes, but has slightly different proportions and strap configuration. I haven't tried one on yet. Any suggestions?? We feel the need for one because he is reactive to strange people and dogs. Sometimes he is fine with a person, but he has reacted aggressively a couple of times to people. And he hasn't been around children much. We live on a farm and need to get him out where people are, but are hesitant to do that until we have a muzzle that works.
Imagine the ability in the US to take large your dog on public transit only needing a muzzle. Many places in Europe allow this. We need the stigma to vanish here.
I have my 100# GSD wear a "Barkless" silicon basket muzzle when he is off leash with me on a trail, or making new dog friends, because we run into other dogs who come flying at him! It's okay by me if he flattens them if necessary, but not okay if he bites., or picks a little yapping dog up! I muzzle him when he is first making new friends, and the silicon is soft, he can still play with soft toys, drink, eat, snow doesn't stick to it, he could bite a small pinch if he was really being attacked, but it just prevents puncture and real bite, still allows real play. I don't know why they call it barkless, he can still bark in it!

Initial thoughts before watching the video: Make sure you know how to fit your dog's muzzle properly! Many people improperly fit their dog's muzzle (not purposefully of course) which can cause health issues and increased anxiety. It's important for dogs to be able to drink, take treats, and fully pant in their muzzle. Dogs are not nearly as effecient as humans are at cooling themselves down, panting is their main cooling method. They need to pant, and the muzzle needs to have extra room so they can freely open their jaw in a relaxed full pant. Also, make sure to go for a basket muzzle, biothane muzzle or a jafco so that there's some air circulation. Avoid fabric muzzles that hold the mouth shut for 3 main reasons: 1) Dogs can't cool themselves down properly 2) No matter how well conditioned it is, having your mouth kept shut for extended periods of time is uncomfortable and can be scary (imagine not being able to open your mouth when you want/need to!) 3) they're NOT bite proof or scavenging proof.
This podcast probably covered this info, but I thought I would include just in case. If the Dogs That team sees this comment, and the info is not in the podcast, maybe consider including it as many many people make muzzle fitting mistakes which can be detrimental to their dog's wellbeing! Proper muzzle feeding and muzzle type (basket, jafco, biothane, fabric) is basic muzzle 101 knowledge, super important!
Perfect timing with this topic! I recently purchased a muzzle with the intention of doing CER training similar to the head halter model, but hadn't started yet because the muzzle I bought is way too big for my dog. Any tips on sizing a muzzle to buy when bringing your dog into the store (or ordering online) when trying it on is not an option?
Hi @SterrettStudios, thanks so much for watching, and it sounds like super timing! There quite a few people who custom make muzzles and have what to measure with their info, so that might be a great option to look at as a guide.

Tell all my students to get your dog used to wearing a muzzle after one of my instructors suggested it, especially if you travel with your dog. If something bad happens, the first thing a vet will do is put a muzzle on your dog - so why freak them out twice - once when the muzzle goes on and once with whatever the vet has to do to the dog. My Dobes love their muzzles! I have the Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle - one is light blue and the other one is black. My guys don't even try to get them off. Another key is to never make them feel bad about wearing one. What a handsome dude! Don't take it off if they do try to fight it, but if you do it like this video says that shouldn't be an issue. I got my guys familiar with them for an entire week before I ever even tried to buckle it on their face. My younger Dobe is a bit less confident than his older brother, so I will walk him in to Tractor Supply with his muzzle on. People come right up to him to say hi and pet him, no worries. My muzzle is more for his reaction to people rather than dogs. The muzzle actually boosts his confidence I believe. He seems fine being petted when his muzzle is on. Normally, if the muzzle isn't on my younger Dobe, I really have to watch his body language to let people know, ok, stop petting him now please. With the muzzle on, think we both relax more and he becomes more like his older brother who is a therapy dog. You can pet me as long as you want - please don't stop. TY team and am sure groomers and vets thank you as well!

I would love to see a video on how to shape a dog to use shoes. This video was super helpful and I feel like you're one of the only trainers I've met that could teach shoes. I've worked with a total of 18 trainers so far and all of them have been completely stumped when it comes to shoes.

I don't know if I'll ever need it, but the head halter is working so well. The training was so easy, and he has a positive CER to it. We're moving on to muzzle training. I think it's important just in case there's ever an emergency when we need it. I want my dog to be comfortable and calm, not add fear to an already stressful situation.

The one type of muzzle that you did not mention or address in your podcast is one that prevents a dog from eating and grazing on things it should not have. I realize that training would be a little different as you can't give treats through it as that would defeat its purpose. You can load the inside while training to put their head in it. Even if you don't don't show training it people may not be aware that this type of muzzle exists. I trained my now 14 month old dog just because to accept a regular muzzle. Then it became evident how bad of a grazer he was with rocks and trying to eat all the mushrooms that grow in my yard. He can get these items with a regular muzzle. I have a Jafco muzzle ordered so he will be safe in the yard. Also some countries (I think Australia) put out some type of poison out where people hike.
Had a major setback with my highly sensitive dog. She never had issues with the muzzle or me clicking it closed but something happened and now she runs as soon as i motion to fasten the plastic clip on the muzzle. She also jumps now when I clip her harness closed. Is it just a point of working on the clicking sound and the motion? Is there anyway for me to change up how I fasten the muzzle to eliminate the trigger of my hands going behind her head? Very demoralising plus we need to travel by train where she needs to wear a muzzle the whole time. I feel like we're worse than square one now. 😢

We have done the conditioning with our dog and she is fine with wearing it. Has been daily for 30 to 90 minutes almost daily when we play dominoes in the afternoon. But when wearing it around my sisters dog she fights incessanctly, both paws, to get it off. Sadly we discovered the basketville ultra is not escape proof . with enough paw force the plastic clip buckle will release. Very frustraring.
Just got the muzzle today and started feeding her through it. This is so helpful. I adopted her a week ago and she broke loose and attacked a neighbors dog. I never had a reactive dog before, so I really need advice on keeping her calm and everyone safe. I've seen other trainers on youtube, but you are much more positive in your approach. Thank you!

My dog has had many ear infections since he was 6 months old and we missed his warning signs to the point that he bit the groomer when he had his ear checked. He had since treated but I think it created the fear reactivity and I can see everytime someone tried to do something around his ear he can be reactive. How would you advise me approaching the clipping the muzzle at the back of his head pls? I managed to get him to eat through the muzzle and put his snout in but clipping muzzle behind him is for me a big hurdle. Thank you so much.

@@RaptorsGirl for example the dog gets to point that he is willing to introduce the nose and wait for the reward and can tolerate that but the moment that he feels pressure from just putting the strap close to his neck, the game is over and if done the a few more times, all the positive association wit the muzzle goes away ang has to start all over again.

I would spend time every day reverse muzzling and place your face stages. Once he is happy with that hen at the end of one session shape him to put his nose near the opening…he doesn’t have to go all the way in, just click and reward for getting near at first then going in further and further. Let me know how that helps.
My dog is terrified of the muzzle. He runs away and hides in his kennel if he sees it. I don't know how to get him to like it.

Hi Susan and Team. I'd love to know which countries in Europe that it is compulsory for a dog to wear a muzzle when being walked down the street. I know that in the Victorian age in the UK it was compulsory but that certainly isn't the law today. Many European countries stimulate that muzzles should be worn by large dogs on public transport though I have to be honest, I have yet to see that being enforced (I have visited 37 out of 44 European countries). The only country that I know that has recently instigated a muzzle law (public transport, in front of schools and kindergartens) is Austria (with the option of implementing to non built up areas). I'm saddened that you may be using such click bait tactics - hope I've misunderstood and would love to hear your thoughts on what image you were transmitting to your followers.
Hello @Qwerty Kotchka many countries require dogs to be wearing muzzles on public transport. Additionally, if there are tourist attractions, public or private, where dogs are allowed, a muzzle may be required. Many countries also have breed or breed type specific muzzle laws, and some have muzzle laws based on weight and size of the dog for public areas. If you are travelling Europe with a dog, it's recommended to carry a muzzle and check the laws of each country, region, and specific places you are visiting.
