Caves of Altamira doesn't get the recognition that it deserves... It's a pocket song that just flows... I just spent the weekend in New England and to watch the season change with Dan in the background was super sweet!!!
Agreed. The original is undercover funk for sure but this whole album has that going on. The Fez is my new favorite SD song... They seem to put just a smidge more backbeat on the verses in their rendition here and when they square it back up but really accent the open hats on the choruses it's like icing on a cake. You think it's just the mix of this recording or am I crazy?

Caves of Altamira is a Top 10 Steely Dan song for me, to be honest. Such a unique lyric in the band's catalog, there is no band quite like Steely Dan, before or since.
Steely Dan still moves my soul as they did when they first released their songs. So many levels and so much depth in so many songs. No one makes music like this any more. The Royal Scam is one of my all time favorites, but Dr Wu and Don't Take Me Alive surely rank with The Royal Scam.
I got this album in 8 track back in 1979 when I was in the eighth grade. My 8 track player ate it weeks after getting it. I ended up buying another 8 track of "The Royal Scam" to replace the one that was damaged. I still have it. I have all of the Steely Dan albums from "Can't Buy A Thrill" to "Everything Must Go", along with all four of Donald Fagen's solo albums. I like them all. "The Royal Scam" is my favorite.

Agreed - one rough spot for Jon in The Royal Scam solo section, but those chords are really complex so I supposed it sounded OK. He just looked a bit lost. Nobody can ever argue that he doesn't know the Kid Charlemagne solo note for not though! Super job there!

Jon Herington is quite a talented guitarist, as he has had to learn so many techniques of the multitude of fine pickers used by the Dan over the years.
Thanks for posting. The sound mix guy must have taken a nap on this show. Everything is bright, up front all at the same time, two guitars soloing at the same time.
only thing missing from this magic set is Larry Carlton.... But excellent work on the recording. Donald's voice has really held up nicely. I've seen these guys live from the 5th row, and I can say that Donald Fagen puts more effort into a live show than anyone I have ever seen. Constant striving for excellence and details. No one else at his level.
DF has referred to his voice as a "necessary evil" but I like it and wish he would sing directly into the mic more - feel ripped off on a bunch of the lyrics. Just the same this is AWESOME! Thanks for the great seat!

kind of late but they are doing it in spanish (sort of) i think they are saying yo no voy a hacerlo si no tengo un fez (which would translate to im not going to do it if i dont have a fez, almost right but they can get away with it because no one in the audience knows what they are saying) The chorus is pretty funny for a native spanish speaker like me because they are saying what sounds like Yo soy aso (they say aso, which is not a word in spanish but they probably ment así. If they said yo soy así they would be saying i am like that (could also be i am like this). The following line doesn't make much sense since they say quiero ser tu (I want to be your) and then end it of without saying actual words.

Again.. great music quality but the videography is pretty bad. What's with the blacking out of screen just to change a featured player? Why not just keep a wider pan of the stage to see what the audience sees? And THEN... Zoom into to video the solo(Guitar, singers, brass) I KNOW you can do it!

great audio but buy a tripod and keep your hand off of the zoom control. Stay on one subject. Your quality will improve immediately. If you want more shot variety, get a friend to shoot the same way, and then edit the footage. : )
Back in late 70s me and my pal were tripping in his dorm and this other dude wanted in so he took some and we are having a great time till he started questioning why we kept playing steel Dan records. He finally uttered the memorable line I still quote him on 40 years later….”you know guys……The Dan is not god!” We put him in his dorm room and left for tacos and beer. Looking up he had his window open and was yelling THE DAN IS NOT GOD! Wearing an ape mask. My pal didn’t even know his name but we called him dangerbird from then on. 40 years later I’m still laughing at that
