Why? Why is it lazy if a game isn't open world? Look at a game like Undertale or Deltarune. Those things sure as hell aren't open world yet are wildly popular enough to spawn a bunch of fan games. Hell, look at Portal 1 and 2 as well being very popular and well received despite not being open world. Or look at the Gen 5 Pokemon games, which are seen as very well made games despite not being open world.
Also since you never specify, what about games like Friday Night Funkin or Doki Doki Literature Club which literally CAN'T be open world based on the genre they are in? Are those developers lazy because they didn't choose to make a game that can't be open world to begin with? I know you were probably referring to RPGs, but still you never specify.
