  • This is my backyard project I've been working on. I've watched a lot of videos and have read through quite a few forums to get to this point, but it's a continuous work in progress!
The pond is a 275-gallon stock tank I purchased from Tractor Supply. I built a homemade filter out of a 5 gallon bucket and some quilt batting. It's sitting at the bottom of the pond on a brick at the right side of the pond and has a basket over it. It feeds the bog filter to the left of the pond. All of the baskets were purchased at Dollar Tree for cheap. There's no need to pay $10+ for a pond basket from a nursery or Amazon. The lilies came from Facebook marketplace and were quite a bit shorter than they are now. They have grown drastically in the past few days. The floating basket is full of watercress that I bought from HEB. I didn't think the cuttings would grow, but they took off. I used clay, non-scented, cat litter as the substrate for the lilies and watercress. I currently have 4 aranda goldfish, 2 telescope fantail goldfish, and 4 large shubunkin goldfish in the pond. The fancy goldfish came from nextdaykoi.com (highly recommend), and the shubunkins came from Facebook marketplace.
It's a work in progress, but it's been fun to tinker with, and the wife and I LOVE to sit on the patio with a cold drink and listen to the water noise. Our daughter loves it, too, as well as friends that come over. Hopefully we can keep it clean and clear here in West Texas!
