Great video Paul. I really like the idea about putting the compressed pellets on top of the shavings. I've been doing it just the opposite for years, but I like your way better. Thanks for the tip.
I keep Guinea Pigs, another prey animal and have kept Rats in the past too. Naturally I love my animals, but I'm also aware that in nature they would likely be food for predators such as snakes. I am pleased to see that your 'feeder' set up is clean, monitored and in excellent condition. It is so good to see the animals are healthy and cared for during their life span, which in nature is usually very short. Well done!

What make are those rodent racks? If you could tell me the manufacturer I’d appreciate it. Excellent info in this video and I will be using this to expand and improve my rodent project
Great setup and healthy rats but it's a bit unfortunate that they don't have full range of motion / ability to stand up and stretch. Would also be very grateful for a bit of enrichment like bits of cardboard, I think.
This is why im gonna use 50qrt tubs so i can have like 1 male to 5 females and they have plenty of space until the babies are ready to be weaned. (I use water bottles too so the water nips are not a problem)
Awesome set up!! I'm still using the diy racks I built in the beginning but I now know I do want to invest in the FB rat racks soon as it's feasible for me, looks amazing and I'm sure cleaning would be far easier than the tubs I use right now.
Nothing wrong with diy as long as they work for you and your animals. But for anyone that plans to breed long term I would say they are worth the investment. They are so good and will out live me
Wish i had the space and time to breed my own rodents. Great video paul as always. That is an immaculate setup and system you have developed there pal. 👏🏻
Great video brother!! I do it very similar I just have limited space so I just take the babies from mom about 3 weeks and put them in a same sex shallow grow out tub. Also due to limited space I selectively pick baby females from females that give large litters. I also retire them after 6 months to keep the litters big.
It sounds a good system you have mate. I hear a lot of people saying they retire females after 6 months but I have females that are over 2 years old dropping 16 plus babies. So they aren’t going anywhere yet 😆
What are your bin combinations? I’m looking at getting the fb rodent rack and like your setup with maternity/birthing bins on top and breeding on the bottom.
Breeding tubs are 721 I have a total of 6 levels of 3. Top ones (maternity) are 1050 and I have 8 levels of 5. The huge rack is 44-4. I’ve also just ordered the other rack I found out I need that’s call the 824. I’ve ordered 6 levels with two levels of the maternity tops on top. I believe this will give me as many tubs and breeding groups I need to feed all my snakes
Thanks for the great video. I see you have your feed hoppers and waters in the front, do you find that adequate? I know some breeders place the feeders in the back and the waters in the front. Is there anything you would change at this point? Thanks again for the great video.
Can you please tell us what tub sizes your using. The freedom breeder website doesn't break it down fully. I don't need to breed on a huge level. But I think I could use one rack like yours to feed my small collection.
Yes of course. Here you go The tubs on the bottom where I have 1.5 are called Rodent 721-30 The maternity tubs are Rodent 1050-10 and the huge holding rack is Rodent 44-4 Plus the rack not shown as I haven’t got it yet but I talk about it is Rodent 824-20 Since the Rodent 824, 1050 and 721 are all 21.5” front to back. They are all compatible with each other. So all you need to do is make sure you have one castle level for each rack and then mix and match the rest of the levels. I hope that helps!?
@@urbanconstrictors. it does thanks man! I’m going to look up on freedom breeder right now and see what you mean specifically. Did you just ask freedom breeder that you needed this specific tubs or???

On day 7 (cleaning day) it’s pretty smelly. But the day I clean to day 5 it’s not bad at all. I clean everything really well and use a mix of wood shaving and wood pellets what helps a lot with odour. In warmer months I have the fan attached to the wall running 24/7. So no smell at all. But if I do that in colder months the rats get too cold. Then they’ll stop breeding. So I’m trying to just get it right. Not much sell and max production.
Are you sure you have both a male and females in the same tub. This sounds daft but it’s quite surprising how many people have groups of girls thinking one is male only to find out much later down the line they are all female.
@@urbanconstrictors. So when the rats are hungry they just reach into the holes and work the pellets around until some drop through? I'm just a little unclear on how that works.
No I don’t. It’s not really possible with ASF. They’ll kill any new comers to the group. Even ones that was a part of that group and is been returned. The best way imo is to put 1.6 or 2.10 in a tub and let them get on with it. Then if or when you loose one from a group it’s best to let a baby group up in that group. I hope that makes sense
Oh man i use to work at a mice/rat farm an i can remember the smell lol. Not saying ur cages are dirty but having that many mice/rat has a smell in its self. Lol. On day 7 it does smell...But that's cleaning day, so to be expected. It's not bad enough you can't enter the room, but it's bad enough... I just leave the door open for 15 mins and then go in.
