Swooping Magpies and Swooping Crop Dusters // Springtime in Australia 🌼🚲🦅

  • It's that time of year again! Australian magpies are nesting and will attack almost anything within a few hundred meters of their nests. They'll swoop without provocation targeting cyclists, pedestrians, even other animals if they think they're a threat. Some of my previous magpie swooping footage has been used by the Australian Museum in Sydney and extensively in the media this time each year.

Six Tips for Dealing with Swooping Magpies:
1 - If you're in a group, don't ride at the back. Let someone else take the hit! :)
2 - Cover your ears - They love a good ear scratch.
3 - Cover your neck - Another scratch zone.
4 - Sunglasses - Although they almost always attack from behind. Protect them anyway.
6 - Make eye contact - They won't swoop or come too close if you're looking at them.
6 - Raise a hand - That's usually all it'll take to keep them off your back, literally.

I was a spotter 'target' for a cropduster once. Stand at the fence and wave a flag, the pilot lines me up head high at 100mph, walk ten paces, do it again. Exciting stuff!! There is a Maggie at the Smythesdale footy ground that just crashes into your head without warning, i know it is there but still scares the crap out of me every time. Good vids of the beady eyed little buggers.

"This is a training ride for both of us," then "Thanks, mate - see you tomorrow." :) A lot of us are feeling a bit isolated these days, and personally I've always preferred birds and planes and just about anything to humans, so whatever it takes... That made my day anyway, Shane - great fun! :)

Magpies are weird, I was feeding my local Magpies some scraps yesterday and they flew up into the nests in the trees across the road. They never attack those that feed them or even live locally as they recognise faces. A stranger walking up the street could and no doubt would get dive bombed.
Ive ridden wearing a black helmet and a black jersey with two white stripe found the back and when riding with a mate he got swooped but not me. He had a team jersey quite bright colours and a white helmet. I'm thinking that maybe darker colours and a white accent makes you look less obvious and maybe more magpie 🙄

There's been quite a lot of discussion on the BVRT FB about holographic tape put on the back of the helmet as a long tail. I wonder if that would work for you for that route. I have also wondered if you stopped and fed them some meat if that would make them more friendly to you
