Thank you for posting this! I just replaced my screen following the example in this video. A suggestion for the video: when you are trying to remove the glass, when you say to push in at the bottom, the step should say that you need to push the glass in and slide the glass down a little at the same time. Once I did that, the glass popped right out. Thanks again!
For those struggling with the glass or any of this video please follow the video exactly, very very exactly. In the video he pulls the screen up til the cable is visible through the bottom of the glass (this is crucial) only then will you be able to press down enough on the bottom of the glass enough to remove it. The techniques are very specific, follow them exactly as described or you'll end up frustrated with this break down and maybe damage you device.
When you put the glass back in, slide the bottom 'notch' ("The little extended bits on top and bottom") under the metal body of the iPod, and then slide a little bit of the glass face in as well. Just a tiny bit. Then I pushed the top of the glass in gently to get the top 'notch' of the glass under the metal body of the iPod at the top. When I got the top notch under, I used my thumbs to push up on the glass to slide the bottom out from under the iPod body and into place.
I have dead iPod, so just for entertainment and because I always like to check out the newest tech that falls into my lap, I mostly followed your video and got it apart OK. My Model A1285 had a metal frame holding the battery. It is also very helpful to use a hair drier or heat gun to heat the iPod up so the glue lets go easier. EE Rob.
Fixing it usually involves replacing the component. The act of taking apart the ipod will not fix it unless there is an alignment issue with the clickwheel which usually is not the case.
Finally a good repair video, it's almost the same with the 5th. Now I can change the on/off button on the top, I just have to get the tools on Ebay for $1.5. THANK YOU GUYS AND A BIG THUMBS UP FROM ME!!!!
I have replaced the LCD and glass screen, following everything you described. However now the iPod does not work. I have been extremely careful not to break/snap anything, however I did loose one of the screws from the bottom, could that be it?
when i was removing the LCD i noticed that on the back the two black things that run down the sides were separating from the main LCD at the top. it doesn't look too bad, and its only a little apart, will this be a problem?
Great Video! I watched another one, but it went through the steps by saying the step and then cutting to it after the step was done. This one clarified much better, and now my ipod is fixed.
lol such calm and elegant music...perfect timing because my nano was just washed...i took off the top and bottom white pieces...and am now wondering if i should try to take out the inside components and dry them in rice...or just throw thing in there how it is.. please help! and if anyone knows if brown or white rice works better.... THANK YOU
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!! i used this tutorial to clean off a water spot that was inside on the screen and behind the glass! thank you for posting this!!! I NOW HAVE A CLEAN SCREEN!!
did u disassemble it (b4 it stopped working)? i just took my stepmom's apart cause it's battery is bad. i put it back together outside the case and the screen didn't turn on ( when i plugged it in cause it only works that way) but it was the ribbon lock wasn't pushed down all the way.
Hi last summer by mistake i went in the ocean and fergot my ipod in my pocket. I put it in rice but it seems that the click wheel doesnt work and the actual button part of the wheel wont work, like the buttons dont press, but the screen works. Should I de-assemble it and dry cleaning it?
hey i just took on apart te glue is all over from when it was made. u have to push down on the right sized screwdriver and the side screws are at a angle & one of mine was poorly put in the hole and had some frame stuck in it if u get them out to a point u can can wedge them out the rest. Ps. i used a (00x50 mm) Phillips. (little big but it worked fine)
my ipod nano got water damage. i dried it out completely and did not power it on until i was sure it was dry. it did not turn on so i put it on the charger. it powered up and the screen and scroll wheel work great while on the charger as soon as i remove it it shuts off. do you think its a battery issue? your help would be appreciated. thanks
my screen's screwed, got washed a while ago, works fine now, but the screen is almost completely white, is there any way to fix LCD damage or am I just going to have to get a new screen/tough it out the way it is now?
Question: I have an Ipod nano 5th generation, when my earphones are plugged into the jack, I hear the music through my earphones and through the ipod speakers. I've tried turning it off, and I even bought a new pair of earphones, but nothing seems to work. I want to be able to hear my music through my earphones, but I don't know what's wrong. I'm thinking that it could be the earphone plug/ jack on the ipod that's not working? Or is there anything I can do about it? Thanks!
yeah i have same gen of ipod and my buttons like the roller thing dont work i tried taking it apart and doing what you did an nothing if you could help me that would be great
@garry159 - Depends on how it broke. You could possibly get away by replacing the metal hold slide assembly, but most of the time the problem is with the logic board and requires a board replacement.
There appears to be a yellow film or plastic covering on the part just below the screen, where it attaches by ribbon. Because it is there, i can't take out the ribbon. Should I just take the plastic covering off?
i have a 4th gen ipod that ive had for two years. for some reason it wont turn on and it its fully charged. is there any way of fixing it? i didnt drop it or anything or got it wet. this just happened yesterday
@PowerbookMedic thanks im you know a bit about ipod im gettin an iphone in september, i heard rumors that apple are bring out new ones with fixed antenals in january, should i get one in september or wait until january?
@PowerbookMedic Yea. i kinda dropped it. I took the top part of the ipod and tried flipping the switch thing manually. It didn't work. Upside is that it didn't get stuck on the locked side when it broke xD
hello any help would be appreciated, my ipod seems to charge fine but yet when i unplug the charger from the ipod it shuts off and doesnt turn on, and when i replug the player into the charger it works again, im not sure whats the problem but it may be that i need to replace the battery, i would like your help on this

@PowerbookMedic Hi, I have an Ipod Nano 4th generation, it was working well until this morning, the battery run out and it doesn't turn on anymore, I think the battery is not working, I have another Ipod Nano (of my cousin) and I want to know if I can change the batteries, thank you so much if you can help me
Hi There, you really seem to know your stuff. I have a problem with my iPod nano 4G. I've been using it in a logitech dockingstation for 2 year or so. My iPod has worked perfectly untill last night. when I woke up, the wheel nor the buttons worked. It has been playing unstopable until it went low battery. Whenever I charge it the power turns on, but my wheel/buttons still wont work. any suggestions?
Hi. i still have my ipod nano 2nd generation. It still works only when the screen comes on, its just white with a couple of lines across the screen. everything else is fine though, can you help please.
Great video, very informative!! I have a question though - is the headphone jack soldered in place, or does it clip in to the main board? I need to replace the headphone jack on my 4th gen Nano, and couldn't tell from the video how it is attached. Hope to hear from you soon!
Hi my ipod went through the wash and i put it in rice and it turns on but the touch screen doesnt work. (got the newest ipod nano too) anything i can go about it?
After dropping my iPod from about table height onto a hardwood floor, it no longer works unless it's plugged in and completely stationary. Any movement whatsoever and it was turn off/reset and if it's not plugged in, the click wheel won't respond. Would opening it up lead to a simple fix or not? I could buy a new one but I've invested way too much time getting all the songs/albums/artwork/etc just the way I like it.
@heisthejimmy ...thanks for the reply. i just figured out you have to put the glass back in before you slide the lcd all the way back in so you have room for the glass to go into the case and if you push the lcd down into the body first the glass will not fit in. thanks again
sir i need some help. i dropped my ipod nano 4th gen and it is stuck on the apple logo. ive tried restoring but it just restarts back to the apple logo. can you suggest anything?
@heisthejimmy How did you get the glass back in? lol seems to be the hardest part. It all comes apart simple and I esoldered new batteries in but for ther life of me I can not get the glass back in the 4th gen nanos? The little extended bits on top and bottom dont allow it to pop back in its one end or the other goes in then its like an 1/8 to much to fit back into the opening??
Recently my ipod hasnt been showing anything on the screen, but if i try to press a button, you can hear the clicking sound. Also, when i try to restart it, it beeps twice, but i still cant see anything, an apple symbol or nothing. Any suggestions?
im hoping u can help me i have no trouble formatting my flashdrive on my mac but when i plug it in my pc i get a message that says " flashdrive needs to be formatted" why is this happening help me plz... oh and when formatting i make sure its in the right format to be read on pc..
i hav the same exact ipod i tried to restart it but it wont turn on but wen i put it on the charger it is frozen nd the apple will show. can nyone help?

You don't "simply" remove the glass mate
Yep I broke the screen during process. It's hard to pull off. Now it's ruined even more. I finally trow away the ipod wasted time and money.
This was sure the best ipod ever made! Such a shame parts are gone 😢
Andrew van Leeuwen I think this is second buy the design is awesome. I think ipod classic 6th gen is the best
I think the best iPod was iPod mini 2nd gen
I have a question. When replacing the battery, do you need a soildering gun to put it back on there?
Great Video! I watched another one, but it went through the steps by saying the step and then cutting to it after the step was done. This one clarified much better, and now my ipod is fixed.

This video should be entitled How to destroy your ipod. Your average person will end up with at least a broken LCD...guarenteed.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!! i used this tutorial to clean off a water spot that was inside on the screen and behind the glass! thank you for posting this!!!
I NOW HAVE A CLEAN SCREEN!!
@oiutn - Have you tried resetting it? Hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears
@DailyBread2007 - You'll likely need to replace the logic board to fix the issue.
well i screwed that up....
i know this an old vid, but i need to change the battery on mines for the first time. thanks for all the info and details
PAMAROSHOUSE Happy to help!
Can you post a video on how to replace the click wheel in and ipod nano 4g
will top and bottom cover and glass panel will be fixed as before if we do it in reverse? or do we need to add some adhesive?
@superscenekitty - You're probably best off getting a new iPod as multiple components are likely damaged.
did u disassemble it (b4 it stopped working)? i just took my stepmom's apart cause it's battery is bad. i put it back together outside the case and the screen didn't turn on ( when i plugged it in cause it only works that way) but it was the ribbon lock wasn't pushed down all the way.
is there any other way to remove the plastic cover that protects the lcd screen? because i just wanna clean the inside since dirt in stuck in there.
@Pawn84 - You'll likely have to replace a hardware component, be that the clickwheel or the logic board.
Ok, I understand that. And one more question, Will I lose any songs movies or such, if I do replace my logic board?
I think I ruined my ipod even more now :/
Hi last summer by mistake i went in the ocean and fergot my ipod in my pocket. I put it in rice but it seems that the click wheel doesnt work and the actual button part of the wheel wont work, like the buttons dont press, but the screen works. Should I de-assemble it and dry cleaning it?
@Kuzimoto - That should be a strip of anti-static tape which should just lift off.
I have this I pod and woked beautifully, but now it started skiping song. What can I do about it. I love this player!?
hey i just took on apart te glue is all over from when it was made. u have to push down on the right sized screwdriver and the side screws are at a angle & one of mine was poorly put in the hole and had some frame stuck in it if u get them out to a point u can can wedge them out the rest. Ps. i used a (00x50 mm) Phillips. (little big but it worked fine)
The hold switch is soldered to the logic board as well as the headphone jack
@MrMissBones -You'll likely have to replace the logic board or the iPod.
my ipod nano got water damage. i dried it out completely and did not power it on until i was sure it was dry.
it did not turn on so i put it on the charger. it powered up and the screen and scroll wheel work great while on the charger as soon as i remove it it shuts off. do you think its a battery issue?
your help would be appreciated.
thanks
On a nano, usually water damage will get the logic board, and if that's the case you're better off replacing the unit.
my screen's screwed, got washed a while ago, works fine now, but the screen is almost completely white, is there any way to fix LCD damage or am I just going to have to get a new screen/tough it out the way it is now?
Can we swap its memory with some micro sd card or anything like we could on iPod classic ?
Hi,
Hey my click wheel does not respond. Do i need to disassemble all parts to change it?
or can i remove the click wheel and replace it ?
Question: I have an Ipod nano 5th generation, when my earphones are plugged into the jack, I hear the music through my earphones and through the ipod speakers. I've tried turning it off, and I even bought a new pair of earphones, but nothing seems to work. I want to be able to hear my music through my earphones, but I don't know what's wrong. Is it hard to take off the click wheel off an ipod nano 4th generation without breaking it?
Hello I took off the top and bottom covers, the problem now is that the screws are kinda glued there, what can I do to fix this?
Mine works fine, apart from no sound! Any Advice please?
@TheXLordsWay - You'll likely need to replace the logic board.
@PowerbookMedic Ah okay, i was wondering if it may be a fail safe. As for the glass casing, how on earth are you supposed to get them in/out?
yeah i have same gen of ipod and my buttons like the roller thing dont work i tried taking it apart and doing what you did an nothing if you could help me that would be great
@SaugaSkateMedia -You likely need to replace your LCD. They are available from our website.
I disassembled my iPod, will this work for fixing my wheel that won't work?
@garry159 - Depends on how it broke. You could possibly get away by replacing the metal hold slide assembly, but most of the time the problem is with the logic board and requires a board replacement.
I cant put the lcd back in, when i try to push it in the top, it pushes the logic board out of the bottom. have you got any ideas?
is there any way to remove the glass without taking apart the ipod? there is dirt on the inisde of my glass
@PowerbookMedic how do u fix the ipod if the wheel and buttons dont work???
There appears to be a yellow film or plastic covering on the part just below the screen, where it attaches by ribbon. Because it is there, i can't take out the ribbon. Should I just take the plastic covering off?
I've thorn a cable.. what should i do with it now?
@ChilliByteChannel - A missing screw won't cause an iPod not to work. The problem is likely a cable that is not properly connected.
i have a 4th gen ipod that ive had for two years. for some reason it wont turn on and it its fully charged. is there any way of fixing it? i didnt drop it or anything or got it wet. this just happened yesterday
push harder and add some force down to the clickwheel. ( had same problem but didn't need a wedge)
The glass won't come off..no matter how much i'm pushing on it I'm scared to break it. WHat should i do?
@PowerbookMedic thanks im you know a bit about ipod im gettin an iphone in september, i heard rumors that apple are bring out new ones with fixed antenals in january, should i get one in september or wait until january?
Hey guys. im having a problem finding the right screwdriver to unscrew these screws, is they any other thin material i can use as an alternative?
Cool! but uh.... how do i put it back together?
The people struggling with the glass, push down on the bottom and slide it down a little to the bottom. That's what worked for me.
God thank you mate even tho its been 10 years
@PowerbookMedic how do i replace the harware component? the buttons and the wheel are broken
hey just want to ask whether voice memo apps works with ipod nano 4th generation
@PowerbookMedic Yea. i kinda dropped it. I took the top part of the ipod and tried flipping the switch thing manually. It didn't work. Upside is that it didn't get stuck on the locked side when it broke xD

@alvisq - You likely need to replace the battery. They are available from our website.
How do you put the glass back ?

@jasminesscott - Yes, you'll likely just need to replace the LCD...possibly the logic board.
Please be advised: this is very hard to do, i completely destroyed my display in the process
i got super far but i accidentally ripped the clickwheel cable, didn't even notice :(
Hi There, you really seem to know your stuff. I have a problem with my iPod nano 4G. I've been using it in a logitech dockingstation for 2 year or so. @TheThingg2 - If the dock connector is hosed, you're likely better off replacing the iPod.
The physical button is separate from the flex assembly.
@liorrh - You'll have to replace the clickwheel to fix the issue.
Hi my ipod went through the wash and i put it in rice and it turns on but the touch screen doesnt work. (got the newest ipod nano too) anything i can go about it?
If it won't sync, you likely have an issue with your logic board and would need to replace that component.
After dropping my iPod from about table height onto a hardwood floor, it no longer works unless it's plugged in and completely stationary. Any movement whatsoever and it was turn off/reset and if it's not plugged in, the click wheel won't respond.
Would opening it up lead to a simple fix or not? I could buy a new one but I've invested way too much time getting all the songs/albums/artwork/etc just the way I like it.
is iit possible to put a new screen on the ipod?
@heisthejimmy ...thanks for the reply. i just figured out you have to put the glass back in before you slide the lcd all the way back in so you have room for the glass to go into the case and if you push the lcd down into the body first the glass will not fit in. thanks again
mine fell in the pool while i was playing music. is it permanetly damaged??
@MyTPIMonteSS - Yes, the headphone board is soldered in place.
What kind of glue do I use to glue the top bezel back on?
Small double sided tape is best instead of glue.
Is it something I can order?
SuperBar13 Yeah, we like the 3M brand for doing these.
sir i need some help. i dropped my ipod nano 4th gen and it is stuck on the apple logo. ive tried restoring but it just restarts back to the apple logo. can you suggest anything?
I Got The new Nano with the camera, and the hold switch goes on by itself. i need help to repair it. any advice?
@heisthejimmy

where can I get the clickwheel cable
@Chickeebird - You likely need to replace the clickwheel assembly
my ipod nano 4th gen also have problems the click wheel doesn't move...? how is that? can you help me? please?
Yes. The memory would not be affected by changing the headphone jack.
Oh my gosh! Where can I get a new click wheel. I pulled my logiboard out and didnt take off the locking mechanism!
Recently my ipod hasnt been showing anything on the screen, but if i try to press a button, you can hear the clicking sound. Also, when i try to restart it, it beeps twice, but i still cant see anything, an apple symbol or nothing. Any suggestions?
None of my ipod nano's buttons work but it plays music fine. What should I do?
im hoping u can help me i have no trouble formatting my flashdrive on my mac but when i plug it in my pc i get a message that says " flashdrive needs to be formatted" why is this happening help me plz...
