I nearly didn't come on the Arctic Expedition - I was worried I'd not be able to manage it! Now look at me :D What an experience, I'm so grateful to have been a part of it!

Interesting to see your trip to Svalbard, I bet it was much colder than it looks on the video? Must have been unnerving having to do polar bear watch, especially with sleep deprivation. Hopefully I will get to visit one day!

Thanks for your comment Nick. Yes it was a little unnerving, and I certainly rehearsed in my head on watch the procedure for if a bear did show up. But it was also very unlikely, especially inland in that area so I guess I didn’t worry all that much.
The wind was certainly cold, but it didn’t drop below about 5-decrees C at any point 🙂

I'm loving your recent videos. You really have been and done it all havnt ya. Did you know what you were doing? Like had you been there before? Or did you just route the whole walk yourself? Like who did you get advice off for the route? Loving these

Thanks Ev. Yes I’ve been extraordinarily lucky in how much I’ve been able to do and see of the world over the years!
All the required skills for the trip we had before going, though Laura was still relatively inexperienced. I researched the area via reading blogs and stuff in advance, as well as making sure we ticked all the red tape before going - particularly with getting relevant forms to allow us to rent the rifle. The route was decided by looking at detailed satellite images that the Norwegian polar institute has online for free, and honestly the terrain isn’t hugely different to the Scottish highlands, unlike some other trips to jungles or deserts!

Hi Fergus, wow mate, what a mega trip, that looked awesome. I can't get my head round 'Polar Bear watch' and neither the fact it's broad daylight at 11pm at night. Haha
Thank you for delving in to the archives to bring this to us.
    All the best

Thanks! Yea polar bear watch was tough with the sleep deprivation but also a nice time to absorb the atmosphere and landscape 🙂

Given they have polarbears there, I would not travel with anything lighter than a bazooka

Unfortunately they didn’t have bazookas to hire 😅
