edit: Alaska has crossed the rainbow bridge. 🌈 thank you for the lovely comments. she's not suffering anymore.
Just to let you know: Alaska does not have a brain tumor. I tried CBD for a long time but it wasn't enough for her (although it helped!!!) and she needs to be on phenobarbital. She is currently at my parents house, they live in the country where she can roam around the garden. It’s been difficult to keep her in my tiny flat because the narcotic drugs were causing panic attacks. She’s doing reaaaally good still! Also - she was in the shelter for 2 weeks only, that’s why they didn’t know about the epilepsy! They did not hide it from me. Thanks for all the wonderful comments!

My dog Henri was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy at 1.5 years old. After an episode of seizures that landed him in an emergency veterinary clinic for 1 week, we were forced to travel 2 hours away where he spent another 1.5 weeks being cared for by a wonderful neurologist and her team. Spinal tap and MRI were completed but the results were inconclusive due to the severe brain trauma he had experienced, it was impossible to differentiate the inflammation due to trauma and the possible cause at this time. Henri is turning 10 on December 10, 2019 and he couldn't be more of himself in these later years. His seizures are still common, which usually happen every month or two but his medication have been a great help in reducing the frequency of his seizures and reducing the chances of cluster episodes.
All that said, dogs with neurological issues can live full lives. Find the right doctors and work with them closely, your furry friend deserves it.
Thank you for sharing this story. Canine epilepsy is more common that most people know, bringing awareness to the issue lets others know that they are not alone.

we onece too ka agressive senior cat from friends of my grandmother
we where not knew to cats and our family cat was a rescue and shy at the start so we figured we coud gain her trust
well when the senior finally let my father pet her ..he noticed a bad mell and it became clear why the cat was agressive
there was a tumar near the throat we took her to the vet but it spread everywhere in the mouth so we had no choice but to put the cat down after all that work
but the agression came from pain and her teath and everything was in bad shape so she couldent even eat properly she also stoped to groom her self so we decidet it would be the best
but uneblivebil that the former owners just gave up on her
after my gandmother past away we did not stayed in contact with them
i mean if a animal suddenly turns agressive there must be something wrong
that easily could have been that case for this poor dog but she only was scared without agression

when we were getting a dog we went to one of the most overpopulated shelters in my city. it was so sad to see all these dogs there barking wanting a home. then we finally got towards the end and we saw this silent senior dog in the corner of her cage. her previous owner had died a few months prior and she was getting closer to her.. date.. i knew she was the one not many would want. old, caked in mud and feces. we came back the very next day and when we saw her she was actually excited. she has her issues and needs but she instantly became a part of the family. i truly wish older animals werent ignored. they deserve better. i am so happy for you and alaska to have found each other. i salute you. thank you for being the hero this dog needed.

My old dog had epilepsy. And when you showed the clip of Alaska starting to have a seizure my heart immediatly was pumping FAST, this is how much of an impact it left on me. We had to put him down on 31.10.2013 after the strong medicaton left him blind and the seizures basically took his whole personality, he was just a shell of himself the last days of his life. I remember comming from school this day and I knew he was going to be put down in a couple hours from there. He was just lying there and I took him and layed down with him. I started crying and this little dog who wasnt even on this earth no more, couldnt see a thing, suddenly turned around and LOOKED at me, then licked my tears away. Eventually he stopped and fell back into not really being there no more. And its still one of my biggest regrets til this day that i couldnt keep my shit together and stopped crying.
He fought for about 4 years and doctors adviced us to put him down, but we thought that he wasnt ready because there were plenty of episodes in which everything was fine. The worst times were when the weather was changing. Like spring to Summer, summer to Fall and so on. But the Rest of the time he was perfectly fine, until ofc the last ..id say month of his life.
Til this very day when I hear noises that resemble the ones he made while having a seizure, even if its just for a split second, my body has a reaction and I kinda Fall back into panic mode before realizing that everything is fine. The rest of my family experiences the same. But at the end of the day we did everything the right way and if i had to experience the 12 years we had with him i would, right away. I loved this lil man and I miss him and I know hes been grateful. What you are doing is great and I wish you all the best and all the strength! Im so thankful for People like you!

I totally understand you. My puppy had epilepsy too. It was the HARDEST seeing him going trough panic attacks. Everytime that happened we were all cry really hard trying to keep him calm. He end up passing away during his last seizure, when he had it after that he stayed with a tic moving his mouth and he was not stopping for hours.. he was gonna get check the next day cause nobody (vet) really know what to do at that moment. I just woke up the next day, and he was dead.. he died in pain (which is what hurted me the most). All I remember that last night is that he was looking at me with teary eyes while he was shaking, in that moment I just knew I wanted him to be in peace and not be in pain anymore; I knew he was suffering really bad. I will never forget Ruffo, he took all of our hearts in such a little time that he was with us (4month puppy). I know he felt loved and take cared of until the last day of his life. I will love him forever. I’m sure your dog felt the same way with you guys.

Adopting senior dogs is the best! It has a sad side, though, knowing you won't get much time with them as with a puppy, but the brightest side is you will give them the best life they deserve and you will stay with that satisfaction.

Deet.....I've taken a few old doggs......all were so grateful & loving as if they knew I'd saved them ! Two I'd taken from women who were giving the older dogs up at KILL shelters. That was why I went there.....to save a dog from being killed!! But.....one lady was in line waiting to dump her old dog off....dog was sooo sad, as if he knew he was going to die. As soon as me & boyfriend took her.....she was ecstatic, running around like a puppy, loving on us, etc! She knew!! Then years later.....I had a family....we move to small town. Went to small kill shelter to save a dog.....while in parking lot. A lady was getting out of her SUV with a beautiful white haired German Shepard....she was crying, upset. I knew most likely she was there to dump her off! I went up to her....she was leaving her cuz bull crap reason. I took her....long story short..... We also adopted a smaller dog from shelter. She was a min pin who hadn't moved n 3 days from her bed. We took her outside.....loved her.....and had to wait till she was fixed before taking home. Because, I called so much.....we got her early instead of waiting a whole week! I wish EVERYONE could adopt or foster......there are sooo many scared & terrified dogs & cats waiting fur us to show them what real Love is!!

My dear, I can't tell you how happy I am that there are people like you out there. I had a dog with epilepsy and it was the hardest challenge in my life. I thought I was going insane because i was so scared, that even the tiniest amount of stress would induce a seizure. She was also clustering and had to be put into a coma to get her out of the cluster. Sadly the meds didn't work for her, tho we tried every option and combination out there. She had to be put to rest with only three years of age, because she couldn't wake out of the coma without having the next seizure. The times where she was whining and panicking, because she just could not understand what was happening to her, were the worst. But she was also such a happy energetic dog and she showed me, that every second of fun, sunshine and love was soo much more important than the bad times.
I wish you two all the best and many days of adventures together and I am so proud of your incredibe strength and compassion. It doesn't matter how many days she has left, but how much she is loved everyday.

Do you think people are a lot more aware or compassionate about dogs/pets in Germany?

Phynchen 😐 it’s not even that bad. Instead of making dogs suffer (dogs with serious health problems that can’t be fixed or dogs that aren’t adoptable) dogs will be painlessly put to sleep. Which is a lot better because when a shelter is full dogs will be refused and have to live on the streets but a lot of shelters are no kill shelters (especially where I live) so they foster a lot of dogs because of course the shelter will get full. It’s not that cruel at all if you think about it I’m sure a dog would appreciate that so much more than being locked in a cage all day watching humans walk past as all their friends just go one by one.

There is a movie called ‘City Of Angels’ where an angel who greets someone after they died asks them as they journey to heaven “What did you like the best” in reference to living . Alaska is going to tell her angel that it was YOU ! She’ll be there to greet you and smoother you in kisses when it’s your turn to cross over. Love never dies ! You were probably the only love she ever knew. I will say a prayer for her to get well.

My dog used to have seizures and it’s the scariest thing to witness knowing that you can do nothing to help the situation other than just talking to them and being there. Waking up in the middle of the night to is terrifying and you never know how bad it’s going to be.
We eventually had to put her down because she was getting too sick to the point where she sat basically unresponsive to anyone for about an hour after being too tired to walk home from a walk, and there ended up being a lot of underlying problems that were never picked up.
You have done an amazing job with Alaska. I’ve always wanted to adopt senior animals, just for the fact that even if it’s only for a short time, they’ll be able to experience love and happiness and pass around people that love it and not alone in a cage.

My sister and her boyfriend have 3 dogs - all of them rescued, the 3rd one is a 14 years old girl who used to have problems with her vestibule apparatus and is partially blind. They got her from the clinic, where she spent a month of treatment and at first was scared to get up and only crawled around because of the vertigo and dizziness. The first time she met their dogs she got up and even started to run and chase them playfully, leaving all the vets in happy tears. She had no problems with dizziness after they took her home and she's perfectly able to walk around with no problems, except for when it's dark. She's been a happy, playful and very loving dog for nearly a year now. She's easy to look after, she loves apples so much that she has to have them everyday, she runs and plays, loves cuddling and everything cozy and she's perfectly healthy, so much so that the vets couldn't recognize her and taught she's a young dog the first time they saw her again for her routine check up. My boyfriend and I are adopting soon too! ❤ Senior dogs are blessing! Thank you sharing your story, sending lot of love to you and Alaska! ❤❤❤

I also adopted a senior dog with epilepsy from a shelter. He was there for 4 years - nobody wanted him. He was my first dog too. On the way home in the car - he gave me his paw to hold the whole time. He had 6 seizures a day. We found the right amount of dilantin and phenobarbitol - he wound up having only 2 seizures a year after that. He only got one walk a day at most during his 4 years in the shelter. After I had him - he had 3 or 4 walks every day for the rest of his life. At age 12 he had a stroke but recovered completely. Then he had 3 more strokes and recovered pretty well. He was still able to do his "happy somersault" when I came home. He was so happy all the time. "Happiest dog in the world." I completely changed his life and he changed mine.

A lot of older dogs are not wanted simply because of their age but no matter what age they should still be loved. You are a true Angel. She looks so happy and its all down to you. God Bless you, she is absolutely gorgeous. ❤😘 and just for the record, this had me crying ALL the way through!

Bless you for letting her into your life. I had a cluster dog for ten years. She was the absolute love of my life, but we struggled with her epilepsy for six years. She spent the last few months of her life in and out of the ICU before she ended up brain damaged from a severe seizure, and we had to let her go. As difficult as her care was, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Seeing the love and devotion in her eyes and having her lie next to me and flop her head upside down into my lap was the most amazing part of my life with her. I still say she gave me way more than I gave her. So, again, thank you for letting Alaska into your heart. You will never regret it.

You have given her a life full of love and happiness and she deserved it. The fact that she was given weeks to live and it’s now a year later shows that you have given her a purpose to keep fighting ❤️

I can't put into words how much it means to see that you stepped up and gave her a chance to keep living a better life for the years she has left. I wish more people would open their hearts and homes to senior dogs, they're awesome and them being older or a little more fragile shouldn't stop them from getting lives they deserve.

I have been adopting senior dogs for a long time. They are so grateful for a loving home in their final years and that it is so rewarding. Currently I have 2 senior girls, one I've had since 8 weeks and she is 13.5 and the other I adopted from a rescue shelter a year ago and she was 10. Babe came from a puppy mill and was very mistreated. Taken me almost a year to gain her confidence and trust. She had refused to eat or drink initially so I hand fed her for weeks until she finally ate on her own. Then she wouldn't eat from her bowl if I was watching or anywhere near her. Now she jumps up and down on from legs when meal time comes. So rewarding to see such a gentle soul come alive again.

I adopted a senior dog too. She is currently almost 12 years old and even tho she has some behavioral issues I truly love her. She is so incredibly thankful. I know dogs are happy when you get home but she really is happy. She wines and cries as I pet her and I could swear she is smiling while she does so :)

Oh my goodness all I could think through this was how much, and how highly I thought of your commitment to this dog. Most owners maybe even myself would of thought about putting her down because of all of her medical issues. Not knowing if moving forward or ending this is best for her. My concern for my pets as they age and start to have issues is always, are they suffering or in pain. Plus the vet costs are staggering, I have a little dog now I got through a foster fail, she has cancer, I can see it, actually see it through out the nasal passage area on her face she has issues breathing and sleeping, some days are just so much better than others. I am literally uncertain daily if today is the day I should make the very difficult choice of putting her down. I can’t tell you strongly enough how very proud I am of your commitment and efforts here with Alaska. It’s so great you have given her additional time at your parents home. It sounds wonderful for her and so great of them to do this for her too. What a great story to share All of it, the reality of her needs and the good moments Thank you.

We just had to put down my 15 year old lab mix Daisy in September. She had been through many lows and highs and just seemed to always recover from every sickness but this time she couldn’t recover. She went from a dog who loved eating and walks to being barely able to stand up and not even eating her favorite treats. We did every test possible and couldn’t find anything. It was sadly just her time. It was the hardest thing I have ever been through in my life and am still going through. Alaska reminds me a lot of my Daisy and I miss her so so much. I am so glad we got to have her for so long and in my opinion, senior dogs are the best!

Im in tears..last summer we put my family dog of 15years (he was living with my alcoholic father and didnt get enough care so me and my bf adopted him) to sleep because suddenly he started having seizures and blood tests showed kidney and liver failure pretty much.. he spent many hours on IVF etc but seizures continued, he didnt eat or drink. All that said I still feel like there could have been more we could have done..everything took place over a 5 day span and I still have this horrific feeling in my heart that maybe we didnt fight as long as we should’ve... It will haunt me for the rest of my life most likely.
I am so happy that you gifted this wonderful animal a life!! 🙏🏻☺️

I had my poodle for 17,5 years. He faded fast his last year. Epilepsy as a young dog, tumour... he was 14 when he had an operation to remove the tumour. He didn’t recover fully after having been sedated. His last two years, possibly longer, he needed the bathroom every two hours and couldn’t hold it. I was up several times a night taking him outside and often cleaning accidents. I would give everything I have for those years back. Those last years and months were full of the deepest love I’ve ever experienced 💔

Senior dogs are the best. Her quality of life is so much better thanks to you. This story made me bawl my eyes out because I have had several dogs that have lived to be very old- one was 19 & half years old and the other was 18 & half years old. I am currently caring for a 15 year old English Bulldog named Lola. Lola is the sweetest most lovable dog ever who was dumped out in the country and brought to me because my neighbors know I'm the crazy dog rescue lady. After giving her a tick bath I was looking online to find an appropriate rescue place. But by morning she stole my heart and I've had ever since. Old dogs are great dogs. It breaks my heart when old dogs are displaced and end up in a shelter. I wish more people would consider old dogs as a choice when they go to the shelter. They are wonderful companions.

I adopted an older cat a few years ago. She was pretty much 12 or 13. She also had a medical problem where the hair under her chin fell off every time she got stressed. So it always looked like she was smiling. I took her anyways because she just rubbed on me and loved on me and only wanted to be loved. She was the best cat I could have ever had. I also currently have an elderly dog and she is amazing. Older animals can be amazing. Thank you for doing that!! I know that means the world to her.

What a horrible experience. Our beautiful German Shepard was with us for 3 short years. She was off-leash and enjoyed the great outdoors with us on every adventure. We had all the brain scans done, no tumor. She ultimately succumbed to her last and final seizure last year before summer =(. It was a heart breaking drive all the way to the animal hospital where she was put down. There was no coming out of this one. Such a horrific experience but she taught our family how to love unconditionally and for that we are very grateful for our time with her.
