- This is a short scene from the noir film Laura...starring Gene Tierney and Vincent Price. In this scene Vincent Price's character(Shelby) puts the moves on Laura. You see Shelby and Waldo exchange a few fierce/friendly words to save face in front of Laura...classic scene imo! This is another film in the Fox Film Noir series and is available on DVD!

Too funny! I love this movie to bits! Such a dark, but strangely entertaining film.
Vincent Price in an atypical role, a playboyish guy who cast an eye on Gene Tierney. Still, his delightfully sarcastic way of talking and dealing with all things are already present. Great Vincent!! Thanks for posting.

He was gorgeous - handsome, tall and well built with that wonderful voice. In the 1940s he was offered a $1 million movie contract but astonishingly, he turned it down, because it would have restricted him to playing romantic leads.
Vincent was an actor who loved his craft and wanted to play a variety of interesting character roles. What an extraordinary human being he was, in umpteen different ways! There will never be anyone quite like him, he is forever missed.

I miss that show Mysteries and Scandals learning about these older actors. Gene Tierney was a knockout and went through allot in her life and still maintained her dignity and class. She was a remarkable woman.

Watching all the classic films on the Rotten Tomatoes top 100 list and came to this one. Never heard of Gene Tierney but absolutely fell in love with her in this. Didn't realize that was Price either til the movie was over. Tremendous film!
My favorite actress. Leave Her to Heaven. Dragonwyck. Male Animal. Ghost and Mrs. Muir. She was under-rated.

I don't think the people who made this film so long ago, could imagine how important it would become today! And if it's not one of the most talked about films yet, it should be... even the dialogue is prophetic, "I sensed a situation which would bear watching." I plan to write a book about this film.
Do write your book! It is a film worth writing about. One of my favorites.

Vincent Price before he dominated the horror film genre. I think that it is safe to say that Vincent Price was to the horror film genre what John Wayne was to the western film genre. I wish they would show The Abominable Doctor Phibes and its sequel every Halloween night.
I always watch "Count Dracula" on Halloween night now that I am too old to go trick or treating.

I love this movie, it's my go to when I can't sleep, I don't know if its the music, but sometimes I don't get past Clifton Webb in the tub.
Me too! If I get past the tub scene awake, I usually re-start it. The music is lovely, the conversation has a nice tone and pacing. And if I happen to make it pass a few scenes I get others Vincent Price’s amazing voice. Prime also has a short version of the Christmas Carol with Price as the narrator. In the winter, that’s my go to!
God, did women know how to dress back then! Gene Tierney's gown and hair style set her beauty off perfectly.

Ironically, the ideal actor to have played Waldo Lydecker (the Clifton Webb role) as he appeared in the novel would have been Sydney Greenstreet. In the novel "Laura", the author, Vera Caspary, portrayed Waldo as an immensely fat man who cultivates his snobbish attitudes because his girth has ruled him out of the sex games with which Laura's set amuses itself; his whole manner is based in spite at life for not making him a "player" in love. I have to say that I find Webb's take on the character to be much more interesting. It's always fascinating to watch someone of intelligence and ability, who could have led a rich and fulfilling life on a legitimate basis, freely choose evil because they can't resist manipulating people like puppets. (Waldo in the film is a direct descendant of such classic literary characters as Shakespeare's Iago and Edmund, and Chekhov's Solyony.) All in all, a wonderful film.
Oh my God you're right. Sydney Greenstreet would have been fantastic for the roll, although I agree also Webb was a fantastic choice. He did a really good job of getting inside the character's head and showing the manipulation, control, and other weaknesses he had. God damn I love this movie. It's terrifying in a different way than horror films, more psychological, I think it gets to people because it's just so easy to fall into this kind of situation, like it's accessible and believable.
@@Mithreniel As a Christian, I have always found "Laura" to be fascinating, because the title character lives the Christian ethic (regardless of what her own religious beliefs may be), in sharp contrast to almost everyone else in her "set". (Living IN the world, without being OF the world -- a necessity for all men and women of faith, unless they enter convents or monasteries; and Fred Zinnemann's wonderful film "The Nun's Story" shows that there are plenty of spiritual crises and pitfalls even there.) A key line in this regard is when Mark asks Laura why she is so determined to protect Shelby, and she replies "Because Shelby is the sort of man whom EVERYBODY suspects, whenever anything goes wrong." She is fully aware that Shelby is a weakling and a wastrel; but she also knows that that does not affect his right to live his life in peace. When Mark finally says: "For such an intelligent woman, you really surrounded yourself with a pack of dopes", I always wish that Laura would respond: "Yes, I probably have. Can you point me to a social circle where that WOULDN'T be true?"

Had Greenstreet never appeared in film until Laura, he would have been a perfect fit. However because he was known as a villain, the audience wouldn't have been surprised about his guilt. The casting Clifton Webb was on point because he hadn't appeared in movies in over a decade. There was no established screen image so that means many of the audience probably would have never guessed that he was the guilty man.
@gnsback The great Warwick -- Bob Hope's favorite hotel. I appeared there many times. Miss Tierney lived in River Oaks.. a few stumbles from the Warwick. Miss Gene rests next to her husband, Howard Lee, at Glenwood.
I fell in love with this film like 35 years ago. And still loving it! Can you recommend similar films?

Hearing Vincent speak without that accent feels so wrong to me but interesting all the same.

How dare you to write about any other film beauty than Gene here? ;) Ok, you are forgiven as Linda was insanely attractive and beautiful - despite being disturbingly(!) young- in Zorro. Still... I would place Gene Tierney and Debra Paget ahead of her in the list of the most beautiful actress in the history of cinema. I would put Linda fighting of the third (to fifth) spot with Hedy Lamarr and Michelle Mercier.
