Vidhya Sivakumar Hi Vidya! I used a 3mm 3 ply cotton cord. 3mm is a good size for a small hanging. The 3 ply allows you to get more fringe at the end if that is what you are looking for.
Seema Tahasildar I used eighteen 8ft long cords for this. You could probably cut your cords to about 4-6ft but the longer the better really because the square knots take up quite a bit of cord. Then you can cut the cords to whatever length you want. I made the length of these about 1 ft.
